The artists were continuously examining their work on CRTs. The box was made by marketing people who saw only paper representations. Squares are useful for representing relative positions of pixels, but often not the best way to display them. The projector at the cinema uses triangles.

But we're not using CRTs. You're viewing this thread on an LCD. And on these types of displays, the developers have consistently shown a preference for square pixels. Consumers, likewise, prefer square pixels. Everyone who isn't an suffocatingly autistic prefers square pixels. So it seems that is indeed the best way to display them.

What the fuck?! No, they weren't, in early NES era each time you had to make a test build you had to burn a new ROM cartridge, which was time-consuming. Most sprites were designed 'dry' on graph paper, or in computer programs - on compute monitors much more accurate than TVs.

Graphics would only be tested on real hardware once test build was compiled, and even then NES graphics will look different on each TV.

>projector in a cinema
You DO realize that films aren't a digital medium, right? In analog video signal there is no pixels, while video games DO have pixels. Which is why we use pixels.

Blurriness might make things look superficially better, but it actually loses information - it's really hard to tell that the power suit's visor is actually a visor, or what the hell is that thing between her arm and helmet (it's her body.)

I always assumed it's some kind of space warping technology. I mean, there is faster-than-light travel in Metroid universe, so some sort of warp drive could exist. If so, Chozo could apply that tech to let space fold into itself to basically fit more mass in a smaller space.

That's pure fanwank of course, I have no proof of that. However, I think such bizarre scifi explanation would fit the mystique of Chozo race.

In some games, like Super Metroid, or the first couple Smash Bros games, you can go frame by frame to see Samus literally morphing into a ball.
Later on, the Prime games established that it was a matter-to-energy system and Samus is contained as a glowing ball of energy inside a metal sphere which is presumably the Power Suit having transformed itself, since it's now been established that the Power Suit is now an energy construct rather than a full physical exoskeleton suit.

These modern so-called retro titles are made to entertain kids who never grew up even playing on a CRT and the only image they have in their head of "the old games" is square pixels, but it is not how we saw them growing up.

How can you prefer something when you've never even experienced it any other way?

It's why it still kills me to do this day to see what's happened to cinema, if you are old enough to remember seeing a movie with an actual reel-to-reel projector, you'd remember how much sharper and crisper movies in the theater were, even with all the pops and scratches because film's resolution was only limited by the grain of the film stock. But all these 2K and even 4K video files blown up on a giant cinema screen look blurry as hell to me. Sure it's a "cleaner" picture with no degradation from repeated plays but at what cost?
