Why it was okay to make a Pac-Man clone with some gimmicks?

Same reason it was OK for his parents to raise an abortion. No oversight.

why be upset about this and not the 50 street fighter clones or the dozen MK clones a few years later? There's ALWAYS a clone of a successful arcade game, zero exceptions. Everyone was Zynga back then.

>> No.4787295

While on the subjects, can you actually copyright key gameplay aspects?

For example, I believe Tetris is actually copyrighted. If you make a literal clone, The Tetris Company will sue you.

Devil World probably would get away with it due to the field being moved

That's a good question. I remember hearing that Konami (or maybe Namco) copyrighted playing minigames during loading screens, but goddamn I hope that you can't copyright gameplay stuff.

This game plays pretty differently from Pac-Man, though you could argue it's the same genre. Feels like you just looked at a screenshot of the game, picked your nose, and shat out this thread. 1/10 apply yourself.

Capcom sued Data East over Fighter's History being way too blatant a Street Fighter 2 clone and lost.

You can't copyright ideas. To get hit for infringement on something like this (assuming competent lawyers) you almost have to be trying to trick people into thinking your knock-off is the original.

If Data East couldn't win on a suit against a company that made the most blatant ripoff in the history of ripoffs, there's no way to win an infringement lawsuit.

I mean, the whole shmup genre is just Space Invaders with added gimmicks.
I wish Pac-Man-likes took off more, they're fun games.
My favorite is LadyBug.

One of my daycares had a Pac-Land cabinet in the game room, next to Twin Eagle a fully loaded PlayChoice-10 (with shitty fucking stick instead of d-pad) and maybe others. All on a single light switch to keep us compliant. I sometimes tried it briefly when the SNES and Genesis were taken, but didn't like it much so I usually looked at what was playing in the auditorium to at least chill in the dark, look at the toys/crafts area, get the shared Game Boy from my brother, or fuck about in the tube slide/field games room. I was later surprised at Pac-Land's age.

That sounds like a pretty amazing day care center

The auditorium was just a room with a CRT and carpeted big steps. It was pretty nice. In same strip mall as Funcoland.
