I have two, but neither works reliably. One is severely water damaged, yet the motherboard apparently still works because it boots up and displays the menu. The drive mechanism is completely shot.

Not much you can do about saturn shoulder buttons. They differ from others as they dont have a magnetic ruber piece that is used to hit the contacts. My Saturn is in intensive care. The gears/motor that moves the laser keeps trying to move it down (towards the front of the console) when it's already as far in that direction as it can possibly go. Because of this it won't even attempt to read discs even though the laser itself and the disc rotor work fine.

If anybody has any ideas, that'd be helpful.

>> No.4805736

>>4805670
Well you could always buy a broken one on ebay too and use it for spare parts.

>>4805708
Have you tried disconnecting all the wiring and reconnecting? I know one of the pots adjusts the timing of the motor on certain models. Theres more pots on the model 2 i think... dont quote me on that! Anyways, its worth a shot. Dont mess with the cd drives laser pot, just the other ones and try foogle to find out which is which (its been a while i cant remember which is which). What were all the chips on the Saturn for.

It's got to have a CPU and RAM at minimum. I've heard about VDP1 and 2, and there's gotta be VRAM. There's probably an audio coprocessor, with audio ram. There has to be a video encoder and audio dac. What else am I forgetting? There seems to be a number of chips on there that are more than glue logic. You need to buy a broken saturn and hope the cd drive is functional. You can always get a new laser, but the whole mechanism ( while similar to other consoles cd drives) is designed for that specific saturn model. Battle Garegga on Saturn is to my knowledge (almost) arcade perfect and has extra options over the PCB like an arranged soundtrack, pink bullets and screen alternatives for playing in hori mode. Really expensive though, and now has a modern port on PS4.

Layer Section/Galactic Attack is another great one, plus points for being quite cheap. From what I've read the sound/color is a little different from the Taito board and might be slightly easier.

There are also some other well known ones like Batsugun but I haven't played their Saturn versions yet. One thing most of them have in common is that they are really fucking expensive.

That's actually the most poorly designed Saturn board that was used only to get rid of old stock of chips that they already simplified. The rest of the version 2s get rid of of 3 or 4 of the large chips (and place the memory on the top board instead of the bottom, so the board looks equally busy even though it uses less components).

Yeah, it's still more complex than the n64, but at least it runs without needing to plug in a memory bus terminator. N64 literally needs a buttplug inside it to boot (which sometimes can carry extra memory).

Are you using a Model 2 Saturn? The newest revisions of the console(VA10+) changed the sound hardware which introduced a bug that makes the Japanese Outrun and Space Harrier ports unplayable. These are the only 2 games that have this problem and both got reprints to fix this.

Also hold the disc against a flashlight to check for disc rot.

I still have mine from the Christmas I got it along with a few games. The ones that came with it, Virtua fighter/cop/racing. And I kept my favorites from over the years, dragon force, shining force 3, Shining ark, mr.bones, clockwork knight.

Why the FUCK is this so expensive
I mean I already have it but from forever ago

>> No.4816259

>>4816127
It was a 1999 release, which was post-Dreamcast. Obviously there are many more DC copies, and the fact that the Saturn version is well known to be superior drives up the price.

Final Fight Revenge is a 2000 release which IIRC is even more expensive now.

Is there a saturn flashcart that exists? Or do I just have to go with the mod to play backups?

>> No.4816774

>>4816727
There are ODEs, but good luck getting one. Just buy an Action Replay or wait for the Satiator.

>> No.4816893

>>4816727
Personally I went with a modchip so I wasn't limited to using an Action Replay cartridge for the PseudoSaturn thing, it doesn't really work for ingame saving in large games like Shining Force III. Only problem is that no modchip removes region locking IIRC so you can only use burnt discs for out-of-region games(plus you have to modify the disc image's region encoding using a program) unless you combine the chip with an AR cartridge.

The Satiator will probably be the best solution if that comes to fruition, not holding my breath until I see something concrete though. I'd say go with AR+PseudoSaturn or a modchip if you want to use an official memory cartridge. I will warn you though that if you use an AR you should insert/remove it as few times as possible, the cartridge slot on the Saturn is notoriously flimsy and the AR's connector being too big certainly does not help. If your cartridge slot breaks I doubt many people can fix it.

>the AR's connector being too big certainly does not help
It's 30 microns thicker than an official backup cart. Really not an issue.

>> No.4817030

>>4816893
Man I've taken to taping my AR cart down. Probably awful for the socket (that being said, it's also not that much thicker than a real Saturn save or RAM cart).

only started doing it to make sure the pseudosaturn installer would recognize it, but it's saved me a lot of re-inserts

I'm curious, which modchip removes both the disc check and region locking? I installed mine in 2014 so maybe it wasn't around yet. Also, a BIOS chip replacement is obviously a lot more involved than the simple modchips that only require you to solder a single wire.

Clearly. Region modding the Saturn has been around longer than you have. Use the google to locate chips and instructions on how to install them. You probably won't find a single chip solution for anything except region switching. Also, you being afraid of soldering doesn't make you less wrong.

>> No.4818094

Modchip != BIOS chip replacement.
We can argue semantics all you want, but you know I meant the little boards you can place between the motherboard and CD board. Nobody calls a chip replacement a "modchip".

There are little boards that you can place between the motherboard and the BIOS to let you switch versions. Sounds like a mod chip by your definition. I wouldn't consider putting an UNIBIOS in my Neo Geo using a modchip, no. Same with the Saturn. It's a mod, but not a modchip, which I would consider to be an extra chip, not a replacement chip. In the end it doesn't really matter what we call it, modchip is becoming a pretty outdated term anyway.

I guess >>4817375 was a correction based on your semantics, but it does not change the fact that something like the Phantom modchip does not remove the region lock with the Saturn requiring an extra mod, unlike the Playstation where a BIOS chip replacement isn't necessary.

Keep throwing those assumptions and ad hominems around, though. I'm done.

The new Chink pseudo Saturn carts on ebay are fantastic. They have a 3 way switch for 1 MB RAM, 4MB RAM that doesn't cause any graphical glitches and 8MB memory that actually can be saved to within the game. If someone reverse engineers them then we could just keep making them.

>I'm curious, which modchip removes both the disc check and region locking?

None of them, since doing so on the cd drive side requires on the fly editing of an entire ISO sector with its ECC regenerated, and the modchip doesn't work on big enough packets of data to be able to do this (it intercepts individual commands which are like 13 bytes each, not 2 kbyte sectors). Doing a modchip that works with that much data in one go would require a chip that is nearly as powerful as the Saturn.
the SD loaders can get around it because they are more powerful than a Saturn, and because they have to break up the data into sectors and then into data packets for the drive; at which point you are already processing data on a sector level and you can patch them on the fly.

There are a handful of games which are multi region however.

Region free bios is piss easy to install with the proper tools though.
