As we speak, there are hundreds of undumped games dying of bit rot and disc rot.

consider the following:

every day, far more than 24 hours of porn is produced a day. even if you were sitting in a room lined with TVs, you could not experience all the porn at once. we have long passed the porn singularity.

the same is true of video games, and practically any other media. Sure, there will be timeless classics, but it's healthy and normal to forget trash. it's also normal for people to have different experiences in different places, even if that means you'll miss out on the GOAT games you've never heard of.

>> No.4835216

Prototype collecting is a form of autism IMO. Good riddance.

Nobody's gonna play them anyway. Oh look, they used different tiles for that one level, totally worth spending $5000 to buy it off some nerd's hands.

I'm don't really care about each and every undumped game out there.
But It makes me feel bad when I think bout all the unfinished BIG releases, especially for x86 machines. Some of them were dropped at the final stage or at least a working prototype/demo (like, judging by rumors, Rave racer or early builds of DNF).

Planet resources are already thin with us

You turn a 3rd world country into one like ours and get them out of a rut, and then they begin to eat at our resources

We need less people on this planet, not more

The library buys everything they own, and are free to distribute them however they want essentially. As long as a copy isn't reproduced in any way then it should circumvent copyright.

>>4836186
Single party "preservationists" are cancer. We need software crackers and pirates themselves to distribute shit.

>>4836194
Well, you can take up manual scanning. Those are in far more dire need of preservation as a lot of scans of obscure-ish games are covered in watermarks or in a super low quality. I'm gathering some of my manuals to go and scan them later tonight.

It's a very minor problem. It most effects CDs and laserdiscs made in the 80s. When it comes to games, just the act of keeping them in the case with the paper manual - to help absorb moisture & contaminants - will ensure they'll last for decades to come.

I would really love if the prototype of bandersnatch for the speccy got leaked. it was a really promising game, and was cancelled only due to corporate bullshit (the collapse of imagine).

it was ultimately acquired by psygnosis and released for the atari st under the name "brataccas", but it was obviously not the same game at this point.
