It's one of the best games on the system and maybe the most technically advanced, too. The "worst game ever" idiots swallowed a meme just like the guys who think Mario Bros is a bad movie.

It was implicated in that industry crash due to poor business decisions (like producing more carts than there were console owners for some reason), but it had nothing to do with the quality of the game.

"One of the best games on the system" isn't really saying all that much though when the system is the 2600.

>> No.4733278

>>4733186

overperfect collision detection ruins it, most people got annoyed by falling into the pits over and over again, and since that reduces your life bar that rendered the game pretty much unwinnable for many people until they gave up. It is not a bad game, it sold well and without that annoyance surely a lot less of them would have been returned. If Atari had not completely removed all brakes regarding this cart's production (seriously guys, how about you start slowly with just two mil or so?) so those millions lead to a huge loss and the thing with the pits hadn't been there it would have been a success imho.

It has a coherent gameworld with a clear story and goal, two antagonists, items and several obstacles for challenge. I also like the score system tradeof that you can exchange the game's help getting one of the pieces for a better score, that leads to an interesting situation having to make the decision.
Having the player search several boring pits for randomly placed object is questionable but it still doesn't kill the game- if you don't always fall back in...

Regarding the timespan it was made in it is straight up amazing. The decision of having the player search several identical People how call it the WORST GAEM EVARR!1 likely have never played it, it gets a lot more enjoyable with the pit- issue corrected but is playable even without it as soon as you learned how to control ET to avoind falling back in.

>> No.4733317

>>4733258
I've never understood the Atari 2600 disrespect/beat down stuff, there were technical limitations back when it was created (1977) and they adapted to those limitations. For the time, it was pretty good.

On the ET side, nearly everybody I've talked to who's *actually* played it enjoyed it. I believe people just hop on the bandwagon that it's a bad game because it was overproduced and shit.

Yeah, I mean, you said it yourself. It's all relative. It was the best people had at the time and a lot of this shit was revolutionary.
But objectively, it's an extremely primitive system with a lot of extremely primitive games.

It's not disrespect; it's an important system and a really interesting case study. I plan on writing some software for it as a little side project one day. A lot of the games on 2600 that I like are ports mostly because they had to change a bunch of shit on for the 2600 version, so there's a reason to play it over the original.
Asteroids has wildly different asteroid movement. Battlezone is absurdly different with two tanks and no terrain, much more about movement and positioning (and it looks great) -- not sure if I like Robot Tank more, I kinda think there's a reason to play both. Space Invaders has co-op play.

I have two questions.

1) I always wanted to try Atari classics, but this console didn't arrive at my country (the very first were NES knockoffs) so I knew about Atari many years later, so this wasn't my childhood and I can't use nostalgia googles to enjoy the games because of the very dated graphics and controls. So my question is, are there remakes for the Atari classic games I can play? Throw everything you got at me.

2) For preservation and historic value, what is the best Atari Collection out there and for which console? I saw there are many but what if those mane you recommend the most?

well, neither can I

just try a user friendly game like demon attack

>what is the best Atari Collection out there
they all have a lot of great arcade games but don't usually have the best selection of 2600 games

Are you talking emulator wise, or vintage Atari?

I'm asking about the collection where I can play the most atari games with just buying one software.

You know, like the Taito Collection on PS2, Genesis Collection on PS3 or Capcom Classic Arcade Collection, etc

Maybe the most accurate emulation wise would be cool. But this is optional because I'm looking for the collection who have the most games.

I like Star Voyager. It's not the best by a long shot. It's way simple when compared to Star Master, but I like it.

If there's a collection of 2600 games that's decent I haven't seen it, even with the good ones Atari just doesn't have the rights to all the best games

GBC Yars Revenge has actual graphics, sort of, and seems pretty faithful although it's still not that clear what the hell you're supposed to be doing, and having to scroll the screen kinda kills it imo

Activision Anthology has a fairly complete selection of Activision's games, only leaving out the few licensed ones they did. It's by far the best collection to get. Atari's first person games generally weren't the best, and there's a lot of license issues keeping the better games away from the collections.

I would like to upgrade my Atari 800 XE from 64kB to 128kB, and I checked the two chips that are already on the pcb and they are TMS4464-10NL / IHE 9101. would adding two chips with the same TMS4464-10NL but a different IHE name work? like adding two that end with IHE 9001?
Also would I need to add more stuff? I found some info about someone modding another model and it said to add two capacitors on a certain place.
I also checked and it seems I have a FREDDIE chip, I don't know if that makes any difference?

What’s some “impressive” 2600 games? I’ve been curious about the capabilities of the console for a while now. I’m not necessarily asking for GOOD games mind you, just that they’re “impressive” in some technical way. The most complicated game I’ve played on 2600 is Dragon Stomper if you guys need a baseline for “impressive”.

Pitfall 2 is pretty much the 2600 pushed to its limits considering the background detail, the animations and theres no flickering at all. And the most important is theres music during the gameplay with 4 audio channels.
This was achieved using special chips on the cartridge, like Yoshi Island on the SNES.
Of course nowadays theres plenty of homebrews much more advanced if you ignore the 4k rom size limit.

Solaris, pitfall 2, montezuma's revenge, secret quest and jr pac man all provide gameplay experiences that are on par with a lot of NES games. They just aren't as impressive in the audio/graphics departments.

For the real time and weather effects definitely. I'd argue Battlezone is more impressive though, blows my mind how they managed to pull off the 3D environment. Dodge enemy fire to see what I'm talking about.
