This week I finally sat down with Revenge of Shinobi and committed to beating it. I spent three days working my way up to the final boss, and he had me stumped. No matter how many lives I had he'd wipe the floor with me and I'd get a few game overs and be back at stage one. I finally cracked and read some FAQs to see what other people did and managed to defeat him!
Here's the thing though- I was using infinite shurikens, so I immediately beat it again but with the default 50. Then I beat it on hard mode, now I might go try once more on hardest.
Overall I rate the game 9/10, it was hard but fair and I had an absolute blast. I mean it's not every day I get to throw ninja stars at Spider-Man, Batman, Godzilla's skeleton, and Rambo and Terminator lookalikes. Will probably pick up RoS 3 soon.

>> No.4716190

>>4716185
Yeah the game is very hard on your first playthrough but it becomes a lot easier on replays when you know what to do against different situations. The infamous part that fucks people up is the long jump on the port stage, but that becomes almost a non issue when you use the ninja power that allows you to jump higher. Still timing that doube jump is always a bit scary.
Also you can farm lives on the airplane stage.

Man I lost more lives to that jumping port stage than all the others combined. The most enraging thing was when I'd forget to throw some shurikens before I jumped so in mid-air I'd get nailed by the guy waiting for me on the other side.
I farmed lives with the 2-up in the factory, it was absolutely critical on my first few playthroughs but now I'm to the point where I have memorized virtually the whole game so it's not so important (except for the jumping stage!).
Is the sequel as good?

I've been picking at RoS as well over the last couple of days. Just some small sessions of gameplay, though. So far I've only gotten to 5-2.
The double jump timing almost always trips me up whenever I first start playing again. There's nothing more heartbreaking than when you miss the window of time by a split second when you've fully committed to a jump over a bit.

>> No.4716234

>>4716217
Wait until you get to world 7! This may be dumb but what I found to help me with double jumps was holding the jump button down until the last possible moment before releasing and attempting the double jump.
God speed, it's a good time. If you want to know where the 2-up to farm is let me know, it really helps to get through the game your first time.

The only game I’ve got for mine at the moment. It’s a cute game, but I wish it had a working level select cheat like the Japanese version so you didn’t have to beat everything from the start in one sitting.

Beyond RKA, the main games I want to physically own are Herzog Zwei and the Shining series and I’ll just ED 90% of everything else. Would it make more sense to go with an X5 or splurge for an X7 for save states and reusability for a SCD setup?

False. You obviously don't know what DRM is. Cartridges aren't DRM because it's not restricting people from playing it on their friends consoles. A digital game on the other hand can't be shared if it's tied to your name. For example you might own a game like Sonic Adventure for PSN, XBLA or Steam. Can't exactly share it or give it to your friends/family for free. In fact I can only have up to two PS3's to transfer my digital games onto. In physical form, you can lend the games you own to your friends and family or play it on any console that's compatible to that game. So there's nothing to restrict me from playing Super Mario World on my original SNES or on my SNES Jr.

3 is more fun to replay because it's a lot shorter and easier, but they're both awesome. I just discovered the series about a year ago since I didn't play shmups growing up and always had Nintendo systems.

IV might just be the most kino 16 bit game in existence, that parallax scrolling is awesome and the music is fucking great. I love how some of the songs almost sound like a snes game or something and the ice/water level looks like a snes game, really cool to see all that stuff come out of a genesis.

On the Genesis, I like the Toaplan games. Some of them, like Twin Cobra and Fire Shark, look like crap, but are very fun regardless. And Hellfire is probably my favorite shooter on the system.

Cliche at this point, but MUSHA is really fun to play through, as are both Battlemania/Troubleshooter games. It is sometimes fun to go through games I can actually beat on hard.

And I don't hate Thunderforce at all, I listen to the music on its own sometimes. The kills just feel really, really cheap.

Randomly entered the thread to make one post a few days ago, and this game intrigued me enough to play the first one.

It was really good, but suffered from some oddities. Dying because you were trying to avoid enemy fire and then the screen crushing you was fucking annoying, and was pretty much the only reason I died in my final run of the game.

Really enjoyed teaming up with the Prince in stage 5, even if he mirrored your moves, it was nice to have an extra gun and not just let this guy be attached to you or whatever. Gonna jump on the second one soon enough, shame it didn't get an English release, but it's not like the story was going anywhere anyhow.

Guess I should start using threads like these for more recommendations.

My brother gave me this Genesis+CD a while back, it came with a Konami Justifier, some racing game for the CD, and a power supply in the CD which I'm now only learning wasn't the right power supply(Full disclosure, this supposedly came out of a crackhead's house).

I now just got all the necessary cables, or so I thought.

I plugged it all in, and only the 3 lights for the Genesis came on, so I know it's working fine. The Access light for the CD however, did not, despite the fact it has a game in the tray and the Genesis does not. I learned today that the power supply that the previous crackhead owner plugged into the CD was in fact,t incorrect, so I ordered a new power supply, much to my chagrin. Please forgive me, I was a SNES/N64 kid growing up, I don't know about Genesis and it's blast processing or whatever.

Is it possible that I may have blown a fuse by trying to turn it on with the wrong power cable?

Also what's the best way to clean this thing up? The previous crackhead owner did a poor job of taking care of it. Air duster seems to be ineffective at the moment.

The ending is chopped, and you can just tell that the game doesn’t push the Genesis very much at all. Despite that statement, there is far less color bleeding in the Genesis version, and there’s more detail in the Battletoads themselves, such as their ram horns being gray instead of green or yellow in the NES game. I have to give the edge to the NES release here though, as it just pushes the system so far to its limits. >Yeah it's unfortunate how it runs worse than NES space harrier clones...
it really doesn't (no, really -- Space Harrier on NES and 3D World Runner flicker a bunch and have really tiny sprites)
most of the choppiness is from the tile-based movement and relative lack of zoom frames
it's fairly smooth all things considered, and the graphics are surprisingly comparable to the first game in the arcade (shame about the color palettes, but all the graphics are huge and pretty detailed and drawn at the same scale as in the original Space Harrier)

really, I'm willing to say it's a better game than the first Space Harrier in every aspect except graphics (which are close) and music (it's got this weird trumpet-y, bell-y soundtrack -- cool melodies though, especially the boss themes, which are all unique per stage)
it's got better levels, more aggressive enemies, better bosses, better level design (mixing up fast shots, slow shots, and environmental hazards in a way the original game doesn't really do)
desperately needed more rom space, and everything being locked to the 8x8 tile grid hurts it super badly because it makes it feel really choppy (and that one couldn't really be fixed)

it's a fair tradeoff for smoothness imo, and those aren't the smoothest games of its type on NES anyway

lots of similar games have more of X or Y than the original Space Harrier, I wouldn't call them better. then again the choppiness and general fugliness of SH2 are so off-putting that maybe I haven't given it a fair shake.

The Genesis has one of the best home console versions of Paperboy 2.

I was never really a fan of the SNES version, it has an obnoxious soundtrack and blobby under detailed graphics. The Genesis version looks better, sounds better and plays a little better IMO.

The Genesis also has a decent port of the original arcade game as well.

Their audio quality is highly variable compared to other consoles and is dependent on the components used. Comparing their motherboards:
>Model 1
VA0-2: Mostly good but headphone output is overamped and can badly distort some audio
VA3-6: Best models you can find.
VA7: Audio is bad all around on these, avoid.

Model 2 consoles usually have the same bad sound as the VA7 unless it's a late model with a smaller motherboard, so you might want to avoid these. You have the best chance of getting a good Genesis model if you get a Model 1 with the "HIGH DEFINITION GRAPHICS" line on the top, unlike the one in OP's image.

Man takes me back.

The classic cast looks much more like little animals that can roll into balls. NuSonic looks like someone who listens to Limp Bizkit, while the females like rogue who have large breasts and such are gross furry pandering.

Classic is charming and wholesome (all that attitude BS comes from marketing). NuSonic is a lanky smarmy tryhard that never shuts up with corny lingo that was outdated 20 years before he first spoke. Compare Shadow to Metal; Shadow is a cringey gun carrying edgelord who swears for no reason, has a human girlfriend who is murdered by the government, and he dies via firing squad. Metal meanwhile is just a cool robot.

Sonic 3 & Knuckles is the greatest platformer of all time.

You see, Sonic was never about speed, he was about pinball physics. Therefore Boost and adventure are not Sonic in 3D, they're gotta-go-fast simulators with a sonic skin, similar to how Mario 64 is not Classic Mario in 3D, it's a collectathon. Mario 3D World is classic mario in 3D. There needs to be a Mario 3D World for sonic. A 3D game that that plays like the 2D games simply with an added dimension. A game with pinball physics and momentum. A game with actual platforming instead of homing attack spam and boost.

Yeah, the final boss is kinda a pain to fight. I don't remember much about him, but I think I beat him on my 8th or 9th try. Which is surprising since every other boss was an odd memorizing game as well.

I still remember it, since a friend who doesn't really play much retro vidya sat down next to me and watched me finish it, and then just said "oh, that's it?" and I just said "it too me a week to finish this fucking game" since the fight was a close one.

>> No.4765367

it's really weird, the bosses get progressively easier as the game goes on

The first boss is really easy to fuck up on.
The second boss isn't too hard, but can be unpredictable.
The third boss is actually easy as shit, just a bit hard to hit.
The fourth boss is way too easy for a fucking wheel of fire (no really, why doesn't it kill you on contact? it's a fucking burning wheel), just line up with it and shoot, you can make it entirely unable to attack.

then the final boss comes and it's a slog
