>Try to keep it /vr/-related: Nothing past 5th gen(+ Dreamcast). Slight OT might be okay if related to CRTs (E.G. 16:9 compatible models, flatscreens, etc.) Systems with backwards compatibility are also pretty safe territory, assuming you're focusing on the older games. PC CRTs are also a-ok.
>Produce OC! Get out your real cameras and take beautiful pictures of your CRTs displaying recognizable characters with the kind of beautiful accuracy that brings tears to the eyes of young and old alike! If you take 100 photos, at least one of them will turn out alright! (maybe)
>Try to be as detailed as possible when asking info on a specific model. As always, google is your friend, and we are your friends with benefits. Older archived threads aren't a bad place to look either.
>Share appreciation for others choice of technology and personal philosophy of gaming. As always show courtesy in your discussion and moderate yourselves first.

Discussion of video processing and scaling devices is okay, but try to keep the focus on CRTs and CRT accessories

When is a newcomer ready to start working on CRTs? How much do they have to know? How safe can you be? I've absorbed plenty of knowledge regarding working inside of these things but I still feel like I'm not ready to calibrate mine even when I know what needs adjusted and have a general idea of what not to touch. Anyone else here have to teach themselves from a hodgepodge of internet resources? How did your first couple of experiences working inside of CRTs go and what are your methods for doing it safely? I'll have to adjust mine while the set is turned on.

Just make sure you are keeping your eyes on your hands. Use a mirror or another person. Good luck doing it any other way, there aren't really many people you would go about meeting in real life to learn from. You can't learn experience, just go for it. Someone just so happens to be making a channel dedicated to this. Check out some of these videos, he's most likely making more as we speak.

I can't get any picture through composite on my 1944Q. Works fine on my 8040's but no picture on my 1944Q. Didn't look that big and thought it was a 27" when I bought. Also weighs like a 27" meaning I can move it by my self which is surprising for a 32".

The "Picture" Setting was turned the entire way down making the screen black for everything but the menus. Turned that back up to max and everything looks perfect.

What's preferred for CRT Displays? Tube Television. Front Projectors. Rear Projection.

Since I actually have all three maybe I should do a comparison, but my Sony CRT Projector needs a new green tube. Has a dark spot right in the middle.

I can tell you that Light Guns do not work on my Sony 60" Rear Projection CRT. Never tried them on the Front when I had it set up. Those things take up the space of a recliner if you don't have it attached to the ceiling.

That has definitely been discussed, and something I'd like to actually poke a few of the people who have already done some work with that over on shmups on possibly contributing to; One big hurdle for it is simply the variety of different ICs and chassis out there that you could run into.

Finding the most common ICs, and even variations that the same info would apply to would probably be pretty high up on the list of things to do for that.
Still need to dip my toes in on doing one such mod myself, which I will do my best to document.

>>4809227
I agree completely; Something like that was what the Consumer Survey in the OP was supposed to do, but not only did it not really get much use but there's also no easy way for someone to properly access that info.

I've been sort of slacking on it, but been meaning to do almost exactly that with the US Sony models. Hardest part will likely be the photos, but much of the info can be had from the numerous manuals they still offer on their site. Just a matter of going through them and dropping the data into an excel doc or similar.

Well anons, I've finally lost my mind completely and went out and purchased a CRT projector. For $60 I felt like I could not pass up the opportunity as it is not likely to come again soon. It's a NEC Multisync XG-1352LC.

http://www.curtpalme.com/PJSpecs_NEC.shtm

I underestimated the scale of this thing. It is truly gigantic. Even photos with men to scale doesn't really get across what a goliath of a thing this is. And I plan on using it in my bedroom. I will just barely be able to make the minimum throw distance it supports for a screen size of about 60 inches diagonally.

No photos of my unit yet, as it is still in the trunk and it is raining outside. But soon. I'll keep you all updated as to what this thing can do.

I couldn't tell you anything specific about your projector, but it's ultimately a matter of whether the lenses can focus that close. The projection size you get also depends on how much you have to hem in the raster from any burn-in area. All that considered, it's easiest to just give it as much room as convenient, then just project onto a blank wall without borders

I previously considered an LCoS projector as an alternative to a CRT. Have you had any experience with those? The problem I have with them beyond other concerns is I bet they have severe input delay.

I don't know if this NEC projector will have any lag. I learn towards the hope it will not since it more like a PC Monitor than a HDTV.

>> No.4811428

>>4811419
Experience with LCoS? No, but they're like any other digital with respect to inputs. Your CRT projector shouldn't exhibit any particular lag. However, higher end projectors often have automatic built-in scalers, so you might not get simple 240p and obvious scan lines.

According to the setup manual I should not need to adjust projector height to do this assuming the "floor" is a table it will be sitting on across the room is a couple of inches shorter than my bed and the 12.5 degree angle will move the image up a little bit. It seems like the image covers the wall pretty well at this height. It is as low as I could get it while still projecting above my bed.

The thing about it is it just looks ridiculous in my room. Maybe my opinion will change some by tomorrow but if I had to give advice to anyone interested in these things: don't. Maybe if you had a huge garage, but for the inside of a house unless you have a dedicated home cinema just forget it. It is far, far too large.

My back is also very sore and I hope I have not messed it up moving the thing. This was sort of the end-stage of CRT obsession for me, a way to get it out of my system. I think I will set it up, experience it, and then give it away to someone else who has a better place for it. If you are interested in it Kya, it would be yours if you are close enough to come after it when I get done with it.

And if there is any merit to the idea of using a mirror to shorten the throw range.

Rather ironically (or perhaps not) it is the smallest and cheapest of the CRT projectors that /vr/ would be interested in. I had my first problem with my pvm2530 when I turned it in for first in almost a week the standby light lit up but it didn’t be turn on. I turned it off unplugged it and plugged it back in and it turned on like normal. I read somewhere else it can temperature sensitive which makes sense because it was a bit cold at the time. After moving recently I think the yolk go moved very slightly out of place and the horizontal and vertical geometry is also a bit off. Yes, but you need sync. And you need to get 15kHz out of the VGA port on the laptop, if it's a normal 15kHz PVM. Linux works, but if you use Linux you don't need help. For windows, ignore the anon talking about Quadro cards. They mostly work, sort of, but a laptop with a suitable Radeon mobility card compatible with crt_emudriver 2.0 is a much, -much- better option. Not to mention a shitload easier and faster. And it can give you composite sync out of the computer, so a VGA-to-4BNC cable will also work. Either way you won't have to combine sync and won't need the T-connector. And crt_emudriver is required for GroovyMAME, which is godlike for CRT's. Google for more infos, or try the link below.

What this anon said. But this PVM has all the geometry and some convergence adjustments on the D2 and D3 boards. You want a thin/jewellers screwdriver of either type. Google the service manual of the 2530 or 2730 - they're the same set in different regions, and the geometry and convergence adjustments are detailed in there. Just remember you're not doing the setup from scratch, only those two boards (D2 and D3) and the HStat/HVR (The knob on the big red/orange block on the back of the shielding around the tube). Personally i would look up how to discharge a tube, but don't actually do it - just wave your lead around and under the orange Hstat block while the set is running to check for any small coronal leakage. If nothing happens then, you'll be fine.

Just looks up Jason Nutter as well. Haven't watched through his first 2030 vid completely, but that set doesn't have the D2 convergence board and might not have an equivalent of the separate D3 geometry board either. And the HStat is meant to be adjusted while it's running and on the 2530/2730 is easy to get to.

There's much more room inside the bigger sets, not that i would want to have to adjust the yoke or convergence rings live without folding out the B and D boards on the side.

You're not wrong, now, but older model Quadro's need you to write/convert an EDID (because they don't use one in regular format). And they're nice and glitchy and sensitive to timings and the way they refresh. Newer ones might be a bit easier to work with, I'll grant you. But either way, a compatible Radeon card is a shitload better because it can use crt_emudriver, VMM, ArcadeOSD and GroovyMAME.

This is circular logic. How are you going to help yourself if there are no resources to help you?

The basic gist for getting 15khz to work in Linux is

>learn about xrandr and cvt
>use cvt to generate a modeline in the resolution and fresh rate you desire
>plug this modeline into xrandr and a newmode
>use xrandr again to add the newmode to a particular output (probably VGA-0 DVI-1)
>select that mode in your emulator of choice or create custom configuration files in retroarch, or use it as your desktop resolution
>to make permanent changes exit xorg.conf to reflect the newmode

Projector Update:

I got the service remote in today, and as soon as I tried to enter the adjustments menu I was asked for a passcode. This induced a mild panic, but it was quickly alleviated when a simple google search revealed the universal pass code is 3151. With that I was able to go through the blurry, misconverged, upside down menus and set the projector the correct orientation. So now I have a blurry, misconverged, but right-side-up image.

The next step I am not sure of. Either focus, convergence, or changing the screen size setting. Have to do more reading.

A Dreamcast over VGA isn't going to work on a CRT TV. Your options for that are either Composite, S-Video, or RGB (SCART) if you're in Europe/have a transcoder. If you interested in playing a lot of Dreamcast stuff, I'd say picking up even just a cheap PC CRT would definitely be worth it. A VGA Box grounds a few of the contacts on the DC's video connector to switch the console into VGA mode, and includes a few components inline on a few of the signals the console is outputting to bring them into spec/etc. The cheapo ~$15 cables -technically- work, but the quality they provide is poor. Either getting a box or having the console modded to have a VGA connector and a switch would offer better picture quality.

Depending on the games you're interested in playing, and the PC CRT in question, you could also use it (relatively) easily with a PS2 for 480p titles.

>>4822504
I'd at the very least use S-Video. Everything is going to support standard mode, which is CVid and SVid.

That said, DC still has rather high VGA compatibility. Of all the titles put out in english(294, not including some later indie releases), ~84% (247) support it natively, and 95%(278) if you include games that can be patched for VGA support; That leaves you with 16 or so which are stuck without support.

Ask to see the back of it if you can, since $100 for the monitor if it’s a PVM isn’t bad at all since IIRC the tubes are rated at 600 TVL and the only better-looking PVMs than the 127X series are rarer than hen’s teeth.

I had a really good time using a CRT to play retro games on a PS2 at a relative's household. It had such bold fucking colors, and the sprites' patterns felt like an arcade and shit. But they had to throw it out, and I didn't have nearly the space for it. I really miss that thing. I do have a CRT but there's no point in setting it up when it doesn't outclass the HDTV for much.

If I had the space I would get a nice fucking CRT TV, get that fucking converter box, and watch them old channels. I think the glass is just better for you than LCD. Much cozier and stuff.

>CRTs are no longer produced because they have inferior picture quality versus LCDs

CRT's have more vibrant colours and better black levels than any LCD and they can produce a native resolution every time where as LCD's always upscale resulting in inferior picture quality.

They aren't produced anymore because LCD's are cheaper to produce and are aesthetically more pleasing to the consumer. That's it.

>CRTs emit dangerous levels of X-rays or other forms of radiation

The X ray radiation is minuscule. If it were really a problem you would have had people becoming ill everywhere in the 20th century. As for the electromagnetic radiation, this is only a problem if you sit right in front of it. EMR drops considerably with distance and at a distance of 4 to 5 feet from a 21 inch CRT TV you are either out of the field or at the very least in the lower part of it. Playng a video game for a couple of hours from a few feet would do nothing to the individual. CRT PC monitors are the only ones I would not get as they are so small you have sit right next to it.

>CRTs always have easily-visible flicker

Not everyone is sensitive to it. Though I admit it sucks if you are. This also goes for the sqealing noise.

>CRTs always cause eyestrain

If you stare at anything for long periods of time including very small text and any bright screen your eyes will strain.

>CRTs are harmful to health even when used properly

How?

>CRTs contain lethal amounts of electricity, even when unplugged

True. But unless someone takes the cover off and starts messing around without discharging it's not going to hurt anybody.

>CRTs need calibration more than two to three times a year

Which ones? I've never heard of CRT's needing this much calibration.

>Analog CRTs have more processing time than digital LCDs due to poor RAMDAC performance

LCD's have far more processing going on in the background than any CRT. That's the reason why CRT's don't have input lag on them.

More shaders on PC CRT monitor. Any blurriness is due to my shaky hands. In person it is razor sharp. I am convinced now that on a smaller sized 15" or below monitor you would not be able to tell any difference between this and real scanlines if you were sitting more than a couple of feet away. Anons who are settling for 14" PVMs may want to consider looking around for a small PC monitor if they can find one. Tricky this is 15" and smaller monitors were pretty uncommon past the mid 90s.

When you really get down to it what are scanlines anyway? They're the space between lines of pixels drawn on the screen. To be specific most people use the term the wrong way. The lines of pixels are the scanlines, not the black space.

Basically: more TV lines in a monitor/finer pitch + lower resolution = thicker black lines.

There's nothing special about that black space. It's just space skipped over by the raster as it is being drawn. When one uses software scanlines they are simply programming the scanning electron guns to pass over that space. Just as it would be in hardware scanlines. The trick is getting the ratio of black space to drawn lines right, and in the case of using software scanlines on a CRT monitor that will have hardware scanlines you have to make sure they don't interfere with one another. You want them to not overlap in an unsightly manner, and you don't want them to add up to the wrong amount of black space.

I think with software scanlines you want to push the resolution of the monitor as far to the limit of the pitch as possible. This will ensure as much of the screen as possible is being covered by pixels (and thus less black space) before you apply your software scanlines. At 1600x1200 the distance between hardware pixel lines is very, very small. Small enough you can put your eyeball right up to the screen and have a hard time discerning any scanlines. Even in camera zoom-ins it is difficult. So they stop being an issue.

From there adding in the appropriate amount of black is up to you. I add less black than when my monitor is in true 240p120hz mode because I prefer to emulate the look of a coarser pitch CRT.

Of course, there's more to it all than just black lines. The lines of pixels are emulated as well. They are not just plain straight lines. The beam width is variable. But that's another post.

Well, I worked on the projector some more tonight. Didn't take photos, sorry. I added sheets of white paper around my screen to fill it out a bit more.

I have adjusted
>angle of degree
>manual focus
>manual convergence
>digital center focus
> digital edge focus
>digital convergence
>digital geometry
>many kinds of geometry convergence options

And the result I get is an image that is still not very focused beyond the very center of the screen, and has massive convergence issues on the sides.

I think I might be about done with this thing. ANY small movement of the projector will ruin all settings. ANY change of resolution will ruin all settings. You can copy settings from one resolution to another but it doesn't preserve picture quality. It has to be converged again.

Watching some video on it I can see the potential there. I can see the amazing black and flesh tones these things are known for.

But I've read some of curtpalme.com and seen how insane some of the guys there are. They are still tinkering with their CRT projectors DECADES down the line. I can see how far this rabbit hole goes. I've been down other ones and I don't think I want to go down this one.

Still, I'm glad I went as far as I did.

If you get one of these you MUST permanently mount it. Putting it on a table is not good enough. It must be anchored to the floor or ceiling. And you probably want to pick one or two resolutions and stick to them. Even though this is a multisync projector it is not like a multisync PC monitor in the sense you can change resolutions and then adjust geometry in a span of a minute. Everything is painstaking here.

I've seen some comments here and there that these things might become sought after or collectible in the future. lol. Not. a. chance. in. hell.

It sounds like your lens corner focus is fucked, and you don't know how to use zone convergence. Might as well default all your settings and try again. You were right. I didn't know about the zone convergence. Using it I was able to get convergence which is about equal to that you would see on a common rear projection television (not that great). But that was with only about 10 minutes of convergence correction.

So now... back to the drawing board. Start over. Do it right. I did find some more guides on avsforum and curtpalme that I had not seen before, and those will help too.

HD crt sets actually have equal lowest delay to every other CRT. The issue is that it can fluctuate depending on content/port. Some of the HD sets can go from 1µs to 40ms. Where as most PVMs and pc CRTs are 1µs to 50µs (with some PVMs even having up to 10ms of delay for interlaced content).

Most likely you will never notice it. It is well researched and people just like to bitch.

>> No.4829112

The most notable was Sony PVM20M7MDE.

It does some weird frame doubling that introduces a 8-10ms delay. This is only true for 480i content, as all other formats were 1-50µs.

This specific model is not unique to this issue either. It was just the first one talked about as I think it had something to do with smash tournaments or something. Required a $600 Rigol Oscilloscope to notice this too.

>>4829097
I suppose it is possible some HD sets do have "thicc" pixels or scanlines. But the real reason a person would use the HDCRT is cross compatibility into ps3/360/wii territory with one set with the least amount of delay.

>> No.4829120

>>4829112
Probably should elaborate why some PVMs do this with specific content. Also why it can be more than 8.3ms too.

The buffer waits for the next frame to be ready before showing you the end of the previous one, but only needs to wait for half of it since that is all that is drawn for a "full" frame with interlaced content. Half a full frame is 8.3ms at 60hz.

Why would it ever be more with PVM/BVM or pro sets? Also why could it be more with 2005+ CRTs or specific HD CRTs? Sometimes the buffer would wait for a third interlaced frame to be started before showing you the current one. So you would get 24.9ms of delay for 1.5 frames of inspection... OR 33.2ms OR 41.5ms for 2 or 2.5 frames of inspection. This is why some HD CRT sets report 1-50µs for their lowest, but their max is 8-42ms, as with non progressive content it does some crazy 1.5-2.5 frame inspection to make it look better.

short video of the projector working. I have completed a basic set-up, and I know the methodology now so it is just a matter of doing the work to bring out the best I can with it.

However, I believe I must rein in my expectations. After more research about this kind of projector I've found that it was a subject of debate on whether it could properly resolve 1080p at all, nothing close to the 2500x2000 it lists as a maximum theoretical resolution. Right now I am running 1024x768 since it was easy to work with and looked the best starting off. I believe 1280x960 should be possible, however I may run into the limitations of my kludged screen.

I got it quite a bit better than this later after I realized I had completely missed an option that let you select which zone of the screen to focus within inside of one of the controls that already targeted a specific area. This projector allows extremely fine control over the image, it's just a matter of me taking advantage of it.

At this point I would say the image is fully resolving the 1024x768 across the whole screen (I can see pixelization). Now to try higher and lower resolutions. Native 240p should be possible with this unit.

>> No.4829793

>>4829134
It's usually recommended that projectors in that range either be ran at 720p or 1080i. Try both, and see what looks best to you. CRTs do interlaced scan with a fairly small amount of flicker, and you shouldn't experience weird motion tearing in quite the same way you would on an LCD, so it isn't necessarily a compromise. Mine has the bandwidth for considerably over 1080p, but less than anything near 4k, so it stays at 1080p.

>> No.4829801

>>4829370
More advanced later projectors, possibly yours, have built-in scalers that exist solely to eliminate underscan and overscan to fill the raster. I found out my unit did that, but it's not a big deal because i'd rather play on a conventional CRT, and save the projector for movies and TV.

>> No.4830206

I was doing final adjustments to the projector image today and got focus about as good as it is going to get across all three colors. This too a long time, about hour by itself of moving patterns around and adjusting back and forth. When it was done I could see scanlines across the whole screen.

Then I stored my settings and was moving on to correcting the convergence to finish things up and the remote stopped working -_-

I have no idea what happened. I don't believe I pushed any strange buttons to disable it, and I can't even find any reference to being able to do that. A few buttons still work, such as power on and off, static convergence, and pic mute, but everything else does nothing.

I am one of them. I don't use tv-outs. I have looked at it and there are a lot of parameters to study and tweak so that will be further down the line to see what I can do with it. Right now I use aperture.cgp with a set of tweaks to my preference.

There are two things I do that are a bit strange.
1. I run my CRT monitor in "high" mode as opposed to 75 ohs. This increases the luminosity of the image. Most CRT monitors don't have this feature.
2. I adjust display gamma in shader parameters to input gamma of 2.6 and output gamma of 1.8 I have found this gives the image better contrast on a CRT monitor and makes it look more like it ought to. No details are lost.

However, even though you can sync to 2560x1600 and display it, you are not going to get anywhere near resolving all the details of the resolution. I have made test patterns which are are alternating black and white lines running in horizontal and vertical directions and so far I can't properly fully resolve 1440x1080p. The lines are not clear enough even in the center. But 1280x960p fully resolves, so I will stick to that since I can also run at 100hz.

I have been thinking over what game to play through first and I believe I might try Punch-Out!! because of the lag meme

That title would actually belong to the GDM-F500. The one linked is not only from their lower end/productivity line, but also slightly later model.

The CPD will actually support horizontal frequencies slightly higher than the above two (130khz limit vs 121khz), but the tube is of a lower stripe pitch than the F500 (.24 vs .22) and with a chassis sporting lower end parts, likely with lower bandwidth ratings.

Don't get me wrong, it'd still make for a really nice display, but it just isn't the FW900's brother.

These settings do not correspond to any particular thing or attempt to emulate any particular display. I simply chose them for my own particular monitor which is a Hitachi Superscan Elite 20 and thought they looked good on it. I just went by gut feeling of having looked at many CRTs in the past of all different styles and build qualities (including PVMs, diamondtrons, arcade monitors, etc).

I play in 1600x1200@60hz and when starting a game go through this procedure

>set aspect ratio to CUSTOM
>Integer Scaling: ON
>scale image to closest size that is under 1600x1200 (for 320x240 it's exact 5x scaling both directions)
>go back and set Integer Scaling: OFF
>go back to x resolution and press start on it to reset it to 1600
>use monitor controls to resize V size and center to fit screen if necessary

Once I do all that I get an image which, to me, looks right. Looks like a good arcade monitor. Maybe a little -too- good compared to the real thing you'd find out in the world, especially when it comes to corner focus and convergence. But I'm not complaining about that.

I have two HMD-A440s in storage that are similar to it and I have tried RetroArch and other modern games on another one I gave away and the results were as good as you could ever want. You don't really need an awesome super duper top-tier PC CRT to get good results with shaders.

The g220r is a little smaller than typical, so that might actually help it more. .24mm slot pitch at 17" is a fairly coarse pitch for a late model PC CRT monitor.

I do have this dot pattern I made which is high resolution. You can display this 1:1 on a CRT monitor at most resolutions to see if you're getting get the full quality you are looking for. However, this is a very severe pattern and even if you aren't getting it 100% the high res is probably still worth it if you can get it with a fine line pattern.

Can your monitor actually go that high? Just because max resolution is some crazy high number doesn't mean the "working accurate range" is anywhere near that.

>> No.4835123

>>4835048
The answer is a little complicated. The dot pitch on the monitor is .28mm
The viewable image area is 18.7", and 14.96" wide.

14.96" = 379.984mm

379.984 / 0.28 = 1357

So there's room for around 1350 dot triads across the screen. So it's roughly something like that many TV lines. But that's only part of the story. The signal strength and electronics of the monitor play a role too. And the shielding of your video cable. I use a BNC cable that breask apart into separate connectors, but it is coming from the DVI-I out of my GPU and passing through a DVI-I to VGA adapter. That degrades signal quality a bit. I can see some interference in the signal on these test patterns (it's nearly invisible in practical usage).

For vertical lines it's about 1017 lines, probably better to round down to 1000. I did some tests just now and found those numbers to be pretty accurate. 1600x1024 shows the vertical bars almost fully resolving, and horizontal bars are fully resolved, but that may be due to partially setting my vertical size to be a bit past the bezel. That makes a difference too If you can't fill your screen out fully you aren't getting the full benefit of the pitch.

Running interlaced or lower refresh rates will help sometimes.

High-impednance simply means there is no electrical termination on the video inputs, 75ohm or otherwise. This is sometimes fine, but if you're using VGA cables it degrades the image by producing signal reflection - eliminating signal reflection is what the terminations do. You might not notice much on 240p, but it's there, and the higher the res the worse it will be.

Question. What the fuck is the ps3 doing to the ps1/2 games to make them so soft and inaccurate looking?

I have an OSSC, Framemeister, etc.

I was testing out a ps1 game on ps3 directly hooked to a capture card at 480p, 720p, and 1080p with component.

Then I tested the same game on ps1/ps2 with scart and component (all configurations for ps1/ps2 looked pretty much the same, scart/component were identical).

I hooked the ps1/2/3 to the OSSC via scart and component as well.

Then the ps1/2/3 to the xrgbmini via scart and component.

The clearly best and most crisp image is no doubt a ps1/ps2 through the framemeister. In all cases the ps3 was the softest.

My end goal is to record while using my pvm/pc-crt for my main monitor. The framemeister sucks at going from progressive to interlaced. (The OSSC sucks at almost everything so I am selling it.). I thought using the ps3 to force 480p to the framemeister would work, and it does, but the image is soft and nothing like what it should be. Through the framemeister and not, the ps3 ruins ps1/ps2 games crisp pixels (worse with smoothing).

Anyone have any ideas? Is there a device that can turn random 240p and 480i signals into guaranteed 240p? Everything seems more geared towards 480p to 240p. I know there are not that many games that have mixed resolutions, but for those that do I want a good solution for my current pvm/pc-crt and recording setup.

I have a first generation ps1 (I have others but thought testing was moot) and my ps2 is the last fat to have the s2 port (also have other ps2s, but again moot).
>>4835843
As for this question. I might just use my ps3 for ps3 games. Use my ps2 for ps1/2 games through a framemeister. But bypass/split the framemeister scart/component to my monitor and just have shitty recordings for any game that swaps resolution. Same for other systems that do this. There realistically are not many games that pull that shit so I don't think it will be a problem. I will not see the issue on my pvm/pc-crt but the recording will.
My setup would be (for 5th gen and older + Wii)

System > splitter > rgb cables > pvm/pc-crt

The set up process is lengthy and requires a lot of research beforehand or you will never get an image which is better than what you would get with a cheap, crappy projector. You have to understand throw distance, angle, how to focus, and the order of operations for sizing the image, positioning it and converging it. You'll probably have to redo everything at least a couple of times before you get an image that starts to bring out the potential. Once you know what you are doing it is easier, but still takes time. Even someone who knows what they are doing it will take at least an hour, and probably more to set up. If you want a really god image it will take all day.

At 1280x960@100hz I can see scanlines in middle of screen extending about 75% of the way to the edge of the image. However, in a test pattern of alternating black and white lines I am able to resolve all lines across the entire image (with the concession that corners are fuzzier).

At lower resolutions such as 640x480 scanlines are fully and easily visible across the entire screen. I have not tried native 240p yet however I am 99% certain it will 100% resolve that across the screen in very clear fashion.

Kind of related, I have a viewsonic g90f that I want to use with my modern PC, I can connect it over DVI but it only does 60hz max when this monitor can easily do way more (I keep it at 1600x1200). Windows XP machine: connects via same dvi adapter as on win7. Was able through windows or my graphics card settings (don't recall which) to set it to 1600x1200 at 120hz, no issues. Could also go 1920x1440 but at lower refresh.

Windows 7 - I can set it to 1600x1200 at 85hz and that is the highest they give me access to. nvidia control center allows me to create a custom resolution of 1600x1200 at 120hz, it allows me to run it in test mode (the try it for 15 seconds thing) and appears to up the refresh rate to 120hz (the monitor doesn't turn off and then on again for the new resolution because it's still the same res, but moving a window around is noticeably smoother), but then after confirming that it works, it goes back to 85hz.

I have two 7 machines and tried the second, this one has a dedicated vga on its card. Same nvidia software. Despite this, the same behavior and the same limitations. Makes me wonder if it isn't something with either nvidia cards (my XP was an ATi) or maybe something with windows 7 itself (been perusing some forums from about 10 years ago with a lot of people complaining that after switching to windows 7, their 120-160hz refresh was being hard locked to 85hz).

Might try a different OS, maybe installing 64 bit XP on the problem 7 machine will let me see if it is the OS? Or maybe find a Linux distribution I can boot on a USB drive that supports the hardware?

I may have to go back on this a bit. After fiddling with screen controls a bit more and getting the image on each monitor as identical as possible they are very, very, very close to one another. I believe the number of TV lines are identical, and any difference in the image is down to quirks of the particular units and the way I am looping video. Of course, the 1702 has S-video input, so it may win in the end when I can get that going.

I will say that each of these are very good monitors, even when restricted to composite video. They look "right". They look retro, but not in a way that degrades the image. The case design is aesthetically pleasing, and the round tube has a warm and full picture that still doesn't smear the image. I don't know what the color temp on these is, but I imagine it is somewhere in the 6500k area.
