that's because it was made by the Shining Force staff after they left Sega, and the artist who worked on it did art for some of the Shining Force games.

You can consider it the official unofficial sequel of the Shining games before they got bastardized by Sega.

I remember going into the store every day (I worked downtown Washington DC and did a mail run type job) and would ask when it was coming out. Finally it did (the first real rpg on the PSX!!!) and I was so excited.

Then I started playing. Did beat it, but let's see. How can we annoy the player:
Give him a character that for 75% of the game is at half strength and half the time can't attack.
Allow the player to miss recruiting one of the two healers in the game (this happened to me) because they decide to explore a location before the story calls for them to go there.
Make it so you have to button mash to get better combat results = numb fingers.

If you too suffered through this and also owned Albert Odyssey for the Saturn, there's a book in the library in the beginning of the game:
"What lies beyond the beyond? No one knows for the journey is fraught with boredom."

Take that back. It's a cute, charming rpg with charming designs and a good soundtrack. The difficulty's low but it has interesting stuff like its seamless world, toys that help you in different ways you can set up combos with, and good plot developments towards the end. I like it anyway.

This shit was generic as hell. Dull, predictable story about a generic evil empire, most of the music sucked and constantly repeating, and nearly all the combat was mindlessly easy and had you just auto-battling through fights.

Only reason it's praised so much is because of the massive list of recruitable characters, but well over half of them are worth using or are just completely forgettable.

Lufia & the Fortress of Doom is exceedingly archaic and generic, but it has a pretty heartwarming story and its localization was top notch. Definitely the most memorable "generic RPG" for me.

>>4770552
The gameplay, the inca-style soundtrack themes, the graphical style and even the last minute wtf plot twists keep me from thinking Granstream was generic. It may have been mediocre, but it was very original in most respects.

>>4769378
It's funny that Beyond the Beyond is so widely (and probably rightly) panned for being generic and forgettable, while Golden Sun is praised by everyone when they're basically the same game. I just finished playing GS2 yesterday (I forced myself to beat it, been in the backlog for years) and I can barely remember a thing about its characters or story. What a forgettable and bland plot. And yeah, like Beyond the Beyond, full of characters that won't fucking shut up.

>> No.4774594

>>4774385
The only people that praise Golden Sun so much are people who barely play rpgs. For most of them it was either their first non-FF rpg or first GBA rpg so they think it's amazing. They make a big fuss about the puzzles in dungeons only because they never really saw anything like that in FF7-9 so they think it's new an innovative.

Golden Sun is really the epitome of "baby's first rpg"

The one great thing about Golden Sun was the djinn system and it being tied to class changes. Battle and animation speed was also fast which is great for GBA (and fast battles should be the norm for turn-based RPGs anyway). Everything else is utterly mediocre. The likes of Lufia II did dungeon puzzles a million times better.

For all its shit Beyond the Beyond at least had a sense of humor to it which Golden Sun utterly lacked.
