What's Westerners hang up with Sonic? It's never had a million-seller, ever, in Japan. If it wasn't for Westerners, Sonic would already be dead and buried.

>> No.4760002

Most of the 90's mascot platformers that were worth a damn got the amount of recognition they deserve. Sonic was fine. Sorry guys, but Bonk and Earthworm Jim just didn't have lasting appeal.

I wouldn't want this, they'd get increasingly more stale with each release. Would you rather have a Metroid Prime or a Super Metroid every 3 to 4 years, or an Other M or Federation Force every year?

>>4759935
It was tired the day it became a thing. It was always so obvious that people who parroted it were doing just that: Saying it was bad because it was popular to say so. The worst example remains that absurd mess that Red Letter Media put out.

I bring them out not because I want to shill, but because they put out videos where they literally could not understand how to play a one-button game and complained about it being bad. It was embarrassing, and what's worse was that people in the comments, including other e-celebs, were saying how right they were. It was almost as bad as posting a video of a player failing at world 1-1 of Mario Bros.

>> No.4760056

>>4760028
Dude what are you talking about? You're acting like there was a time that the Prime games were generally disliked and considered weak. The only one that I noticed a big shift of public opinion on was Prime 3, which got criticized for shifting its focus to be more of a cinematic blockbuster affair a la Halo.
I can't give an honest opinion of Prime 2 and 3, as I only played a bit of the latter before getting bored, and never tried the former. But Prime 1 is a legitimately great game. One of those games I could replay for years on end.

Did anyone else like to make Tails die in 2 when they were little? gaming his AI so he couldn't get out of the muck in the Chemical Plant Zone and then watching him drown gave me one of my first stiffies.
Imagine Tails drowning in mega-muck only a few feet away from sonic, and no matter how loudly he screams and gags, no matter how much he flails his cute little limbs, his hero doesn't notice his presence until the goo fills his little fox-boy lungs to bursting and he respawns.

I always hated Sonic 2 and I feel vindicated by the "ecelebs" and their alleged "underage meme opinions". Even more so knowing a little of the development history behind the game, which was a rushed mess. Sonic 1 will always be best Sonic.

I've played the hell out of Sonic 1 and I don't have to worry about nostalgia goggles because my first actual exposure to it was on the Sega Saturn, which came a good while after I had conquered Sonic 3 & Knuckles.

Not that Anon, but:
When I bought the mobile ports, I found myself gravitating far more toward Sonic 1 than 2. I honestly do not completely understand why this was, the only concrete reason is that Green Hill Zone is one of the absolute best Sonic stages ever made. But I also have a strange affection for Marble Zone, I like playing without spindash and feel that level design built around spindashing makes the games a bit weaker, and I dig the color palette more than I do Sonic 2's.

I do agree that Sonic 3K is much better though, even if I'm more a fan of the Knuckles portion (which I will wrack up to nostalgia).

It's almost like the Genesis was only ever really popular in the West... because it bombed in 3rd place behind the PC Engine even. So of course it's more likely that Sonic never sold that well in Japan... because every Sega system outside of Saturn wasn't that popular.

I mean, It's almost like most people on this site are from the west or something. So of course their biases are towards the shit they like and are familiar with.

I hired a new employee three weeks ago. Somehow, he and I struck up a conversation about music Friday last. He'd never heard of Nirvana.
Not that I much cared for Nirvana, mind you, but they were goddamn huge. This whippersnapper being completely unaware of them made me feel positively ancient.
Initially, he'd misheard Nirvana as "Nerve Armour."

He's also never played anything older than N64, including the original Playstation and thinks $60 of today's money for a game is expensive (remember that NES games were $60-$80 each /in 1980s dollars/, and therefore comparatively much more expensive)

Hold me, /vr/. I feel old as fuck.

First 3 Sonic games are great, the rest ranges from good to awful. Really the main problem with Sonic is that he didn't make the jump to 3D well, not saying he doesn't have good 3D games, Heroes is a favorite of mine, but overall controlling super fast characters in 3D space isn't as fun as when you're doing it with a sidescroller. And since most of the people bitching about sonic haven't actually beat(or even played) the original Sonic games they judge the entire franchise based on the much worse 3D games.

Classic Sonic > Mario.

Sonic was never about speed, he was about pinball physics. The classics have distinct surrealist fantasy environments that are beautiful and iconic. This is lost in NuSonic’s mess of cityscapes, realistic textures, and environments devoid of style. Green hill would not look better if you replaced the checkered ground with an HD dirt texture.

Biggest thing I hate about a lot of modern games.
>"the action is so intense"
>pop some scrubs with ease
>someone comes up on you and initiates a scripted event
>if you're lucky you might get a scripted event that requires a slow qte or to tap a button moderately fast to suceed
>stab guy in neck with a knife you don't normally have access to
>shoot more scrubs
>3 minute cinematic
It's worse than the press right and down to win parts of Sonic 2, with much less interesting and ecletic levels.

I couldn't tolerate Sonic 2 at all until I calmed my autism enough to ignore the special stages altogether. They are just pure suffering and they make a slightly overlong game into a tedious death march.
