Most of the pc games I have in my Steam library are probably pre-2005. Mostly because my computer is shit and would probably explode if I tried to run a current gen game on it.

I have a PS4 and still use it, but I think the most recent game I bought for it was DS3. I used to get really excited for the release of videogames, and want to try them as soon as possible, but games are expensive as shit now, and I'd rather wait for a few months and see what kind of reception they get before picking up a used copy of something, rather than spend top price for potential disappointment.

Shit thread, I'm gonna hijack it to talk about GoG.

They've gone downhill from what I remember of them. Used to be you could buy some pre-packaged game and it would run on anything from XP forward. Now half the retro games I get from there don't run properly on any OS, require third party fixes if it runs, or suffer from graphical, audio, or control glitches. They are hiding behind the 30-day money back promise, but honestly how many people are going to have time to test all the games they buy in a sale just to make sure the games actually function? If you go looking through their forums, you'll find MANY games that don't work right and GoG ignore complaints about.

So if you were planning on spending money on their summer sale, just pirate instead. You'll be getting the same product AND the same level of customer support.

I wonder if whatever the equivalent of GoG is in twenty years will just run Windows 98 in a VM to play these old games.

Not to sound like a GoG shill, but trying to patch every game in your catalogue with every successive OS that comes out sounds like a pretty tall order. Shipping something that runs through DOSBox is easy, you just figure out whatever config for DOSBox works the best for the game, and let DOSBox worry about working right with every version of Windows.

If there's old libraries or OS hooks or whatever that had equivalents in Windows 7 but not in Windows 10, I imagine GoG can only do so much at some point, beyond having everything in a pre-built VM, which complicates things since they would need permission to redistribute Windows 98 or whatever.

I'm not saying they shouldn't do what they can so people aren't paying for games they aren't play. At the very least games with large numbers of compatibility reports should have a warning on the webpage, troubleshooting guides, etc. But it does sound like a difficult problem from the technical side, rather than just sheer laziness.

>> No.4822813

>>4822810
Forgot to add -- it seems like it's mostly post-DOS, late 90s to early 2000s games that people seem to have a lot of compatibility issues with, which makes me think of the theory about deprecated libraries or whatever.

Price is part of the reason for me but I also prefer retro games over modern games in many cases. Why should I pay 60 bucks for a new Pokemon game when the old ones, which I've already bought and own, look nicer and probably even have more content and a better battle system?

Why should I pay money for a game like Ni No Kuni: Revenant Kingdom when it's apparently just a series of fetch quests? I already own tons of amazing JRPGs that don't force me to kill 10 groups of 10 enemies just to advance the plot.

I mean, I get that people might enjoy new games. Times change, and the 'smartphone generation' prefers things to be easy and packaged in short bursts. And I do like some modern games - the 3DS is my favorite handheld console. But from what I've seen I don't see the need to spend money on a Switch or PS4.

I'm by your side OP. I don't complain too much since there are a lot of great and underappreciated retro games, but for time to time I wish I could play that modern videogame .

The worse of all is that there are almost no good debates around old videogames: There are no secrets anymore, all the information you could possibly need is inside a FAQ, no one shares excitement for replaying the games. If you stick enough time around here, you will figure out that threads revolve around suggestions and nostalgia (let alone collecting), which I don't since I never played those games when I was a child.

Now contrast it to threads about new games: everything is new, you can share your impressions on the game, you might actually discover something new that has not been reported in a wiki yet, and new games have a small chance to actually innovate.

I play retro games because new games are often too difficult for me.

There's always a big learning curve with all the buttons and then there are the game mechanics.

Do you want a TCRF General, then? I mean, I added the regional differences on there for Mega Man II GB like 2 years ago before I got immediately sick of how cancerous wikis are. All I did was just fire up all the versions next to each other in an emu and played through them all simultaneously, stopping at every new screen.

I didn't find this, but the hidden message in this one is a masterpiece:
https://tcrf.net/Hisou_Kihei_X_Serd

There's a glitch in Blaster Master that's not listed anywhere currently. If you exit the tank and jump to your death on top of the tank, after you bounce, you have a 1 frame window to land next to the tank, enter it and be fully healed.

Is there a vid somewhere that showcases that you can kill the first encounter of Elec Man in Mega Man NES by entering the room facing him, not moving and firing timed, Buster-only shots in which you can kill him without taking damage or moving?

I know this feeling. All of my friends tell me about the fun they have on Xbox One, and I wish I could join them, but the Xbox One X even when it was discounted to $410 is still way too expensive for me. Graphics cards and RAM prices are so out of hand that it is just better for me to build a "time machine" computer when it's the only affordable option. I am happy with the games I kept from back then, I still enjoy them a lot, but it is embarrassing to mention I play all the old games around co-workers. I was glad the government gave a rebate back in 2008 for purchasing a digital television converter box, as that's how I get my broadcast TV on my CRT screen, but it's not like any friends would want to visit to watch the NBA finals on a SDTV. I however, do get to visit my friends, but don't even have a modern enough phone to send stuff to their TVs to watch or games to play. The Switch is pretty cool, but it costs so much, and the damn Wii-U never dropped in price despite "failing" which is frustrating since I waited for a price drop that never came. I am starting to see "Windows 7 in 2018" and "is Windows 7 still relevant" overloading my feed for YouTube and sadly, Windows 7 is my daily drive on my old PC, yet I am starting to see websites not support the old browsers available to me. Again, I still loe the games, but it just sucks being left behind because my earnings does not allow me to keep up.

Yeah some of the games I downloaded a year ago work, but the last few games are just totally broken. I even got a refund on one (in GOG credit, of course), downloaded two cheaper games, and neither of them work.

The fact that they mostly ignore complaints if they are out of options is another slap in the face, so I'm done with them.

I thought that too many years ago and then I got myself a ps2. I had fun with it, yeah, but it was when I realized these games where you get to be cameraman aren't for me. IMO, if you can't be bothered to troubleshoot games yourself, stick to consoles. Games WILL break over time, you can't "just fix it for modern computers" because soon modern computers will be old computers.

eh, I used to know that feel, but when I examined my tastes and discovered the ends of what I find aesthetically pleasing in vidya, it really boils down to the fact that classic games indeed do have a certain character to them that modern devs cannot recapture on account of technology and the proliferation of plot or ((())) considerations over raw use of limited hardware.

classic games play like vodka. they are the distilled essence of what a particular piece of hardware is capable of.

modern games play like soda. they aren't even alcohol. they're subsidized corn syrup mixed with fuzzy water.

It's less the cost, but the fact that I'm simply unable to keep up with all the videogames. Hell, I've been living as a NEET for the past two years, and I still don't dedicate that much time for vidya. It's an enjoyable hobby, but just one of my hobbies, and my reading/watching list is just as endless as my playing list. I feel like some people spare every spare minute on vidya and have seemingly done everything. I can't really do shit like that anymore, more than 2-3 hours a day just makes me bored.
The newest console I own is NDS, and I've barely scratched the surface of its library in the last 2 yeaes, so I don't see myself ever "catching up" with current gen releases.

Yes, both are piracy but that's not the point. In one case, the copyright infringement could actually harm both developers and publishers for new games. However with most /vr/ related games (especially those that didn't get re-released on digital services or compilations) the vast majority of people who worked on those games back then already got their compensation and none of them will individually sue you if you download some ROMs or ISOs. If anything, some developers even stated they don't care if you got them legally or not (like what Romero wrote about Doom and Wolfenstein 3D). Sure, from a technical point of view the copyright on it is still active but unless you're an attorney for a publisher that is still in the game like Nintendo and if you risk a C&D because you hosted a rom/iso domain, chances are very, very unlikely you'll get sued for them.

There's more to law than the written law itself, you know.

So many cool games due out for Xbox they showed off. I will try to make the effort to visit my friends to play them, but I am just sad that I cannot just take the time to truly invest into them. I could only stay over and take over their TV/game system only for so long.

>>4825858
I just watched that Microsoft conference and saw a lot of games I am interested in. I fear, that the big fat Xbox would no longer suffice, especially even at its current selling price of just over $200USD, which is a lot of money. I have been hoping there was some "fell off a truck" price of Xbox One X on my local craigslist, but they all go for $500+. I know it is a large up-front investment for a bargain with game pass down the line, but scratching together 500 burger bux is very difficult. Admittedly I also kinda want the X because it has a flat top with no intake/exhaust fan to cover up when I stack something above it. I guess it is not only playing with friends, but all those games too.

>>4825867
I don't have facebook. I was considering my local pawn shop for a HDTV. I have been hearing good things about those Chinese TCL TVs lately but $280 for the cheapest model on amazon will take a bit to earn. Though that is an amazing find at $20, I lack the vehicle and muscle to transport the cheap TVs available in my area. At this point perhaps a good TV is not high on my priorities.

>>4831335
I have mentioned that those everdrives I have are Chinese knockoffs which are a fraction of the price of the real thing, but come with issues related to Chinese bootleg manufacture. My phone is an old phone which had way too much use its power button is starting to get difficult to use. It emulates SNES and Genesis okay, but it really struggles to browse the internet. I have been looking on aliexpress for replacement parts to fix it but I have to find the tiny star shaped screw bit to open it up first. Things are not cheap here.
