Are Breath of Fire 3 or 4 worth it? Have beaten 1 and 2 which were disappointing. 1 felt like an antiquated NES JRPG with a minimal amount of SNES polish, and 2 felt like a mediocre run-of-the-mill JRPG essentially doing things that were done better in Dragon Quest, Lunar, and even Lufia.

Well, are 3 and 4 still worth a shot?

>> No.4828568

Yes, 3 is incredible and 4 is very good. Solid games. Personally I prefer 3 but I can see why others prefer 4.

>> No.4828570

they're better

>> No.4828603

I felt that BOF3 and 4 were both good, but I couldn't get into the first two games. Might give them another shot, sometime.

I feel that BOF3 is the better of the two between 3 and 4, but that might be because I found the dragon gene system so fun to mess around with. In BOF3, you mix various dragon genes together to create customized or unique dragon forms, which I felt was a lot better than how BOF4 handled it, where you only have a small handful of dragon forms, and they all look the same.

BOF3 has a really bad translation, however, and that's one of my biggest complaints about it. BOF4, on the other hand, has some of the best sprite work I've seen on the PS1.

They're the best two of the whole series.

Breath of Fire IV is one of my favorite jrpgs ever made, only played it last year too. Breath of Fire III is great too but not on the level of IV.

>> No.4829136

BoF II is my favorite.

2 > 4 > 3 > 1

3 is the patrician's BoF.

They are better, but still far from amazing.

Try BoF V instead. One of the best RPGs of the sixth generation, alongside SMT3, Mother 3, etc.

God no. They're generic as fuck.

I don't care much for 1-3, but 4 is one of my favorite rpgs on the PS. It drags a bunch in the middle, but is well worth pushing through because the later parts and pay off are well worth it.

If you disliked 2, you probably aren't going to be very impressed with 3 or 4 either. I think both games are better than 2, but ultimately they follow the same formula and share the same strengths and flaws.

I do recommend playing 5, though.

At least it occasionally gets a thread here. I love the Wild Arms games but only two of them are retro, so it's almost never discussed here.

5 might not be retro, but it's still part of the series.

I understand that people who liked 1-4 might not like the radical departure. I liked those games too.

But by god is 5 good. If you can let go of your expectations regarding the series, it's easily the most fun you'll have with any of the games.

It as basically a roguelite, before anybody in the mainstream new what that was or really cared. If it was released in say, 2014 with updated graphics... it would widely be considered the glorious revival of a long dead series.

I actually hated 5 the first time I played it, but it gradually grew on me, and after the second run, I enjoyed it quite a bit. I didn't like it as much as 3 or 4, but it was good.

It used to be when I posted that image that people got salty that it implied 1 was better than 2. Now that's ignored and it's /v/ getting mad that I don't like their first RPG from when they were 8.

1 & 2 are ok, they're not great though.
I never played 3 a lot, never got the opportunity to get into it. But it was good, what I played.

I actually just decided to play through all the BoF games since I've never really played them and I remembered it had it's 25th anniversary a few months back
The first one is fun enough, pretty basic, but I've only just gotten Bleu and the game seems to have decided to actually have a plot now, introducing what I guess are the 'four generals' type bad guys serving under the Dark Dragons
Ox and Karn are my favorite party members so far, I imagine I'll like Karn even more once I get his fusion ability
BoF2 still has my favorite Ryu design but 1's is really growing on me. I just wish he wore pants.

I like RyuI's tattered cape, tattered capes always look cool.

RyuII is probably my least favorite honestly, just sort of plain. RyuIII looks the coolest and RyuIV also has a more plain look but I feel it works well in IV's setting.

So people are biting the wrong part of your bait? 5 is a weird game to be sure, but it's miles better than both 1 and 2.
