Where the fuck do I buy a CRT monitor? Since Goodwill stopped stocking them, do I just have to watch craigslist like a hawk?

>> No.4820640

Basically. I bought a 21“ 1993 Hitachi earlier this year that was internally caged and will drop beautifully into the cabinet I'm covering to dedicated emulation but I really would prefer a Trinitron but I dunno how long I'll need to wait for one to turn up and I don't want to put my 20M2MDU in it either. This is how you get old lol.

>> No.4820675

Monitors are much harder to find than consumer TVs. I'm assuming more monitors were recycled since they arent as difficult to move as a TV. I have had success calling locally owned computer shops.

You have to get off your ass and actually look at brick and mortar stores like thrift stores and vendors malls.

My city and the surrounding areas have Facebook pages where locals buy, sell, and trade. If your town has those, maybe put out a request for one. Just prepare for people offering flat panels even though you specify CRT.

I know where there are a couple at my work that no one would ever know went missing. They're touch-screen too.

Some colleges/businesses will periodically auction off old equipment, you could try one of those. Do some googling for such events near your area.

Five to ten inch touchscreen CRTs used to be freaking EVERYWHERE but I expect most of them just burned in/out or were broken since they were made for the public to touch. It's a shame too since I'd love to build a mini arcade cabinet around one.

These are like 15'' ones. They came from the cafeterias when they upgraded to flat screen LCDs last year.

>>4820856
Ebay would be a last resort. Shipping something as heavy as a CRT would cost a ton, plus it would most likely be damaged in shipping due to improper packaging. Unless you can find someone selling new old stock, it's really not worth the risk.

I'm pretty ignorant on CRTs. I thought for retrogaming, CRT monitors weren't very sought after, that everyone just wants PVMs, right? Is a CRT monitor better than a regular CRT television?

>I'm pretty ignorant on CRTs. I thought for retrogaming, CRT monitors weren't very sought after, that everyone just wants PVMs, right?

No. I've been into retro gaming for over ten years and have never even heard of the term PVM before. Not sure if someone was trolling you there. CRTs are in high demand both for retrogaming and because of zero input lag.

>Is a CRT monitor better than a regular CRT television?

It depends what you mean by "better". Both do what they're designed for pretty well and were competitively priced in a strong market. There's a theory that old games will look better on a VGA monitor. However then you have adaptor obstacles, you're probably better off just getting a good CRT tv.

People want them for retro PC gaming and for emulation. When they start picking up in value too more of them will come out of the woodwork

>>4822347
PVM (and BVM) is Sony's line of production monitors. They're well loved because they are similar enough in application to a TV they don't instantly push people out of their comfort zone and they also have wide compatibility - being a particularly notable/obtainable display in the US supporting RGB in addition to other more standard American formats. They've become quite a meme though and sell for much more than it's worth just to learn how to properly convert 15khz RGB into other more US standard formats.

They are pretty neat though I've picked up a few of them cheap.

Got lucky at Disney's cast market, bought a monitor for .25 cents, still checking often for the holy grail pvm

Serious question.
What are the chances to find a trinitron computer display form around 98-99 with good picture quality (proper black, color balance, no image artifacts)?

>> No.4823198

I got lucky because some dude died with a CRT collection and his wife didn't touch them for like 15 years. I picked up 2 ViewSonics and a commodore 1084 all like new with the packaging included. So just hope someone on /vr/ dies and you get his stuff

Probably because (judging by feedback form various forums) picture and build quality.

It's just the default choice for people who can't be bothered to do any proper research.

I'd take a Diamondtron-tubed Lacie Electron Blue over a Trinitron any old day of the week.

Aperture grille CRTs have square pixels is the basic answer. See this pic of my current dedicated emulation PC's monitor, a Hitachi. It looks good and all, but upon close examination the "computery" looking tri-dot pixels are visible. A -tron would be more desirable.

>> No.4824329

The human eye has a resolution of 576 megapixels, Anon. That's why we take macro pics of monitors to demonstrate their true appearance online. My eyes are aging, I use glasses to do precision work but I can clearly see the texture of the screen from normal play distance. You may be able to ignore it which is fine, you may even be perfectly satisfied with LCD which is fine for you but many people would prefer aperture grille. I'm still installing the Hitachi since I found one that's internally caged and the correct dimensions but if I come across a -tron that is as well, I may still swap.
