If this is your first time I'd suggest playing Vanilla with one or two classes first so you can have some actual D2 in your veins and then try modding it.

Sounds like an Amazon is right up your alley, they can specialize in bows or javelins and spears. Bow builds have a couple different skill options to pick from and are just generally fun altogether. Javelin builds can do some really insane damage output even without the best gear. Once you start gearing one up they become the fastest boss killers in the game.

At first I had a lot of fun with Necro but then I noticed it was because I wasn't having so much problems playing him because literally the skeletons did all the work. All I had to do was summon a pair, move and watch them kill all. Effective but boring.

I started a new file playing Assassin because I want to be actively involved and have a balance between clicking and killing enemies individually and spamming AoE shit to watch large groups die.

Necro is fun but as fishymancer at higher difficulties with higher player x setting, skeletons basicaly only serve as meat shield, merc have to kill stuff and when he do you chain Corpse explosion and wreck everything around, its beatiful also you have to use diffrent curses on diffrent enemies especially if you play HC, decrep on bosses and problematic shooters (or dim vision to render them useless), Amplify on everything else, teleport around with staff on switch or other part of gear to reposition army.

It's my first time playing D2, and I just got to Act 2. Everything was going fine for the most part until I step foot out of the hub here. I near immediately get raped by the mobs in the desert. Have I fucked up? I have 5 wolves, 2 ravens's, oak sage, and the HP regen vine. My stats are spread out pretty evenly between Strength, Dexterity, and Vitality. I'm Level 17 if I remember correctly.

Also, I can't seem to log in to the BNet servers, but that might be due to my landlord's router which I cant do anything about.

Other classes have skill-trees that complement each other, druids have skills that can't be combined due to completely arbitrary restrictions and grotesquely long casting delays, causing any possible customization and uniqueness the class could have had to dwindle down to fuck all, along with the pool of viable builds, so every druid build is just a shittier version of some other classes' build. I stand by my words, the Druid is objectively a terribly designed class by the metric of other D2 classes.

I was just reading the Diablo 2 postmortem and one of the things they lamented were the "poor" graphics.
But it feels like one of those cases where the lo-fi nature actually helped the atmosphere immensely. To this day I still think D2 looks significantly better than any game in the genre, including D3.

Brand new diablo player here. I’ve only briefly played D2 in my younger years and now I want to go back and do a deep dive into it with friends, and I have a few questions.

Is the minionmancer build completely sedentary in gameplay? Like, do the minions really do almost everything and I sit back and jerk off? Or am I simplifying it and there is a lot more to be done?

The same goes for a sorceress build. Do I only sit back and blast away or is there more to it?

Managing curses is pretty important as a zookeeper. You have to keep up with switching between amplify damage, slow, or weaken depending on what enemies you are facing. On Normal difficulty though, you should just be able to jump into the fray and wail on things with your skeletons.

Its alot of damage and you can leave monsters to suffer the full extent of it... but there's alot of abilities that either cut the total amount by alot or provide resistance.
Poison Damage delivered overlaps, it doesn't stack. Im not sure if different rates or lengths of it even stack. The highest rate of damage afflicted is whats applied, it lasts for the indicated number of seconds. If you or the monster gets hit for poison damage and the duration wasnt finished, it gets reset thats all.

But we know thats not the way it really works in combat, and monsters also heal. So those poison damage numbers have to be high for it to deliver anything near on par with what normal weapons can do.

Druid and Assassin are perhaps the easiest classes to play, all the way through Hell. For Druid, you start with Fissure, later respec to Tornado+Hurricane. All of those deal huge amounts of damage. The Bear will tank for you. For Assassin, start with fire trap, then respec to lightning traps. Again, huge amounts of damage, a wand with Lower Resist and a staff with Teleport will help get around lightning immunes. Mind Blast will help to not get overrun in tight spaces.

Dis is me. I'm part way through Act 2 with my Paladin after trashing my druid. I want to use vengeance as my primary attack and conviction as my aura, which I understand to be an "Avenger Paladin". I'm still not sure how I'm supposed to know how to acquire the specific gear mentioned on the wiki's. They all list recommended items like Guillame's Face, but don't say where you find it. Auras from runewords always stacked. The buggy thing about auras is that only one aura of a specific type can be active at the same time, and this includes enemies. If an enemy has a higher (or equal?) conviction aura then you or your merc, the conviction aura from you/your merc will not take effect.

Pic shows failed items. If you have ever wondered why a you kill an act boss for an active quest drop, which yields only rares, sets, and uniques, and a bunch of blues appear, these were spawned as set items and failed for the reason, like in this case, that there is no set item of this type (rune sword).

Second down is a failed unique, which tends to happen more often in d2classic because there are no exceptional-grade uniques.

A set item fails down to magic, but you can tell, because it gets double durability— 44*2=88 as pictured
A unique fails down to rare quality and gets triple durability— 68*3=204

Ah, the stacking glitch. Yeah before the fix you would spam reequip the second item on the merc to continually stack the aura. There was a player version where you put the aura item in the trade window and caused the trade to fail when you both accept (full inventory, torch/etc trade). I think that one was fixed as well, never tested though.

The whole copying linear ilvl progression over from WoW didn't help at all either. There's too much "balance", both in regards to items and skills. Several years ago, maybe 5 years ago maybe 7 years ago, I was having dinner with my brother and my father. We all played diablo 2 back in the day, one of my sisters did too. Played it on lan together sometimes too.
We started talking about it and dad told us that he had it running upstairs because he had trouble with Duriel, which he often did. He had been trying for a while, but kept dying. I don't think he had a lot of vitality on his scrawny necromancer.
After dinner my brother and I decided to help him.
There were so many necromancer corpses down there, since each time my dad died, he had grabbed new gear, even bought new gear trying again.
So I was up, my older brother watching. Went down and portaled, grabbed a corpse and went up, and kept doing that, sorting out all items, figuring out which set was his real or his best times and using those. After that I went down to kill Duriel for him, I think his necro would die in 3 hits, so I quickly got back up when I started taking hits. Many a TP scrolls later Duriel was dead and I avoided dying a single time.
We got to Kurast and my dad was very pleased, and he said he had gotten a lot of new characters up to that point and then started a new character.
So my brother and I switched and started going through all his characters that were parked at the end of Act 2 and killing Duriel for him. Brother killed Duriel with his Barbarian, then I killed him with his Amazon, and so on.
Weeks later I saw him playing, and he was in Act 3, but with a new character. I was pleased to see that he had killed Duriel on his own, he just needed to see us do it again to manage it.

I don't play that much D2, but I do play it at least once every year just to kill Duriel with a new char, either on my dads birthday or on his deathday.
Most recently I did it with a Fireball Sorceress. Felt a bit slow while just leveling firebolt, but the speed picked up fast as soon as I got access to fireball.

Pic is a baal grand charm. People save Baal (99), Nihlathak (95) gcs for rolling the pvp-grade combo, +skill tree +45 life. The issue is that the "upper tier" of the Vita suffix, which are those with magnitude 41 or greater, is a level 91 mod.

For those of us who don't necessarily give a shit about +45 life, the pic second-below is probably more interesting. The optimal charm to reroll for +skills appears in a3 nightmare, anywhere AFTER the Spider Forest. The skill trees are lvl 50 prefixes. When rolling a charm it is said that you get the best odds for +skills if you prevent the appearance of higher-level garbage like Serrated.

From a cost-benefit standpoint, save-scumming the 3 pgem rerolls is better than microwaving grilled cheese but inferior to french kissing your sister.

People do not want to read a lot of tiresome technical bullshit about something they are not doing. Rivalrous DLL injections, like PlugY which modifies the inventory and rules, are not compatible either.

I'm kind of addicted to running parties, so I left the realms when 1.14 came out and do all this in single. I've used Etal (D2NT core) and Kolbot (D2BS core) and I find that kolton's bot has a superior pathfinding system for walking characters and is generally better with line of sight and collision stuff. Whereas Etal was better for stable, enigma-powered mfing on the realm without getting rd.

The bot loader takes care of the multi window thing. You don't need a cd key to run a client in single player or tcp/ip. I don't know anything about version switchers. I use 1.13d, got it here after installing d2 fresh:

There's splash damage jewels in PoD, which you should be using, most popular build is blades of ice, you either make a chaos rw or use a 3os fleshripper for ubers. Bugdet option would be Nat's set which I can give you as well. There's a full guide on their wiki which you should read, even though it's not that good because the weaboo that makes the guides hasn't updated it yet. Overall the changes they made only make the class stronger, but the mod has other issues with nerfs and uber buffs, and overall being reddit of course, which is cancer.

Normal cows are a bit too low level to drop good stuff, I think. For my Barb to transition to Nightmare, I farmed Baal and Nightmare Hole and Pit. Found the Hexfire on my previous one and the Bloodletter on the current. Still looking for a base for a Strength runeword though.

I only have vague memories of trying to find an item with enough sockets for a runeword (e.g. spirit) and thinking that a white item will do because I could get four sockets from Larzuk, but if it dropped with sockets, it would be 3 at most (before A5 normal or whenever).

This could be worth talking about because I made a post earlier about quest drops.

The andy quest bug is where andariel ALWAYS does a quest drop. The bug is active on most characters. From what people have been able to tell, the only requirement for activating the bug is to 1) kill andariel or be partied to complete the quest as normal, and then 2) talk to warriv to go east in the same game.

Thereafter, you always get andariel's quest drop and it is a permanent condition on the character. The only people who don't activate the bug are those who leave the game before heading east, or the game crashes etc.
