Yo can we get a final fantasy retro general going since the one on /vg/ is about phone games?

Rn I'm playing 7 the new threat mod. I'm at the golden saucer for the first time.

Could somebody please give me a tl;dr rundown on this series? Which of the games are actually worth playing? I can't be bothered doing the whole series since each game is like 50+ hours long.

They're all worth playing in their own way. If you wanna play the original or /vr/ versions without anything patched or modded than 2, 3 and 5 might be difficult for you if you can't speak japanese. 1, 4, 6, 7, 8 and 9 are released in english but the last three take a little longer to complete while the first game might be tough if you aren't used to older RPGs. 4 and 6 are still somewhat popular but your mileage on them might vary so I can't say if you like them if you don't wanna spend some time on them. 10 is alright but after that it's barely final fantasy anymore so if you want to "get into the series" you can skip them altogether.

Not that finding some translations and patching them on the original roms should be hard or anything. A lot of them have been re-released so you aren't even limited to rare and expensive copies.

New Threat is pretty good but be prepared for that huge difficulty jump in Disc 3.

Oh yeah, if you morph the ghost ship under Junon for the guidebook you can get a golden chocobo for free so chocobo raising is optional if your aim is the extra materia, but unlike the original game there's a boss guarding all of them and they're not easy.

1, 2, 3 should only be played to appreciate where the series came from.

4 - Fun story, very classic feel.
5 - Didn't like this one much.
6 (released as FF III on SNES) is worth playing, as is 7.
8 gets a lot of hate but it's interesting enough, worth a play through.
9 is a great RPG in general.

If we're including newer systems, 10 is probably the last I enjoyed.

11 was the online mmo, 12 drags on and feels pointless. The lightening games are visually interesting but lack substance.

VII is 3rd best after VII and VI, if for no other reason than the ability to eliminate random battles completely and level up by playing cards instead and only fighting boss battles. It's the comfiest way to play any FF game.

Okay, real reasons why VIII is good:

>vastly improved character models compared to VII
>excellent background art
>fantastic score
>ENC-Half and ENC-None
>epic card-based minigame actually provides gameplay benefits and isn't just there to kill time
>the dog's search function randomly rewarding you with awesome stuff
>quality final dungeon even detractors usually admit is good
>junctioning isn't any more game-breaking than grinding to stupid-high levels, just much less time consuming
>Fujin and Rajin, ya know?

The story might not click with everybody (I liked VII's better too), but it's still a quality game, wish people would stop acting like it's somehow not worth playing

>> No.4818253

>>4817606
>ENC-Half and ENC-None
I didn't even need these. The game is so easy thanks to junctioning being exploitable. Plus card modding and the spell that gives you instant limit breaks. I seriously don't understand where the frustration comes from with the battle system. I got the hang of it when I was like 12. It's way less sophisticated than materia.

The whole game never clicked with me at all. The setting is like a military high school, the characters are lame and the inversion of traditional RPG mechanics is the worst of all. I LIKE the Dragon Quest model of gameplay. Don't ruin it!

It isn't hard to grasp, but it actually IS more complex than materia, let's not lie.

But Final Fantasy has evolved it's gameplay with pretty much every title. While Dragon Quest has stayed the same. Not saying that's a bad thing, but don't thrust that obligation on a whole different series.

Both are good for different reasons. If you want the same experience as the SFC version of FF4 but with shiner graphics then PSP or you want to experience FF4 with more challenge and some room of customization than Steam.

I haven't played the PSP remake, but it looks decent to me.

The 3D remake on the DS is great, but it is a ground-up remake with completely different enemy balancing and substantial enhancements/modifications to the ability system. If you are already a fan of the original game, it's worth checking out. But if you're looking for an authentic experience play the original first.

The Steam version is a barely half-assed port with a garbage mobile UI. It sucks dog shit, avoid.
