Really depends on what mindset you go with because it's so text heavy and slowly paced. You have to be really into it in order not to mind the glacial pace with all the lore dumps and overwrought descriptions of body language.

I loved it when I played for the first time around 10 years ago. It corrupted my save right before I could reach the final location though. Bought the enhanced edition on Steam recently and tried to give it another go, and... I feel like I don't have the attention span to enjoy it anymore. With the modern day's overabundance of video games, movies, TV shows, books, manga, anime etc I just can't rationalize spending dozens of hours reading some faggot's purple prose.

If you enjoy reading. yeah its a pretty good meme. It starts off confusing as fuck, but once you get the gist of the world it gets better.
Not much there outside of reading. Combat is ass compared to other CRPGs, but its tolerable.

IIRC Wisdom is probably the most important stat in the game, since I'm pretty sure it unlocks most of the interesting dialogue options.

It's a fine enough game but it has been memed over time. Nobody experiences it 'naturally' anymore. They go into it with all this baggage about how great and important it is. In its time, people bought it and played it without any of that. The press of its day certainly didn't go around making special categories for it or dubbing it 'nature of a man' or anything like that.

If my memory is correct, Sanitarium got something far closer to that treatment in it's own time, although it was far milder. Torment is a fine game, certainly about as good as you could get from a setting so high concept as Planescape.

It's worth a play but don't expect to have your mind blown. I just played through it for the first time last month after hearing great things about it for years. Coming from consoles, old PC ARPG combat is not a pleasant experience, but thankfully this game is rather light on combat and very, VERY heavy on exposition. PT has a 10:1 reading to fighting ratio. The story isn't all that special, but the dialogue is what makes this game great. It's worth a play but don't expect to have your mind blown.

I started playing it, and the writing is better than average for a video game, but there is SO FUCKING MUCH dialogue that I stopped playing because reading a book is a better time investment. you can kind of just skim it and bungle through situations when you're not interested

you can basically just talk to dakkon until he's op and carries you until annah comes around and she levels enough to backstab everything in the game to death, so when you kind of fuck everything up by not listening you can be like whatever

I don't care

this is a videogame

the easy combat basically lets you fall back on it and just skip any reading that you don't care for

your allies mostly don't care either

It's one of the biggest meme in cRPG history. Even if you come to it as "Story first, gameplay maybe" mindset combined with "I love to read lenghty expository", it's still hard to push through the game, as it is simply not engaging on any level other than being a massive meme and having lots of stuff to read.
A lot of VERY boring stuff to read.
And let's not forget it's one of those "You can talk your way out of everything" games, yet again trying to cover for the fact combat system is just plain broken and full of bug-related exploits.

I can agree on the polar spots for Arcanum and Planescape. Arcanum is how you make a game that comes with genuinely engaging and interesting setting and initiative to read all that stuff and rummage through dialogue options and side activities. Planescape is how you make a poorly-scripted VN with "one true solution" to all quests, usually not related with what you do, but how you build your character.
