SNES, Mega Drive and Famicom are ONLY systems correctly rated.
Master System is slightly underrated by Americans and slightly overrated by Europeans, it's definitely not a bad system, it's better than the Famicom hardware-wise (although the Master System, aka Mark 4, was a revision of the Mark III, which was released 2 years after the Famicom). It was a nice system to own back in the day, definitely up to standards and you have a lot of great first party Sega games, and some third party hayden jems, but ultimately Famicom trumps it in terms of catalogue.
It's kind of the same with the N64, which it's slightly underrated in Europe and slightly overrated in America (and not just USA, it was huge in Canada and Mexico too). I think N64 has a few more interesting games in its library than the SMS, mainly because many of the N64 good games are exclusives, while many of the good SMS games are arcade ports.
Also N64 has the multiplayer factor which also makes it a bit more desirable, but the Master System is definitely one of the big systems of retro times. It's not Jaguar or 3DO, come on.

Sadly I think this is correct. Tangentially related, in my area almost no one had a master system. I was a kid at the time (born in 80) but the only exposure I ever had to it was a couple magazine ads and one commercial that I remember playing on a local over the air channel. It looked really great but there was no way I could convince my parents to get me one for christmas. Later I did get a genesis and seeing these master system ads had a lot to do with that.

hardly anybody had any Sega system besides the Genesis, which was a flash in the pan console, with few good exclusives, the rest of the library made up of shmups, sports games, and bad arcade ports, besides their flagship series, marketed towards literal autists, which the managed to ruin past the point of saving after five games

kek. I said I had a sega, not a sanic furry.

In my PERSONAL opinion I think the genesis was an awesome system to own back in the day but i've actually started to prefer the snes library. I'm not big on sports games, most arcade ports are better to just play the original on mame. Again, I think it was a great system back in the day, but to me snes is a bit more interesting to play decades later.

I'm not trying to console war, it's a silly exercise, both systems have good points and good games.

You obviously never owned a Sega console, let alone played any games. My guess is you're a casual.

I'm more of a 4th gen fanboy, if anything. As I said, both SNES and Genesis are amazing, and correctly rated as the best consoles ever.

Is the Dreamcast overrated?

Lots of hipsters praise the h*ck out of it on the internets for some reason, despite having a small and somewhat dull library compared to actual great systems.

It's definitely not a great system, but it's an okay one despite its small library. I don't think it's particularly over- or underrated; it has fans, but most people have simply forgotten about it.

It has more games than N64

When I want to know what's on a console, I search "top [console] games"

Even though no more games for it will be published, it's still necessary to add "of all time" to every headline. Why they do that?

I always wonder if I would have had more friends if I'd gotten an NES. Maybe I wouldn't have grown up as such an elitist prick. Maybe I would have been able to relate with the other kids and talk to them about video games.

Nah, you're just shit at socializing.
If you had a Master System instead of a NES, you'd talk to the kids about SMS games, and you'd want to hear about NES games too, eventually leading to inviting some kids to your house to play SMS; and viceversa.

Reminder, unlike the Gameboy, the Gamegear still holds up after all these years.

**yes, I know Gameboy is fun & not trash. But it doesn't stand up, because it's not color (everyone emulates the NES version over the Gameboy one)**

I'd prefer the GameGear over the Gameboy anytime. After having a C64 and Amiga, the Gameboy to me looked very outdated even back in the day. So I bought a GameGear.

But as nice at it was having a portable Master System it had it's flaws. The thing ate Batteries like a motherfucker (a decent power supply was a necessary equipment) and the very low effort production value resulted in a failure rate somewhere at est. 90% over time. Most of the GameGears by now have at least one tried out, leaking or even blown capacitor since Sega saved money especially on these essential parts.

The capacitors are one of the main problems with other older consoles and home computers too, but not nearly as severe as with the extremely cheap ones that Sega used for the GameGear.

At first, I also decided to go for a Game Gear.
Having color was a no-brainer, but what really determined me to get one was the TV antenna adaptor thing, I was like "wooooaaah, I could watch the TV at school!".
I eventually got a GG, and I enjoyed it for what it was, but eventually I also got a Game Boy as a present and realized it just had more games.
And yeah, batteries was a real problem. And my GG's screen is dead (I know it might be possible to fix it, I haven't tried), my old brick GB still works like the first day, batteries seem to last even longer than before, I don't know.

Batteries today are much much much better than they were 25+ years ago.

This also helps the GG and Lynx of course and I regularly see over 7 hours playtime on modern alkalines or rechargeable speaker with those systems, better in fact than you get with much newer handhelds with their fancy-dancy lithium packs.

Oh please, there are wayy more overrated consoles. Gamecube, PS3(if you dont like japanese games), wii(by normies), the fucking Atari 2600 could be considered overrated as it brought the video game crash but I at least give it credit for making home consoles popular. Hell id argue you Saturn fans overrate trhe console cause its full of jap exclusives you can only play if you know the language.

PS3, Gamecube and Wii aren't retro though. Atari 2600, no one ever talks about, won't even consider it overrated since it gets bashed on for the video game crashed. As for Saturn, it gets bashed on too, definitely not overrated. SNES is the king when it comes to overrated consoles.
