baroque is interesting, strikers 1945 is a fantastic shmup, virtua photostudio for the titties, and deep fear for your dose of resident evil-ish cheesyness.

Vertical shoot-em-up with a ton of bosses and 7 weapons you can use at all times. Definitely a standout title for the Saturn, it has always been really expensive though.

Back then, to me, Square/Squaresoft could do no wrong. Practically almost all my purchases for my SNES was from them, and Final Fantasy was the flagship titles with Tactics and 4 still being some of my most fond games. I remember they hype back in 96 when I first saw a commercial for FF7 when Rurouni Kenshin aired. FF7 was the event, as it was a shared experience, everyone played at the time, but its luster wore off immediately to me upon completion while it appears to have maintained a level of popularity here on /vr/. Final Fantasy games practically dictated the most popular platforms back then, as they were system sellers. So I guess it is understandable why there may be many threads.

As for Saturn imports. I am grateful my Playstation was slowly dying, and instead of getting a replacement, I decided to get the Saturn instead. Back then every Saturn owner knew they had to import, so modding the system was required and was quite the personal experience. The timing was perfect as Saturn games were super cheap, with games on the discount/clearance racks, because of the massive popularity Playstation and its Final Fantasy gameswere garnering in my region. The games were cheap enough that it was a surprise when I have over 250 import games for the Saturn.

>>4793050
I don't have Quo Valdis 1-2. I see that game all the time, and its only notable factor to me was the Macross-like art.

>>4793386
I like the VNs and strip-mahjong games. Nothing wrong with them.

>>4794195
Great choices. Some of my favorites for the system. I liked Radiant Silvergun enough that I bought Soukyugurentai (Terra Driver) on a whim. Just because it is a ST-V shooting game too. It still remains as one of my most favorite EA titles. I don't have the Saturn Dracula X, back then and even now everyone hated the Saturn version, and we were all fine with the Playstation version. For such a hated game, I now want it, but it is super expensive now and I wonder why.

1. The guy you're talking about didn't make that game in particular, he made some others within Raizing
2. The stuff he made at Cave wasn't that well liked by the usual Cave fans for not being very bullet-hell-y and having his unique rank and stuff
3. Terra Diver isn't bullet hell, it's more akin to Ray Force. And yes, it's good, and definirelt worth getting since emulation still sucks.

No, a mouse is not necessary. They are all designed with a controller in mind, I only got a Saturn mouse with Sakura Taisen, and was surprised that a good number of them do support the peripheral. While most are on the PC uncensored, it can be easier to find for a console. For Shogi, I'd say the XBLA game is at least in English to get you started. On the other hand, mahjong is pretty simple and one can just learn by just playing. I'd recommend firing up MAME, or even a more fun variant like the Suchie-pai games which is "mahjong, but with cheats and cheating whores." There are other red label Sega Saturn games, but eventually during the Saturn's time Sega only allowed yellow labels at worse, which was just suggestive.

>>4796038
Pretty much what >>4796072 said. Soukyugurentai is like the Raystorm games. It is a simple vertical shooting game. I remember Terra Driver at my local arcade in the ST-V cabinet, and I liked its first stage which used teh Saturn's polygons to render the background skyscrapers, but it was a shame as the game went on it utilized more of the 2D effects of the hardware more and more eventually becoming nothing memorable about the stages. However Soukyugurentai is a nice fun short game. The Playstation version adds one more ship that can be used, but I still feel the Saturn version feels better. I think it worked with the Saturn 3D pad too, and it felt good to use with the game.

>>4796290
I would say probably My Best Friends. It is a simple jigsaw puzzle game, so unlike the cheating hookers in the mahjong games, it is pretty simple to "win". One you finish the puzzle, some video plays with the characters, eventually stripping. It is a very cheap game, found in a $1 "junk" bin back then, so I didn't expect much. It is not bad, especially at the low price, but it goes with the budget character designs which is its downside capitalizing on its red label. There are better puzzle games on Saturn.

No, Advanced V.G. for the Saturn is censored from the PC releases. Yellow label only means suggestive themes, but it probably suggests more than the PS version was allowed as Playstation games at that time went with the Nintendo model for wholesome only games. I would suggest against getting Advanced V.G. as it is a slight iteration on the original V.G., the one that plays good is Advanced V.G.2 on the PS. If you want the sexing for that series, go with PC for the Viper and Variable Geo.

That would be Suchie-Pai Remix, which is a remake of the original Suchie-Pai game from the long-running series. It is a strip mahjong game, but you also have abilities like blowing up a tile that your opponent was going to win with or x-ray vision to see their hidden hand. The character designs are by Sonoda Keiichi, who did the comic Exaxxion (some Evangelion ripoff). For that one be sure to get the Remix version and not the Special (special is the censored version). It is pretty fun, but the computer cheats and tends to have amazing starting hands ready to destroy you instantly.

The flipped ones are just the back of the opened jewel case. It is an old pic tor a prior thread to show that there was no censorship despite and image claiming that the Sega Saturn games were.

I just don't want you to be disappointed. Wikipedia is wrong. Not the first time I have caught articles on wikipedia wrong. From my play of the Saturn version, it does not have the scenes where the characters appear to have a tube of toothpaste exploding at them. Those are present on the PC versions. About Variable Geo, I think the same person probably wrote all the wikipedia articles on it, because there's a lot of inacuracies and flat out wrong articles.

The biggest example is this:
>V.G. Rebirth Dash (PC, Giga, March 23, 2002)
>An update to V.G. Rebirth which includes nearly every other non-boss character (Ayako Yuuki is absent as she is a lesbian) as an option to pair with the player. It also introduces the new character Keiko Hatano.

VG Rebirth Dash is just a bonus CD to Rebirth. It only has a very single scenario with 2 choices. You can finish it in 15 minutes. The rest of the CD is filled with bonus stuff, like artworks, music and videos.

The sad thing is that the vndb.org description was copied from this wikipedia article.

There is absolutely no consistency with stock or prices, I bought Virtual Fighters Kids for a dollar then the second shop in the same neighborhood was selling it for 3000 yen. I think they just eyeball the cover then give it a price, which is why I could be digging through 100 yen bins then suddenly find a 8000 yen Striker '96.

Also found the gun for Virtual Cop, but no Virtual Cop. Keeping it in mind in case I do. Shmups are rare here too by the way, so don't feel like you are getting jewed if you spend $40+ on a import copy.

>i didn't pay $15 for a ¥500 console
>i'm retarded
Taken together I'm forced to agree. Although if you don't get to Japan often and don't have a Saturn but want one you're retarded for not just overpaying by the cost of a supersized McMeal.

That's one reason it's worth at least digging through the ¥100 bin. But better just taking the whole lot. Can you think of any game you couldn't flip for a profit when you're paying less than a buck? Plus you never know when some previously worthless game is going to go full meme and increase in value hundreds of times.

Sealed Saturn games are common as fuck in Japan. I've picked up hundreds of them in the dollar bin. He'd have to try hard to have not come across any.

It's getting kinda hard to find working Saturns for 500 yen these days. You can still do it of course, but it takes a lot more searching than it used to. 1500-2000 yen seems to be more the going rate if it's in decent condition.

>it's getting kind of hard to hop on a train and go a few stops to someplace that hasn't been infested by tourists
We cleaned out all the places that are now tourist traps years ago. I haven't seen a ¥500 Saturn there in a few years years. But I still find them in the places the youtubers haven't been told about yet. Sure, it takes more searching but I did that a long time ago and had a great time doing it. Honestly, these days I usually don't even bother with ¥500 Saturns unless it's modded.
