is this any good? is it worth the time?

i loved Chrono Trigger and to an even greater extent, Cross. I've liked a few VNs like the dingdongrompa games and the zero escape titles. would i like radical dreamers?

what can i expect?

It's an great "what if" scenario that you will enjoy if you like CC and are familiar with it. The atmosphere is thick and spooky. Soundtrack is nice with a few tracks that would go on to be redone for CC. There are multiple endings, many of them being joke endings but they are hilarious. Just play it, it's short. Plays a bit like an adventure game where you choose where to go sometimes but there's no pointing and clicking iirc

Basically it's story is like a prototype version of Chrono Cross. If you really enjoyed that game RD is definitely worth checking out, personally I think it handled some story elements better. Also, a lot of the music in Chrono Cross are remixes from tracks in this game.

Seems like the creators pretty much disowned this game though, IIRC they planned to rerelease this with CC in Japan but decided against it.

Well, for starters the characters aren't a bunch of anime stereotypes. You almost never see their faces too.
It has battles and other dangerous moments, but it's all done by choosing options. For example, there are some traps in the mansion, like a ceiling with spikes. You have to choose accordingly.

The game is rather short, but there are 6 or 7 endings, I think. Each playthrough takes between 15 minutes to 2 hours.

>> No.4757773

>>4757654
You can complete every ending in like 3-4 hours with a guide.
A blind play-through might take 1-2 hours for the first ending.

It's a choose your own adventure style game.
There is combat, but it's entirely in text, and your health points are vague (you DO need to heal occasionally in certain rooms), and encounters are mostly scripted. Once you know how to beat a specific encounter, that method will always work. There's about 30-40 scripted encounters they randomly select though, and several story-based ones that never change.

You will need to draw your own map.
There's like 16 rooms in the mansion, and it's easy to get lost.

The music is pretty great, and it's very atmospheric. Well worth spending an afternoon on.

Kid on the left, then Serge and Magil.
This is an alternate universe, so it's not the same as Chrono Cross.

In this one, Serge is a bard.

Radical Dreamers is a third Dimension in Chrono Cross. The opening text is mentioned in a computer in either Dead Sea or Chronopolis (I forgot).

It's actually really atmospheric and there's so many branching paths. The Chrono Trigger license is just the cherry on top. Really wish they made more adventures like this

Kato's team completed Radical Dreamers in only three months under a rushed production schedule, prompting him to label the game "unfinished" in an interview for the Ultimania Chrono Cross guide. Kato regretted that the schedule hampered the quality of his work, and explained that the connections to Chrono Trigger were evoked towards the end of the project:

>When I originally started working on Radical Dreamers, I never thought that it would have such an ending. We only had three months for development, and I was just making up the story while inputting data. When I finally realized the connection of the identities of Kid and Magil near the final stage of development, I even amazed myself, saying, 'So, that's who they were!?' (laughs) Also, since there were issues with the media, the connections between Radical Dreamers and Chrono Trigger were intentionally left blurred in the background so that it'd only be recognizable by those who would understand.

>made Radical Dreamers in 3 months

how the fuck is that even possible? indie devs today need like 3-5 fucking years to make one mediocre game.

It's a VN, not terribly hard.
You make backgrounds, you write story, you write music, and then you put in a linear movement system controlled entirely by menu.

A dedicated team working full time can easily pump out a 2-3 hour VN in that time.

It’s a Japanese visual novel that is set in a medieval fantasy world. The amount of branching paths are pretty ridiculous. It revolves around Sias, a powerful wizard, who was trapped in a ring by the evil witch Beatrice. Whoever wears the ring is possessed by Sias, since his physical form was destroyed, kind of like a phylactery. The game deals with the the different characters who are either possessed by the ring, whoever accidentally picks it up, or the various nefarious plots surrounding the people who want to either cover the ring for themselves or bring it to Beatrice so that she can destroy it. It’s pretty cool actually, you can find a ISO online to play it probably, or if you have a Japanese PSN account you can download it for 600 something yen. It’s a really interesting story with lots of replayablitiy and has really great art work and music to add.

>> No.4760104

>>4760034
Also if you’re playing a visual novel I assumed that you read at least some level of Japan. Because it’s in a medieval fantasy setting it does use some basic archaic Japanese grammar but with a guide it’s not that hard at to understand; unlike some historical Japanese games like 下天の夢 which uses a lot of complex archaic grammar, kanji and pronunciations.
