Brutal Doom has SOME popularity.
Game journos showed it off because they don't actually give a shit about Doom or Doom modding; they watched a video where someone played it and thought "Wow, vanilla Doom could never do that!", then attribute freelook, OpenGL, and jumping as features that Brutal Doom invented for Doom (these actually existing for as long as 20 years with some sourceports, the GZDoom port that Brutal uses having them all since the early 2000s).
Brutal Doom's largest demographic is generally 12 year olds who are amazed because it's a little like Colladoody but much more violent, plenty of them in their "Fuck You, dad!" phase.

>> No.4830120

>>4830102
There's plenty of others who like it though, and it has some novelty and appeal, but common criticisms in the community include:
>Brutal was much better back in version 19, and the mod has several years of bloat and feature creep, adding lots of often pretty unnecessary or redundant things, it's like Mark is out of ideas but is just spinning his wheels and trying to stay relevant with his fans, updates made it worse
>basically BD was 'finished' years ago and Mark should move on to a new project
>gameplay balance is all over the place, Mark likes to deflect this by saying people aren't skilled enough to play it, but beyond mook enemies like zombies, pinkies and imps being made a lot more dangerous (an idea I personally actually quite like), a lot of more dangerous enemies are made pathetically easy, the baron can pick up explosive barrels and throw them at you, but you can shoot the barrel in his hands and it explodes, a nifty idea, except it autokills him and destroys all challenge there is to him in this situation
>the cyberdemon is a boss monster, and while he wasn't ever used to make very challenging encounters in the original iD maps, in BD, you can kill him with just 7 rockets, worse, if you headshot him 3 times with the super shotgun, that autokills him, this is beyond pathetic

>> No.4830151

>>4830120
Then there's coding:
>the code for BD is a spaghetti nightmare for MONTHS, one line of code referenced "0.I", as in, Mark somehow mistakenly put down the capital letter i in place of the number 1, meaning when you tried to run that version, it wouldn't boot, because GZDoom didn't know what the fuck that shit was
>because a large chunk of BDs fanbase are 12 year olds who can't do anything on their own, despite GZDoom telling you exactly what line, in which file, has an error, and this would take just a minute to fix on your own with Slade, the programmer of GZDoom was bombarded with complaints that the sourceport was broken, to the point that he quickly put out an update that made the game read "0.I" as "0.1", so they would all just fuck off
>he told Mark this, and said that this would be a temporary measure, but for the next version, when this bypass was gone, and with a new version of BD, MARK STILL HAD NOT FIXED THIS

You also have his 12 year old fanbase, which is known to pester other modders and mapmakers with complaints that their mod doesn't work with BD (as if taking two mods which both replace everything can just be smashed together and will just automatically work), annoying people to the point that some people will put in code to detect Mark's code, triggering endlessly spawning invulnerable golden dancing tiny revenants which noclip, just to fuck with these stupid kids.
Mark is also a very self-centered, antisocial and shitty as a person, ripping off code and assets, not crediting people who actually HELPED him, having to basically be pressured into crediting people who's work he used.
After being so shit he got kicked out of forum after forum, he can no longer rely as much on people's help.
There's also Project Brutality, a mod built off of Brutal Doom, in many ways being much better, but after their devs copied some code he put in a closed beta of a new BD version, he declared them his mortal enemies, apparently it's only ok when he does it.

Some tank simulator from one of those 50+ demo CDs.
It must have been released between 1998 and 2002. All I remember is driving around in a german tank, and when reloading the gunner would report "kanone bereit".
I'm pretty sureit isn't Panzer Elite, as I haven't heard that line yet in the game.

No idea. I'm tempted to say the original, but that's just based on the fact that that one seems to have been the most popular and therefore the most likely to have been used for recording video from.

But really it could be any of them.

Yeah, I did. I would usually beg my dad every friday night when he came home from work to take me to blockbuster as a reward for doing well in school. I probably rented banjo tooie enough times to pay for the game itself. I would always rent two games so I think I played foreskin64 maybe once and never again because I didn't like descent-type games at the time and something like banjo-tooie was more interesting to me.

Someone probably could make an ENB filter for it. The program I used needs to reconstruct object motion from the video to keep the image stable, and that would be a lot easier if it had access to a depth map. The Chen-Schmidt style swap technique is fast enough. Only problem is lack of interest. Style transfer is an arcane field, and many potential improvements (like https://users.cs.cf.ac.uk/Yukun.Lai/papers/depth_style_transfer.pdf)) are languishing because the source code wasn't released.

Sorry about sperging out, I just love generative art.

>> No.4865030

Sperge away. I don't understand the image processing stuff but lack of open source in research pisses me off too. How are people supposed to move fields of research forward if they can't even reproduce the results, that's bad science. Any public-funded research (like govt universities) should be open source, and all that paid access to papers that Aaron Swartz was against is evil shit too.

Now I am the one who has sperged. Back to /vr/.
