What are your favorite pocky rockers? I love this genre and want to play more.

In particular, I really want a good game like this on a portable system, if one exists. Penta Dragon was unfortunately pretty boring, even with bosses that look like this.

Don't know what you're going to find that's portable, but Shock Troopers 1 and 2 should be up your alley

wtf is this shit, it's like something out of mainstream gaming journalism (Souls like!)
These games were out before and on the arcades. I hope you're aware.
I was going to say Out Zone but maybe the fact that it's arcade exclusive or that it lacks anime girls is too much of a turn off for you.
I haven't played it, but the closest thing you'll probably enjoy is Mamorukun Curse of whatever's it spelled.

Christ anon, I'm sorry for making a joke about making up a genre name. But for someone getting this defensive, did you realize that:
1) the game I posted is not pocky and rocky?
2) the game in op is an arcade game that predates the game you posted by 4 years?
3) out zone isn't even a multidirectional shooter? (It is awesome tho, love toaplan)

That said, I do really want to play mamorukun also, but don't have any means to atm.

For another lesser-known cool game on the gameboy, I absolutely adore Cosmo Tank. It's a really weird game and the ground sections are too slow, but it's a neat combination of multidirectional shooting, shmup segments, and 3D FIRST PERSON DUNGEON CRAWLING WITH FIRST PERSON SHOOTING RANDOM BATTLES. It's very flawed, but it's damn cool.

>>4821865
I really want to play this. I think it's kind of funny that all of the american reviews bashed it for being not as advanced as pocky and rocky 1/2, despite being the "third game." (It's actually a remake of kiki kaikai, the game that natsume eventually turned into pocky & rocky in the snes.)

>>4822103
Right? It's such a shame too, because parts of the game (boss fights) are so fun. It could have been great if the stages were capped at 3 minutes long, the powerups made sense, and there were less stupid status ailments.

I actually had no idea there was a snes sequel! Is it any better? Is it still a shooting game?

>>4822159
No worries anon. You like toaplan anyhow so you're cool with me.

Ah whoops, I forgot to reply to this one.

Normally I don't really like unnecessarily specific genre names (the term roguelike has been ruined), but there are so few games like this that it might actually be a good thing if a catchy name could bring it more attention. It's such a simple and fun genre that nobody makes for some reason.

The only legit Pocky and Rocky were /vr/ (taito and natsume's ones) and after that Taito whored the franchise to no-name developers for a quick buck.

Most of the good stuff is in the arcades, though it's actually been Operation C that got me into the genre.

not if you learn to play it isn't, learn to exploit the roll maneuver which gives you invincibility frames.

So that stuff I said about Pentadragon being boring? I take it back, this game is awesome.

I hated it at first because the powerups seemed useless, the levels were too big, and the enemies were such a pain to kill, but then I realized that the scoring system DOES NOT REWARD YOU POINTS for killing enemies or midbosses!

So it's an entirely a speedrunning game, which makes it way more interesting. For stage 2 (the huge shitty maze dungeon), you can just kite the midboss around the entire stage to avoid having to fight enemies, and if you avoid switching shot types, you can keep powering up whatever shot you have until it's ridiculously strong (the weird V spread shot is actually incredibly powerful when you can rapid fire 4 shots (8 bullets) at a time.

It is pretty long, but there's an autosave system in place to keep your unlocked stages. And since the only score is your record time for each stage, there's no pressure to 1cc an unreasonably long game.

And then the bosses are just awesome, and so far all have unique music.

If you can get past stage 2, Pentra Dragon is actually really fucking cool.

I can't find an actual soundtrack rip of the game, but some dude made midi versions of the tracks. Listen to this cool shit.

Jeez, I can't believe I forgot that this existed. I even own a copy, and just forgot about it.

So I decided to give it a shot, and man, this is one of the coolest fucking handheld games I've ever played period. Gothic horror shooting game with customizable weapons like machine guns, shot guns, and tentacles? And your best buddy is the grim reaper? AND it's a top-down free-roaming shooter?

Serious 10/10 here. Music is amazing too.

Anyone know a place to download NGPC music btw?
