I've maxed out my credit and money isn't flowing fast enough for another coaster. Am I just supposed to spam non-coaster rides even though I've got one of each already?
Also how do you people get so much scenery going? I need shitloads of time and money to build just a little bit of scenery and increase excitement rating, often it's not even worth it.

I see you got a lookout tower, here's my recommendation

>build it 5 feet off the ground
>make it only go up 30-40 feet
>coat everything underneath the tower with cheap bushes and weeds
>charge $5 for a ride

It's an easy way to get some cash early on. I'd also recommend deleting the path surrounding the castle and placing Launched Freefalls if they exist.
Also, charge at least $10 for umbrellas.

Some guests will complain about the price, but people will be buying umbrellas at $10 even when it's not raining. You can easily have $2,500 per hour from one Info Kiosk, though it won't work as well for ones deeper into the park.

Launched Freefalls are 10-12 second rides that you can get away with charging for based on intensity. You can easily break 9k an hour with just one tower. If you're playing a park that goes off park value and has them available, you can build it tall without affecting ride time, spiking park value easily.

Nope the elevator might be the worst ride in RCT. The two premade elevators are guest traps that causes your park rating to plummet. Even if you use them as transportation the guest AI will not factor them into their pathfinding at all so you might confuse guests and get them lost or stuck.

Guest AI does not factor any transport ride actually but at least trains, monorails, and chairlifts look nice.

A decent idea for a scenario, but it's ruined by two fatal flaws. It's a pay to enter park, and not a pay per ride park, taking away from the major positive of actually BUILDING coasters in the first place. Also, the lower limit for guest's money is a measly $50.

What this all means is you have to constantly close everything, and then wait for them to come back. But that lowers park value because you have to wait like 3 months to get the full effect, meaning you have to build several more coasters than you'd normally have to, but you cant build them as fast because it's a pay to enter park.

Yeah, you need to manage a fast guest rotation later on. So you need to charge close to 50, have them spend the last on food/drinks and then go home thus spawning new guests.

The park is huge, it's supposed to take time. With loads of older rides and one or two ambitious builds you'll usually make it.

Well, this was a walk in the park compared to the Crazy Castle which had me sweating. Done on the first try, even a few months left. I'm especially proud of the railroad, it's literally the last thing I built right into the built-up park, and without slopes that slow the trains down, instead I built footbridges with the paths.
About that recent discussion of the point of transport rides, on one hand they help distribute guests, but they also work as a multiple ride, this one has four stations spread around the park. And it gets 3.94 excitement rating, since it passes next to so many other rides and scenery. So there is kind of a use to them, other than just being standard gentle rides.

Holy fuck I am so glad I saved a month before the deadline. Failed twice, passed on the third time.

First time I was 5 fucking guests short, and fucking failed. Thanks RNG.
Second time around, I said fuck it and put a no entry sign on the entrance because I thought I saved after the point where I could actually win. Funnily enough, if the game detects there is one there when the deadline hits, it fails you automatically. Learned my lesson.
Third time I placed an entertainer down at the entrance. Apparently that kept most guests from leaving.

Anyway, this scenario was annoying. Every ride is so fucking far away from each other, and the paths in this park look like an autistic kid treated this game as MSPaint. It was pretty challenging to manage all of the rides and generate any decent money in a short amount of time. That woodie I built took so much time to get the money for. It was just a constant struggle.

I think I have a problem with trying to make the park look nice. I get so carried away with it, and then I realize that it's April of year 3 and immediately have to advertise for 12 weeks and throw down as many prebuilts as I can. At least I know that I am going to have a lot of fun with making this park super duper nice. It's definitely a contender for Trinity Islands and this scenario.

Why is advertising so damn strong? You can bring in an extra 500 guests with like $3,000 in like 5 weeks. It really makes these scenarios pretty easy. Hopefully some of the future scenarios will shake it up a little more.

Welp.

I plopped down Microphobia just to draw in some cash, but I actually really, REALLY like the placement of it and how I made the paths interact with the supports and track, so I think I'm going to modify the layout a bit to make it my own, add a block section, and then add some scenery.

Basically, it increase guest spawn rate by an insane amount, independent of the number of guests in the park (unlike ordinary spawning). If you run all advertising campaigns at once you'll increase guest spawn rate with almost one guest per second. Worth mentioning is that this might bring you over the amount of guests the game think your park deserve, with will decimate ordinary spawning. But advertisements don't care.

>>4819072
The most important Newgrfs are the trainsets, of course, so I usually start by picking a trainset I want and then build the rest of the list around it. Sometimes they have a clear theme and it's obvious which other sets will go well together. For example, the Japanese Trainset has a whole set of matching Japan-themed newgrfs that overhaul pretty much all of the base graphics. Other popular examples:
>Dutch Trainset - what it says on the tin
>UKRS2 - UK renewal set
>NARS2 - North American renewal set
>DBset - Deutsche Bahn, German railways
>xUSSR - Engines and rolling stock from Russia and ex-Soviet countries
There are also general trainsets that aren't specific to one region or country. These might be good places to start if you haven't used newgrfs before.
>2cc Trainset/2cc Trains in NML - An excellent set of interesting trains from all over the world
>Iron Horse - generic trains (i.e. not re-creations of specific historical trains), more similar to the default vehicles than other trainsets
Pay attention to track types. Some trainsets come with their own tracks, others expect you to load a generic track set like nutracks.

In addition to a trainset and whatever companion newgrfs it goes with, I always load a road vehicle set with trams (usually just eGRVTS), a planeset (even if I'm not planning to use aircraft), a ship replacement set like one of the FISH derivatives, and some eyecandy infrastructure sets like station graphics or pure eyecandy objects. What a weird scenario. It kindof sucks that all of the rides are like 15 years old and are greatly reduced in value so you can't squeeze money out of them. I like that idea a lot, actually. Makes getting money harder and basically makes your deadline shorter as you have to wait a bit before building any large rides. Ended up finishing that looping coaster on Year 2. It brought in a metric assload of money though.
Enjoyable scenario, sadly not too replayable.

Big Pier is my favorite tiny map. Unlike micro park, there's enough room to build rollercoasters that actually look fun to ride, and unlike Dinky Park there isn't that annoying ass hill to deal with. Plus a park purely on the water is comfy as hell.

My only complaint is that I can't build food stalls at higher elevations.

My steel coaster is indeed the laziest coaster I built in the park. There's still way more room to build decent coasters, at least if I was better at designing them.

I wanted to challenge myself to build a coaster of each type you're allowed to research without mods, with each one having at least a "high" excitement rating. The only one I didn't get was single suspended rail. I don't even know why they give you that coaster on that map since it only went up to a height of 15 with the lowest starting point being 10. Not to mention that single suspended rail runs out of speed super fast.

Single suspended rail coaster, car ride, monorail, and water slide were the only rides I couldn't fit in.

You can pull it off early on in Sim City 4. It's a good strategy if you want a cleaner city. It's a little costly, but if you grow the city fast enough, you can get away with it until you unlock solar.

In theory, it could work in Sim City 3000. The windmills have smaller footprints, and are better when put on a hill. I wouldn't even try in Sim City 2000, though. I remember them being quite pitiful in terms of output, and they're best used to power isolated areas, or to supplement other power plants.

I don't think I've ever had as much of a problem with staff AI ever in my life as I did with this scenario, even in Katie's World. Janitors would just get stuck in queue lines walking back and forth for no fucking reason, Mechanics were getting called to rides that weren't even anywhere near their fucking patrol area, staff would just wander out of their patrol areas for god knows what reason and get stuck in a corner in a footpath. I don't know what the fuck any of that was, that was horrendous to deal with. I was probably much better off not setting patrol areas at all. Fuck that was frustrating.

Anyway, despite my gripes, I very much enjoyed this scenario. I really, REALLY want to make this park look like Morey's Piers, or some really dense boardwalk. The way I built the log flume and Junior coaster under the pathways is really interesting, and I really want to pretty it up.

Welp, that's the last of the challenging parks. In hindsight, none of these scenarios gave me actual, real trouble, other than Katie's World, but that was more of my own doing than the challenge itself. Maybe the Expert parks will give me a bit more of a hassle.

Had an excellent day at Knott's today. Hangtime was great, amazing pacing for a small layout, and one extremely strong pop of airtime from the hill before the cobra roll.

The surprise of the day was Ghostrider, however. I hadn't been on since the retracking, the last time I rode it was extremely violent and almost too painful to be fun. Now, it's not only completely free of shaking and jolting, but the whole ride just feels so much more relentless and aggressive. The speed and pacing in the second half is terrifying, and you go through the flat curve above the station so damn fast, it would get red in laterals if it were in RCT.

Anyone with deep, dark knowledge of 3000 know much about the land value bug? This is where tax revenues in a high-yield city go to zero.

In case you are wondering it happens to be the faggest thing in the simcity franchise.

I have only been able to guess a few points. The engine probably takes the average land value in the city to generate the tax yield per population, and every month it applies it to the RES size, COM size, IND size to calculate your loot. But there seem to be some shitty coding for the average land value. When it gets very high and breaches a certain threshold, like 256 or 65536 etc., it wraps to zero.

The bug affects IND zones simultaneously with the others, which is odd since you would think they had a different land and tax computation than COM and RES zones (the sludge furnaces still pay you handsome taxes for their toxic land).

In this high-value city you can see a fifty year period where the land value crashed to zero. People have reported the land value bug striking after doing things like removing coal plants and such or making a water treatment system; normally this is very good for city property but it causes an already "astronomical" city to get fucked-up.

I had let the game run for a century or so without doing anything, after demolishing power plants, which were all coal, and incinerators. I think the bug terminated as the city reached capacity. IND+COM air pollution set in on a long strip of COM zones, topside (pictured: land value info layer), likely causing the average land value to dip back below the bug threshold.

As an aside:

The optimal tax rate is higher than the citizens and advisors tell you, because of the IND zone demand seed. This seed is a surplus demand of sorts, which triggers RES demand if satisfied, which triggers COM demand, which increased city size raises the IND demand seed, rinse and repeat...

Now that the land values are suppressed below the breaking point, this city can make money hand-over-fist...

You might want to track down the PDF of the old prima guide, which has a lot of good info about the simulation, ordinances, demand.

The IND demand, though, can be thought of in-part as exports demanded by SimNation and is what starts the city, because it is above zero when the city size is zero. The IND demand increases slower than city size though, pic related

High taxes lower demand, but as long as there is at least a little positive demand a new building may appear, and a positive feedback cycle runs.

For some reason I decided to finally get back into OpenTTD. I hadn't touched this save in like a year. I was planning on collecting a bunch of stats and data from this huge Japan game, but that project got out of hand and I think that's why I stopped playing.

There are still a number of things I'm unsatisfied with. The heightmap I used doesn't have enough color levels, so the landscape is just a series of plateaus with steep edges. I used random city placement and then just renamed the towns to whatever real-world Japanese cities were nearby, but a lot of the places where major urban areas should be ended up empty. Osaka frustratingly ended up on an island for instance (and Kyoto ended up on the coast). I've decided that I'm just going to try to make tons of money so that I can afford to "found" new towns (costs ~20-50 million GBP each) where key cities are missing. I need several more in Kyushu and the Touhoku region.
At least nice EMUs are starting to become available.
