Chikorita's second evolution form looks like the leftover of an even early scrapped starter that they left in by mistake.

Some of them are better than what we actually got. Some of them are worse.

I want to scoop up that baby Magmar and take it home.

I think a lot of them look bad but there are a few that I think could have been decent.

The prototype Noctowl looks pretty cool, and the baby Meowth and Vulpix designs are cute as fuck.

Honestly I'm more hype for the gen1 back sprites that are properly in R/B/G style. I hope someone hacks those back into gen1!

By and large, they seem to have made the right calls with most of these. There's some interesting stuff in here, but even the better designs look a little homely. Like, that thing that looks like Weepinbell wearing bell bottoms?

With that said, even the shitty things here blow anything from R/S and beyond out of the water.

Remoraid isn't obvious, but I always sort of thought that's what they were going for with Octillery. Maybe not a tank per se, but the "artillery" portmanteau was clear, like the mouth was supposed to be the cannon.

Makes sense if you've ever seen CGI shorts from the 80s and early 90s when they finally were able to make believable spheres.
The whole point of Porigon-2 was that it was upgraded to run on better hardware; hince why its more rounded and sleek compared to Porygon's vector graphics look.

They just toned it way the fuck down with the final Porygon-2.

The water and fire starter should have been kept. Totodile line could have been kept too but not as starters.
Proto noctowl is cool and sleak.
Anchor shark is my favorite.
The fire seal nexto miltank and the mushroom bug next to crobat looked good too.
The double headed ghost next to Crobat looks interesting.
Overall they had some interesting designs tht would have worked.

Someone should make a gen ii romhack with these.

Looking at the starters, I really prefer a water croc to a seel/lapras hybrid, and the fire one looks like pikachu on his first form, and like flareon on his last one, Cyndaquil is weird as fuck, but that's also kind of cool about it, he's unique.
Not saying I dislike the proto starters though, they're still cool.

That Water/Steel pokemon is the shark pokemon I always wanted as kill. It breaks my heart more now knowing they had one and cut it.

Sharpedo is okay but Water/Dark with sub 50 DEfs he gets beat too easily.
