/a/ is obsessed with Dragon Ball Super and shit-talks Z fans. Let's have a fun thread discussing Dragon Ball games and show some love for the retro series.

Anyway
Super Butoden 2 > Hyper Dimension > Super Butoden 3=Buu Yuu Retsuden
All the DBZ fighters you need.

Yeah I wouldn't give to much stock into what /a/, of all places, cares about DBZ.

Anyway, I wish the old games had more movie characters in them. The movies next to the manga are actually my favorite things about DB.

>>4774456
I definitely know what you mean. That's why I like Butoden 2 so much in terms of roster and story.
Many of the non-retro DBZ games have movie characters, like Slug, Tapion, etc. But I always preferred the old 2D fighters to the modern ones.

>>4774460
Yeah man, Butoden 2 is tight with Bojack, Broly and Zangya. 3 is really good too, even if it only goes up to Buu. The first game is so hard though, freeza wrecks me every time.

>> No.4774485

>>4774476
Yeah Butoden 3 is really good in terms of gameplay actually, although I still prefer the characters from 2. Butoden 1 is really rough around the edges, they had the right idea but weren't quite there yet.
By the way not fighting games, but the DBZ RPGs for Famicom have movie characters like Garlic or Cooler.

These are translated right? I know the 2 games on the super famicom are translated also.

Was this kick ever in the show? It seems to be in almost all the fighting games.

The Super Gokuden games are weird, but actually pretty cool. Unlike the other games, Gokuden games are based strictly on the manga, and the reason why you're reading a lot is because it's basically a "digital manga" kind of game, you go through the events of the manga and sometimes have to pick some answers, which leads to different plotlines, that most of the time leads to game overs, or slightly different scenarios.
On the pause screen you can access the list of scenes, and you can see which ones you have unlocked and which ones remain unlocked. For a 100% file, you have to replay the game several times and get all the possible outcomes, which include for example Gohan turning evil and joining Raditz, Vegeta and Nappa, or Goku actually doing to the date with Bulma's mom before heading to Namek. Also on the pause screen you can check in what volume of the manga you are currently one, for example pic related is volume 17.
Other than reading, there's the battles which I never fully understood quite well but there's some gameFAQ guide by a guy who is apparently obsessed with its combat system. To me it was a simple rock-papers-scissors system, but I kind of enjoyed it in a comfy way, music is also really good.
The weird thing is that these games came late in the SFC's life, and around the same time DBZ ended on TV, or was about to end, so instead of using what was the lastest thing on the anime or manga, like in the other games, they just did 2 games that started from stratch. Gokuden 2 is the one that covers DBZ (well, and the 23rd tenkaichi), the first Super Gokuden game covers volumes 1 to 15.
Also, despite these games being strictly based on the manga, the title for the was Dragon Ball Z, it would have made more sense if they used the "Dragon Ball" manga logo instead, but probably Ban Dai had the DBZ rights so they had to use that title, I guess.

I've wondered the same, I remember Goku vs Cell had a lot of kicking like that.

I never even played the game, but legendary super warriors seems like a pretty cool game lo.

I remember seeing an add for this in gamepro l think.

I only know of this game because there used to be a pretty active spriting community for the game. I stoped around 2011-ish but they're still going on.

LSW was a big deal to me as a kid because it was the first DBZ game I played that covered the whole z series. No idea if it still holds up. The main thing I remember is the comically bad translation which replaced every instance of dying with losing and killing with beating. So like when Piccolo kills Raditz, the narration says "Goku and Raditz lost..." or Goku yelling "how could you beat Vegeta!" when Frieza kills him.

I wish pic related was good. Actually Tobal 1/2 should have been Final Bout, instead of Toriyama making an original cast. Complete with the roguelike adventure mode.

It's definitely the best one of the 32-bit era games.
As a game, it's too repetitive and there's little variation in the gameplay, however, it's done in a way that's very exciting for a young kid who wants to experience the DBZ action on a video game, even if it's superficial as fuck.
The presentation is great, I love the music (as with most DBZ games), the sprites, the way it goes through the whole story of DBZ, etc.
Also, the hardest part of the game is fighting the androids, because it's the only one of the player vs cpu fights that's actually 3 vs 3, the others are always 3 vs 1 or 3 vs 2.

>> No.4774915

I always thought the Super Butoden games were ass, specially when fucking Sailor Moon got a more traditional fighter.
Hyper Dimension is fun, and Super DBZ is legit.

>> No.4774923

>>4774915
Maybe you never got the hang of the Butoden games, I actually like that they are not simple SF clones and actually add some unique features that help the games feel like DBZ fighting, like split-screen and dashing.
However, if you only played Butoden 1, it's understandable, that one is very clunky. Shin Butoden on Saturn also sucks.

>> No.4774926

It's a shame DBZ got shafted on /vr/ games. Dragon Ball and Z are so much better than super.

I actually consider the 3rd and 4th gen DBZ games to be some of the best or more interesting. I didn't like the post-/vr/ games much besides Advanced Adventure

>>4774923
I played 2 and 3 and never got the hang on them, but again, i like more SF-style games, hence why i prefer sailor moon s or Ranma Chougi Ranbu Hen for snes fighters.
I also liked the bootleg nes version of SB2, Cell Jr was OP iirc.

>> No.4774948

>>4774935
You liked the bootleg but not the original one?
Cell Jr is a pretty good character in the original, can do a lot of tricks mid-air, but he's one of the weakest as far as HP go.
Anyway, Butoden 2 and 3 are still a lot like SF, it just adds new mechanics.
For Sailor Moon or Ranma it makes sense that the fights are more traditional since they aren't so batshit insane.
The SM ones are pretty good, iirc they were developed by the same guys who ported Fatal Fury Special on SNES.
Have you played the SuperS game?

>> No.4774970

>>4774948
Is more of a nostalgic thing, me and my cousin used to play that version a lot.
We never played SB2 until years ago, and by the time that happened, BT3 was the hot shit, so the game just felt off and clunky.
As for Sailor Moon, I played most of the games besides the quiz one and the 3do fighter, and S>Super S.

>> No.4774985

>>4774970
Well, BT3 is not even close to being a traditional fighting game. I never got into the 3D-era of DBZ fighters, althugh I tried.
I played a lot of Butoden 2 as a kid, but I sucked back then, I could beat the crap out of my kid self now. Although I'm still nowhere near japanese player-level.
>S>SuperS
Really? I thought they were almost the same. I only ever played SuperS. Didn't S have less characters? What makes it better?
