Use this thread to discuss about models, accessories, modding, recommended games, etc.

I will start. I'm looking for an accessory to play with light with my gb color. I know a backlight mod or emulation are way better but I'm too stupid to mod something and I actually use my GBcolor outside so that's why I want a light for it.

Is Pic related worth picking up or there is a better light I can use? Where can I buy it considering I'm not burger?

Also, it's worth picking up rechargeable batteries for a GBcolor? I read some of you saying they harm the device. What kind of batteries I need to use? I picked up mine recently and I giving it use, so I think eventually I will need to change the batteries.

>> No.4787989

Worm Lights are actually surprisingly usable, you can get new Chinese ones on amazon now for like $5. Rechargeable batteries will be fine, and definitely won't hurt your GB; everyone seems to shill for eneloops but it shouldn't matter as long as they're 1.5V.

I'm waiting for one of the 'clear' japan-exclusive GBCs in the mail right now, looking really forward to it. It's a little yellowed, but I got it for ~$18 shipped so I'm happy. Planning to use it as a 'daily driver'.

Can't go wrong with low self discharge NiMH

Maybe consider a single lithium-ion and a shunt.

Those lights work well enough but are annoying to get positioned just right so they illuminate the screen without blocking it while also angling the Game Boy so the image reaches your eyes but not the glare. LEDs have gotten more efficient since then, so it may be better to have an independent unit that doesn't drain the battery if you can figure out a way to keep it in place. Avoid anything that takes expensive button cells. AA AAA or some kind of Li-ion is the way to go.

So what kind of light source you recommend exactly? Of course I'm not getting those huge magnify glasses with light who look like a bootleg transformer, maybe you can recommend me an specific accessory you use?

Yeah, this is the one I bought. This color is popular so they go for ~$30 and up when in better shape. I mostly wanted one to actually carry around in my bag, and I don't mind the discoloration. New screen lens and some rubbing alcohol / toothbrush cleaning should do the trick.

Haven't tried Li-ion AAs yet. Maybe I will when my NiMHs are flat. But I've read that chemistry self-destructs much faster even when not used at all.

The disposable lithium (not ion) batteries are about a third lighter and last a bit longer with slightly higher nominal voltage. They make my lightsabers noticeably brighter.

Mine seems to be funny on my original SP. I don't think the actual hardware switch goes bad, but rather the 'click' of the switch itself (which is just a plastic tab on the power switch that uses friction against the inside of the case to stay in place). All of the game boys use that same system for the power switches, but I wouldn't be surprised if the SP was built with cheaper switches, since my childhood system (treated as roughly as my other childhood game boys) is the only one that has problems with this. I have nothing but personal theories to back this up though.

>>4788184
For me, it's that the battery covers are more fragile on the translucent systems. I love my childhood atomic purple, but I have upgraded to the infinitely more childish yellow/blue Pokemon GBC.

I most recently got back into Game & Watch Gallery 2. I am way better at it now that I'm a more thoughtful player of games. Getting 1000+ on games is coming much more easily, and I'm optimistic about hitting the max 120 stars soon.

I feel kind of bad that I have so many GB, but I love the different models. My GB Light is my favorite, but the Color is best for color games for sure. The AGS-101 is great for literally anything, but then sometimes I also like the DMG. So I guess game boy is the one thing I can't help but collect many of.

Related, I think the non-backlit Game Boys are a great thing to play outside on a summer day. Get your games and your vitamin D in the warm air.

This was probably the best color for the GBC and I wish I had it. I hated the fact you needed that damn light. Playing with the adapter was great because it saved you having to waste batteries.

Nintendo handhelds for me were for the most part Pokemon machines but I also loved Wario Land 2 and 3. SML games and Links Awakening are also be great. For the most part I don't think a GB is worth owning in 2018 and you are much better off emulating this stuff. A lot of the games feel more limited than NES games. Most probably do in fact. Any great 3rd party game likely might have a better port elsewhere and the GB/GBC had a ton of shovelware or very forgettable games since it was a kids handheld. I suggest you stick to the 1st party Nintendo stuff and maybe certain other games is fine like Tetris.

Just found this. Display comparison of AGS-101 and the original frontlight SP on GBC/A games: https://imgur.com/a/lshT2#0

Holee fuck. I'm not a big fan of the 101 but even I didn't think it was this bad. Look at how Abe's Odyssey's aesthetic was completely butchered by the "too good" 101 display. TBF this technically falls on the devs for trying to compensate by oversaturating the colorspace, but the point stands - the 101 is overkill. God knows why people still pimp this ghosty, 5 hour battery life, can't-see-shit-outdoors Game Boy over the proper reflective models. It has to be benign ignorance.

Like the point of the whip in CV goes beyond just having a whip, felt like people just pasted the idea of old games into Symphony level design, and didn't entirely realize that level design was very integral to classic CV. I feel like that's going too far. I still enjoyed stuff like Advance Wars, Mario&Luigi, Mario Kart Super Circuit, the F-Zero games, WarioWare (Twisted being the best in the series), and even though I didn't care much for the remake games, I still had them and played Mario Bros. and Four Swords a lot. Also, Mario Advance was nice in that it added the egg hunt mode, that was my favorite add-on to SMB Deluxe so it was cool to have it again. It's basically to trick redditors into paying exponentially more for almost nothing, Krikzz runs a pretty shady business, but he has the market cornered so people let him get away with it. I would order from a dealer like stone age gamer or whatever as well, not from his website, he can take 3-4 months to ship.

Here's the rundown:

X3 - No SRAM battery, need to press a button in the cart (not as weird as it sounds) to force the SRAM to get dumped to the SD Card before powering down, else, you're data is nuked on power off.

X5 - Adds an SRAM battery so it can hold SRAM without having to push a button (literally that's the only difference)

X7 - It's an X5 with an RTC, also some kind of save state functionality. Keep in mind that all the games with RTC functionality have hacks to bypass it.

The firmware is exactly the same on all three, and the compatibility is the same too.

Bootleg is an unofficial copy sometime modified to fit the copy medium or to bypass anti-copy system / add functions.

NOOOOOOOO!
GOD NO, don't use scissors or wrench, you redditor!
here is how to proceed:
1) Plug your GB / be sure it has full battery
2) open the game case (like in the photo) and insert the half case with the PCB (circuit board)
3) turn on your GB, the game shall be playing
4) if your game is playing correctly, fire up your soldering iron and gently desolder the battery. You can use fine pillars to cut the top leg or a screwdriver to gently lift the battery leg from the battery.
5) Now you should have a game still running, but without battery (either with or without legs, depending on the new battery you bought). Prepare the new battery by tining it's legs (or its face if you use a legless battery).
6) Carefully place the battery at the right spot and weld it.
7) When done, check that the game is still running. If So, use a multimeter and check the battery voltage probing the PCB and not the battery itself. You should be able to ge the correct voltage.
8) If everything is okay, save your game, turn it off, and screw back your cartridge.
9)???
10) Profit

A) Battery HATES high temperature. Please, buy a legged battery if you can.
B) You are using a hot soldering iron in a live plastic 20 years old game boy. Need I to say to take care neither to short cut tracks nor to burn the case?
C) Have fun! If you can, practice on a dead cartridge, or a one you don't cherish that much before doing it on your beloved ones.

>>Mutter to self about how batteries lasted 20 years in your day
Hasn't battery capacity steadily improved over the years?

One AA battery made today lasts longer than an AA battery from 25 years ago.

I meant a DS flashcart like the guy he was talking to was asking about.

Yes, modern DS flashcarts work in 3DSs. I use an R4 SDHC 2014 or something and it's great. Near perfect GB/C emulation and DS games without having to have the 3DS.

I've thought about buying a normal AGS-001 but they go for around 60$ on Ebay I could always buy a "refurbished" brand new GBC for that price

No. A batterys capacity always decreases over time. kek
New batteries potentially have the potential to use new technology and have higher capacity but that doesn't mean that happens. One AA battery made today can last longer than one from 25 years ago. Another can last a fraction of that. This is particularly a problem when replacing high quality batteries used in original hardware with whatever random replacement parts you can find today.

Fuck I absolute love this cover. Too bad the actual game is very chibi-esque instead of a gloomy and nocturnal game about living in a farm.

It's not bad, but it's very bland. Assuming you can grab it, go for Nemesis instead.

I think maybe the cover artist might not even have seen the game, only being told it was a farming game, and it's called Harvest Moon.
>"Harvest Moon? Like, harvesting crops at night, in the moonlight, or something? Sure, I can do something like that."
>"Yeah, sure. There's dog there, too, put him on the cover as well."

It's a very pretty cover, at any rate.

I want to mod my gameboy color so it can have an illuminated screen. I never did a mod before but I can learn and I'm not stupid so I'm ok.

But my question is, should I do front light or a back light mod? Which one is better? What are the differences between then? Pros and con on them?

>> No.4816461

>>4816276
GBC Backlight mods are absolutely awful, the SP-101 screen mods are extremely difficult, and front light mods are OK if done very well, and nightmarishly bad if fucked up at all. I got a GB Boy Colour for the backlight, and use a regular GBC when the lighting is good. I've considered ordering a very well done frontlight mod.

Yes, there are many. Personally I usually make my own though.

any generic ebay shit would work? Do you have to find low profile ones or something? the carts don't seem like they have room.

I've heard people say they've done it to gba carts too but that seems like a fucking lie.

Batteries have peaked for a while now. short of a completely revolutionary breakthrough, there's really no way of having higher capacity batteries without just making them bigger.

Like it's just physically impossible to (safely) store more power in the same space. The only difference between batteries made now and batteries made 20 years ago are safety, reliability (when was the last time you actually had a battery leak?) and potentially being better at preventing self discharge.

Lots of clips won't fit but there are plenty that will. You might find them on ebay.
All you've seen is fools trying to stuff the wrong battery into a GBA cart. And you certainly won't find that clip on ebay or probably wherever else you buy stuff.
Bear in mind I never said the parts were easy to find on ebay. I just said there are lots of parts that will fit. All those companies don't make all those batteries without having a way to connect them to things.

The BennVenn GBC backlight mod literally entails removing the original screen and replacing it with an AGS-101 screen. The amount of effort it takes to modify the shell to accommodate both the new screen and the expensive ribbon cable needed to use it is kinda ridiculous. Especially with the difference in screen size, you may as well just be playing on an SP
The best frontlight option would have you cannibalizing an AGS-001 for its front light, and VERY CAREFULLY modifying that to fit onto the GBC LCD. For best results you'd also want to use a specific clear adhesive to help with light distribution, but you have to be really patient with that otherwise you'll fuck it up.
Here's a good tutorial for that https://imgur.com/a/WEM7f
If you've never done a mod before, the GBC is probably a terrible place to start.
