Thanks for making a new thread so I could post this before I went to bed.

Evergreen Gardens down.
Finally, after all of these years, got my bearings with earning lots of money with a "pay to enter" park. Apparently closing everything down, as well as the park, waiting for guests to leave, and then reopening everything and using advertisement campaigns to bring people back in nets you around $35,000. I don't know why I never fucking thought of this before because literally every fucking theme park in the world does this. Guess I have a brain disorder.
Regardless, can't wait to build a proper park in this scenario. So A E S T H E T I C.

Bumbly Beach I go, woo.

Commercial stuff should be central, with houses'n stuff flowing out of it. Put parks near neighborhoods, not willy nilly all over the place. Sports arena should be downtown too. For a first city that's great. de-zone a little of that res to the south to get your rci demand a little bit back on track, and pay more attention to it in the future. Maybe build bus stops on every other intersection for quick & easy transport.

IP makes sense but the way its currently applied does not. Artists should have 24 years to make money from a work and then after that their work is released to the public domain. The current copyright laws allow for terms of like 100+ years which means no one that is currently alive will ever be able to make use of works that are coming out. Copyright laws are just hindering innovation rather than inspiring it. Patents are similar but not as severe because the terms at least expire in well under a lifetime. Bigger problem with patents is that they can be applied to software in some countries so things like open source software may come with strings attached that you're not aware of.

>> No.4768715

>>4768690
>Artists should have 24 years to make money from a work
note: I don't mean that terms should be 24 years minimum, I'd be all for terms as small as like 14 years or even less if it came up.

Also the DMCA is one of the worst IP laws to exist and is part of the problem with modern copyright laws. It's actively hurting security research and enforcement of regulations by allowing companies to hide poorly written software behind it and sue people that try to examine their software.

>> No.4768719

>>4768690
Software patents are dumb, because the computers already exist. Patenting software is like trying to patent chopsticks because you just figured out how to pick up a single grain of rice with them. You're just saying "look, I found a marginally novel use for this tool that already existed!" The various patents on the processor etc. should already cover it as a "general purpose computing device." Specific software algorithms are just examples of things that computers can generally do. The hardware patents are meaningless if they don't already cover the universal nature of programmable computers, which they obviously do.

Software patents are also pointless because copyright is a better means of protecting the rights of software creators. As it stands, software patents only continue to exist because big companies spend literal billions of dollars suing each other over them. Whoever is currently holding the bag between Google, Oracle, Microsoft, Apple, Samsung, etc. would not accept it if we tried to end software patents.

The best solution is a relatively short initial term like 14 years, with multiple optional renewals. Make the renewal require a nominal fee (like $100 or something) that doubles with each renewal. This solves the problem of "abandoned" works languishing un-monetized and out-of-print, but it would also be acceptable to the likes of Disney, who could afford to keep Mickey Mouse protected for another century or so.

We as the public do not have to let Disney have exclusive ownership of Mickey Mouse forever nor should we. Copyrights are meant to be a two way street. IP ownership is given to the original creator for a predetermined amount of time so they can profit from it but then after that the work becomes the public's property to inspire new works. Disney created works knowing they'll some day become public but then changed the rules when it came time for them to uphold their side of the deal. All we do by letting Disney hoard their works is let them become more powerful without innovating.

In SC4 the difficulty actually modifies the demand for RCI. Easy is like 4x, medium 2x and hard is zero making it the most realistic. If you do easy or medium it can actually completely fuck with both your city and region demands and even more so if each city doesn't have the same difficulty applied to it.

Hard difficulty doesn't make simulation better in SC4. Effects of difficulty in SC4 are starting money (500k/200k/100k), small boost to tax income (+20%/+10%/+0%) and tiny boost to demand (+6%/+3%/+0%).

Can someone tell me how to play OpenTTD with working bot competitors?

>> No.4775154

>>4775109
Obviously don't use the old TT AI if it's even still in the game. The only half-way decent ones will be user-made AIs that you can find on the in-game content browser. Many of them will only play with "simpler" modes of transit like road vehicles or ships, although I believe there are several that can actually stay in the black with rails. I don't know what they are called off the top of my head because I don't play with AI competitors or follow their development.

Look at some of the recently updated threads in this forum to get an idea of which AIs are still actively being developed. I understand that some users are amusing by starting a game with multiple CPU competitors using different AIs and pitting them against each other to see which works best. You should disable "buying shares" if you want to play with bots by the way.

If the patrol area doesn't encompass the entire station platform/flat ride then sometimes mechanics just won't repair the ride.
If your patrol area reaches to the front of the exit, but the exit itself is not in the patrol area, the mechanic in that area will not fix the ride. You have to select the area under the exit for it to work.

I don't know when OpenRCT broke this because this certainly wasn't the case in the original game, but it was actually a factor that made playing >>4777641 so awful, because ALL of the fucking ride exits in that park are right on the edge of a grid that makes it impossible for a mechanic to fix the ride. It's frustrating because it's so easy to miss.

I just need to learn to click every available patrol square in the area I want the mechanic to go so I can avoid not clicking that one corner of a pathway not being within the patrol area that's hidden by trees that prevents the mechanic from fixing shit.

I've been playing RCT since 2001 abouts. Got it in a box of Cheerios. Have many memories growing up playing the game in the summer, and as the weather is getting nicer here it's been pulling up all sorts of old memories and associations. Being alive is crazy.

I've only recently had how to make an okay coaster "click" in my mind so they don't have 999999 intensity and low excitement. Always liked detailing with doodads but in these most recent parks I've been taking my time in free builds vs scenarios. I've never dabbled with making larger buildings in parks however, so that's something I want to try with this park.

Well, you say you haven't mastered big buildings, but I love what that pagoda area around the entrance of your jr coaster has turned into. Multiple detached outbuildings and winding paths through pretty gardens is absolutely perfect for that theme. Only additional thing I would suggest adding is some water. Maybe a small pond in that empty area between the hedgerow and the station, or a little creek with some rocks and a bridge over it like the cute queue bridge over that bit of track.

>Have many memories growing up playing the game in the summer, and as the weather is getting nicer here it's been pulling up all sorts of old memories and associations
This is totally a real thing and I know exactly what you mean. They say that smells are one of the biggest triggers of memories, and maybe that is part of it, but for me it's feeling when the late-Spring sunlight finally starts to feel really warm and the air starts to feel humid that immediately brings me back to games I used to play at that time of year.

Tip for big buildings: try to avoid making them too tall with large rectangular walls unless you want them to look like barns. That's one of the reasons why your pagoda area looks so good: it matches the scale of the peeps in your park.

>> No.4779641

Building on these ideas, consider raising the terrain under the farther turnaround and adding a small pond. Not only would it add to the theme and look good, having water beneath your ride increase excitement.

Thanks buddy. Scale in these kinds of things is a major autism point for me. It's funny you mention adding the small pond as I was considering doing just that, like it's where the dirt was dug up to create the "man-made" hills around the coaster. I absolutely plan on having some more water-based terrain features with paths, bridges etc elsewhere in the park. I like the pagoda theme and will be using it for a few areas/coasters.

More on scale, I managed a Minecraft city build project for about four years called "Broville v11". I was very particular about the scale of things in the whole project. I'm sure I irritated many of the people who contributed to it by putting the brakes on all sorts of grandiose builds that didn't fit with the scale. I shunned most gaudy large things to be made underground and out of sight. The first building made in the entire map was the tallest skyscraper in the downtown core, which set the scale for everything else in the "Broville universe" to keep the map internally consistent. I also feel like a lot of detailing experience to come out of that endeavour has helped with my detailing in RCT.

I'm 28 now, but sometimes when I'm playing OpenRCT2 it feels like I'm 13 again in my old room at my parents house playing RCT. Especially so if I have some music on from the time as well.

Was playing through Evergreen Gardens and just built this one earlier today. Seems that taking a risk with hills pays off, and it helps to have some stretches of straight track to recuperate after twisting and turning through helixes.

I notice that with a lot of ambitious mega coasters I like to build: allow some breathing room of straight tracks to keep Nausea low and Excitement high.

>> No.4785878

>>4785848
I don't want hills. Not because of crashes, but because it's not realistic. Same reason I don't want a 2km long Bobsleigh, though I don't think length is the problem as I have prebuilt with 6E that's 200m shorter than mine. Different coaster types have different requirements that result in a huge E penalty if they're not met, but I'm having a hard time figuring out what it is for the bobsleigh.

>> No.4785914

>>4785878
Well, other than being shorter, your coaster also has 0.00 secs of airtime and only 1 counted drop. Maybe you should try to add one airtime hill near the beginning, and a couple small drops in other parts of the coaster for speed boosts.

I do like how yours hugs the ground, it looks much more realistic and aesthetic than the other one. Just gotta get those numbers up.

Hello everyone. Perhaps the wrong thread to ask in, but you all seem quite knowledgeable about the City Builder genre, so may get lucky. Basically, I'm after a city builder which allows the following -

1. Free build - no resource expenditure, I can place buildings and infrastructure wherever I want.
2. Individual building placement - no zones or relying or development over time, I can choose which building unit to place where.
3. No population or population requirements.

Bonus for isometric view and the ability to import assets/modified unit textures.

Basically, I want to build a virtual city model/diorama. Any suggestions are much appreciated.

I think you've identified that I'd like to have Caear/Pharohs individual unit placement system, but I don't think it's quite what I'm after. The downsides of those games are -

1. Each building in that game serves a strict gameplay function that has no relevance to the outside world. You could build a city using it, but it's not a very realistic city. Does that make sense? I kind of just want "unit buildings" of different sizes and looks, like a building that looks like an office block or high rise flats.
2. Following on from that point, the aesthetic doesn't appeal - I'm more aiming for a modern realistic or slight futuristic unit look like SimCity.

I guess it's less game, and more model city diorama builder. Probably the best way to describe it - imagine someone building a model city in real life, placing individual buildings in a pattern that they want; now take that and make it virtual.

I really didn't want to fuck with the "smolness" of this park, but I kindof just accepted my fate and made it a spaghettifest to earn more money.

It really took a while to research more than one coaster type that you can make into a shuttle. It's not often where I have to make a Wooden Wild Mouse.

Aqua Park time.

Sorry for the lack of updates, I've been playing other games with friends and stuff. I'm going to beat both games and then make some sweet looking parks out of the cool scenarios, mark my words.

The ride might be on the borderline of a statistical penalty. For example, a car ride wont go above 0.3 excitement unless it is over 333ft in length. Your Go Karts might be too short or just long enough depending on how the game wants to calculate it with a degree of inconsistency.

Toy around in the Coaster Designer for awhile. Here's some general tips

>BANK YOUR TURNS
>try to have the coaster enter the station at 29mph or lower. Not required but it prevents crashes
>Wide turns are better at high speeds, as it's less intense
>if the ride's too intense in spots, try to place down brakes

>> No.4790681

>>4790586
Also, it's usually a good idea to slap down some "flat" rides like a Twist or Merry-go-round to start off. They won't be big draws, but they do make a bit of money and attract guests.

>> No.4790706

>>4790586
Before you install OpenRCT, first install RCT Classic (or RCT Deluxe on GOG). There's an automated "tutorial" on the main menu.

You can also watch it here around 5:36 (last time I remember, the game actually annotated instructions through a nice step-by-step process)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xw6UlMlJ3oI

Then, as >>4790676 suggested, install RCT2 and OpenRCT (with RCT classic installed, you can integrate its features into OpenRCT too). Start with the fail-proof coasters:

Giga Coaster (able to tolerate high drops and turns at intense *banked* speeds)
Twister Roller Coaster (experiment with inversions of loops, corkscrews, etc.)
Spiral Coaster (of the three I suggest, this is easily the best one for beginners as the limitations of height forces you to gauge momentum of going through hills. Not to mention, this specific coaster has the most lenient stats of all the coasters)

But in the end, indulge yourself with death coasters, learn, and have fun.

>> No.4790914

>>4790586
Fuck around in a sandbox scenario (a couple can be found in the /v/pack) and learn the controls and what everything in the interface does, because most of it is really important if you want to make a self-sustaining park.

Also:
>Holding shift raises or lowers any piece of scenery or ride track you are going to place
>Holding Control while hovering your cursor on anything elevated (including other scenery, footpaths, and ride track) will automatically adjust the thing you are going to place to that height
>While still holding control, pressing and holding shift allows for further hight adjustment

>> No.4790945

>>4790586
Try to beat the first scenarios, they're not that hard. If you have problems the RCT wiki have guides for all scenarios. For coasters, look at a couple of real coasters and try to build things that look and ride similarly. RCTs stats system is actually quite realistic so copying real coasters will give you decent stats most of the time.
