Any thoughts on console FPS games?

I just beat Alien Trilogy today. Overall the mission structure helps keep things interesting, and tends to make up for the often simple level design. The lighting can be terrible at times, but the game does manage to capture a moody atmosphere. Xenomorphs are surprisingly durable, and their eratic movement can actually make them quite formidable.

Played it some on Saturn the other day for the first time. It’s not bad, a little clunky perhaps. I could see myself finishing it.

I had this one on PC back in the day, don't know what happened to it. Probably lend it to a friend and never got it back.

I've since bought it for Playstation, and its less than spectacular. Lowish framerate and twitchy controls.

Everything else about the game is great, but PC is the way to go with this one.

What kind of 3D engine did it use? It looks polygonal but the weapons, enemies and items are 2D sprites.

Was it 2.5D? I see sloped surfaces, but BUILD engine games had those. I see some polygonal objects like the bed, but Chasm: The Rift and Dark Forces both had polyobjects in levels despite the engine being fundamentally 2.5D.

I like it I guess, but it has a real problem with making the enemies into bullet sponges to suck all your ammo away, instead of just designing the levels around more interesting enemy encounters or limiting ammo.

You really notice it in the later prison sections, especially the tunnels when you lay into a dog alien for 5 minutes with the smartgun before it dies...it's like if enemies in Doom just got more and more health the further in you went, it'd be shit.

I actually enjoyed Alien Resurrection a bit more since it's more a first person survival horror, which was way ahead of its time, not to mention the dual analog controls as well...so play that one next.

The Saturn has a better framerate, but it's missing some of the lighting effects.

Alien Trilogy was also released on PC, DOS. It's a bit troublesome to get it to run at the right speed in DOSbox though, but otherwise it's the best version.

I think it's 2.5D, but desu I have no idea, it looks 3D and at times it pulls some really sick architecture, the likes you wouldn't be able to do in Build.
