Why Americans loves this trilogy so much?

They're "not bad" platform collectathons at best

>> No.4801736

They're games for kids. People played them as kids and thus have a distorted perception of them. Yes, they're not amazing, but they're perfectly competent and charming.

>> No.4801741

>>4801730
It had charm. Nice jingly music, colorful artstyle, cute characters. Gameplay is okay, but its not like the trilogy is remembered solely because of it.

>> No.4801759

It's a good attempt at making a rare style collectathon in a system that wasn't known for those things.

This. The game is greater than the sum of its parts. These games are actually FUN.

Pretty much every single 3D platforming game on PS1 was a clone of an N64 one, just with the scope tuned down for the more limited hardware.

They're all optional. I only ever get gems on like two levels because I've come to know where they all are by incident. It's 2.9D Mario on Mountain Dew

I was 9 when the first Spyro came out and even back then I had this innate disdain for cringey cartoon dragons. Like, furfag shit hadn't even exploded into the mainstream consciousness yet, but somehow I knew there was going to be this disgusting fandom around characters that look like Spyro, especially with true autists.

With that said, they're playable, but they weren't even top 3 platform franchises on the Playstation alone.

The first spyro is a wonderful collectathon. No gating collectibles with later acquired skills, creative level designs, amazing music, and cohesive visual design.
I can really do without the others in the series but the first is really fun.

Spyro is pretty much it's own genre because there's no other game where you play as a 4 legged creature. All of the platforming and shit ends up being completely unique because of this. Every other platform that stars somethimg with 2 legs tends to feel pretty similar.

>> No.4803758

I've always found weird that people put this alongside Crash Bandicoot. This is nowhere near as good.

>> No.4803797

PSbabby nostalgia. Neither of them are top-tier 5th gen games, but Crash is definitely better, yes.

I will agree that Spyro has comfy aesthetics though.

>> No.4804062

>>4804054
It's true though. Do you think companies would spend so much on marketing if it wasn't successful?

I'm not saying the game is bad, but there are better platformers on PS1 which sold a lot less because they had smaller marketing budgets. If you want to know why X game is so popular, the answer is usually marketing, especially back when the average gamer had dial-up AOL internet and didn't have places like 4chan to discuss games.

>> No.4806041

They aren't great action games, but Spyro games are comfy and relaxing. If you enjoy milling about in levels they're great games for it.

If you're the type of person to just rush to the end or rush 100% completion and turn it off I can understand not enjoying it that much or not really seeing any replay value in it, though.

>> No.4806583

>>4804387
I mostly agree. We first got the game for my sister who was a kid back then and found the visuals cute, that's how I gave it a sceptical go.

I grew to like it and you have to admit it's a polished game with great control and the best free camera on the system.
From a technical point of view, it's one of the first PS game to use level of detail, allowing large, good looking outdoors with a smooth framerate

Now, I'm not a huge fan of the level design and collectathon, but it's still a game that truly impressed me.

I can't speak for the other games but spyro 1 is just genuinely comfy. It was one of the first games we played on our Playstation back at home, and coming back to it at like 20yrs old it was just a good time 'n I had fun.
Nothing too remarkable.
Besides the music.
