Why was it that the PS1 had such a ridiculously huge number of games that never made it to America? Were they too Japanese?

How do you cope?

>> No.4807410

Sony had a policy against 2D games. Only some 2D games were released in the west.
Shin Megami Tensei also wasn't popular at all outside of Japan.
It's weird to think the first ever Megaten-related game that got localized outside of Japan was a Jack Frost spinoff for the Virtual Boy.

There were a ton of 3D games that didn't make it either, though. It's strange.

Yeah, the series didn't really become popular until later on. People definitely weren't crowding around Persona 1 and Persona 2: EP when they were originally released. They were kind of niche at the time.

Innocent Sin wasn't released in English mostly because of a lack of resources (manpower, time, ect)—they were busy working on Eternal Punishment at the time, which was a lot more "friendly" to release to the West. IS would've been a butchered mess if we'd gotten it—even the eventual PSP version watered down the Nazis.

It's really a two-factor scale of how much appeal a game was expected to have relative to how much effort it would take to translate it. It's no surprise that many RPGs didn't make the cut.

This is why it really rubs me the wrong way when people bag on Vic Ireland and Working Designs when in fact they should probably be celebrated for significantly contributing to the culture of JRPGs in the West.

Games with heavy religious themes like Megaten though - whew. It's pretty surprising Persona and Last Bible actually got localized.

The same can be said about any console that had some success in Japan. Still, there's even more stuff in Ps1 because the gigantic catalog not rivaled until Ps2, also years of intensive experimentation in japanese industry that generated some of the weirdest shit ever.

I cope by learning Japanese, but to be honest I'm not that motivated to play those so-called hidden gems, because I'm convinced the majority of them won't be all they're cracked up to be.

Because it's a jap console. Nope, they just don't give a fuck about you. I cope by learning moon in the 80s.

>>4808560
There's quite a bit that's really worth playing that requires knowing moon. However there's even more that's worth playing that doesn't, or just a bit, but that you'll probably never hear about if you don't. Most of the "hidden gems" faggots recommend are weeb/hipster shit.

I wanted to play this, but the game just kind of hangs when I first meet the crow. It doesn't bother me much because the constantly auto-scrolling text and the chiller font make it pretty hard for me to read anyway, but a few years from now I'm gonna want to try it again.

There's bad, average and good obscure games. Since there's literally thousands of jap only titles you will probably find something that would fit your taste, but it's always better to have some specific motivation. I like to think about all those Metal Max games that will never get translated.
Also, sometimes the pleasure is in discovering things by yourself, who knows what stuff remains still untouched by the white man.

Vic Ireland is a part of the problem.
He caused a PR disaster for the sole Daisenryaku he released (something to do with nazis) and no one wanted to touch the franchise for years later, considered the third Lunar game uninteresting, ignored NEC basically begging him to do more PC Engine games.

The bagging on Vic Ireland you talk about includes ruining the NA releases of Vay, Exile and Silhouette Mirage (his changes CAUSED the bad ratings and the poor market performance) and adding his touch of censorship (religious themes) even when the console company is okay with it.
