I played a ton of this game so I'm good. Was one of my favorites for the N64 and still remains my favorite racing game.

>characters have different boost speeds and it's one of the most important stats because it's one of the few you can't improve
>no way to see it
All I know is Ben Quadrinaros has the best boost and Sebulba has one of the worst so obviously it isn't correlated with top speed.

The original 2000 release runs fine on Win10, it's only the installer that didn't work in 64bit OSes.

I used one of these for both games. It was great, especially for Rogue Squadron. Felt like I was really piloting an X-Wing. Playing it on a gamepad is just nowhere near as nice.

Can I properly play it on PC? Emulating the N64 version works pretty well so far and I heard the PC version had problems on Win7+.

post best times
this was on Aquilaris Classic

>> No.4757276

At first I got kinda bored because the game is surprisingly easy, much easier than I remember as a kid on the 64, so I tried to get as far as I could with no upgrades. But once I said "fuck it" and just started buying upgrades anyway, the sheer speed blew me away. Bombing through the Boonta Classic in a max top speed pod is fucking sublime. Now all that's left is the invitational heat with the infamous Abyss, which I don't remember at all. I'm pretty excited.

>> No.4757301

>>4757276
No-Upgrades kills the game imo, yeah the cpu actually gives a challenge but is so slow to play and the tracks are so long i just get bored, i think the best challenge would just be a No-Crash run (and to make it harder, if you crash, you actually die and have to restart the whole game).
But I'll stick with doing Time Trials is legit fun to do them.

It's pretty crazy how innovative the track design is. All of the alternate pathways that parallel and cross each other feel like a Sonic the Hedgehog level where you're trying to choose and stay on the most efficient path (not to mention how exciting it feels to see pods fly around you as they hop across paths). Abyss is the most obvious example - stay on the top road and you can skip a huge amount of the map in one long boostable straightaway; hop off at the right time and you can skip even more. It's weird that no one else seemed to take from this idea; the closest I can think is Burnout Paradise's open world track design.

It's so much fucking better. It looked good on the 64 but on pc it's peak late 90s accelerated 3d with all the colored lighting and blurry textures. Shit looks crisp.

Crazy how much better the original is than the sequel. Only thing I wish the original had is that autistic "advanced" mode where you can use 2 analogs to control the thrusters individually. Hopefully might be able to cook up a custom config to get something close.

>>4757590
True, I noticed that, but they're not particularly hard to leave behind.

Either way the sequel feels smaller with the lack of atmosphere, first game had the right idea having the 2 different part stores, the garage and the upgrade section. Even if they accomplished the same porpuse as the menu in the sequel, it made the game feel bigger.

I also like how the tracks are wider, they feel very open.

Knowing where to boost and where to cooldown is key for this game, also mixing braking, sliding and releasing the acceleration button helps a lot with turns that Quadinaros can't take during boost

Sliding feels weird at first, but the key is to slide way before you get to the turn, releasing the accel button also helps.
During boost I like to slide first, then start moving left or right depending on the direction.
I think practicing Mon Gazza Speedway with Quadinaros would be the best for practicing it, since you need to boost for like half the circuit during a turn.

I'm trying to do Mon Gazza, but I can't wrap my mind around it. Letting go of the accelerator drops the boost, and sliding alone doesn't seem to do much of anything. Not to mention trying to get a boost charged while also turning.

On the topic of stats, I think there's something off about acceleration. For example, The manual says that Ratts has the best acceleration in the game, and according to the debug stats I found on gamefaqs, it is. But when you're actually using him, or looking at the in game stats for acceleration, Ratts has the lowest acceleration in the game. Does anyone have some insight on this?
