So, how good is the Rail Chase 2 emulation on the latest version of MAME compared to the Model 2 emulator? My pc is very old and can barely run it at 10fps or even less than that to check it myself

Daytona USA
Virtua Fighter 2
Virtua Cop
Virtua Cop 2
Sega Rally Championship
Gun Blade NY
House of the Dead
Last Bronx
Sega Touring Car Championship
Dead or Alive
Fighting Vipers

Model 2 is loaded with racing, 3D fighting and light gun classics.

I love everything about the hardware. 60fps on everything, clean 3D textured mapped quadraltareal polygon graphics with texture correction and z-buffering.

There's a dedicated Model 2 emulator that works quite well. It's closed source and hasn't been updated in about 5 years, though. No shader support or anything like that.

Model 2 emulation in MAME is still pretty much preliminary.

Many Sega legends were born on it, including Daytona USA obviously. While it's hard to appreciate the games and the hardware if you never played it back in the day; that's when it stood out. At the time of release, the PlayStation nor the Saturn or even the N64 were released yet. The Model 2, along with the Model 3, were the last arcade system boards to be significantly more powerful over home consoles of the time.

Apart from the usuals like Daytona, Virtua Fighter 2, Sega Rally and others, my personal favorite is Fighting Vipers. It's basically a grab-bag of the 90s with the nice colors, character design and over the top mechanics. It's Virtua Fighter with a broken tachometer. Tons of secrets inside, and lots of goodies on the relatively amazing home port; while the graphics didn't compare obviously, the frame rate was still a solid 60FPS and the gameplay logic was pretty much identical, a great port.

Pic related is one of the infamous secrets; if you win 100 times as Honey, and her armor gets destroyed (you can intentionally destroy it by quickly pressing F, B, F, B, P+K+G), she loses her skirt, too. Somebody at AM2 had a huge infatuation with her for something like this to exist, and I can definitely sympathize with whoever it was; she's like total fetish incarnate for me. I wish I knew; whoever's idea it was needs to come out of the closet so he can get kudos for it.

This game was pretty serious business back in its day; big events and competitions for it, even a cosplay contest of sorts for Honey:

It's a just shame that it's forever lost to the arcades. The saturn version is one my favorites on the system but the arcade version, while not without it's own faults, is absolutely stunning and would have made a nice extra. Those fully 3D backgrounds where amazing.

But seriously. The model 2 version is a damn good fighting game. Maybe not Virtua Fighter 2 good, IMO. But still a really solid 32bit fighting game in its own right.

I think it really shows how impressive the model 2 really was. That's a game from 1996 running on hardware from 1993. Even the early Tekken's don't look near as good.

The saturn port is still really fun though. Can't say I was ever a huge fan of the PS1 version though. The extra characters and costumes are nice but the HUD is ugly and the backgrounds and music are worse and I can't really put my finger on it but the gameplay doesn't feel quite as good either. It's an okay game by all accounts I suppose it just doesn't really have that OOMF the saturn or arcade did.

The arcade game was released months after Sega's Virtua Fighter 3 on Model 3 hardware. dead or Alive wasn't the best looking arcade 3D fighter of that year. But for a Model 2 game, it still looks really good.

Model 2 was beast arcade hardware for 1993. It felt like it was a generation ahead of everything else. Seeing Daytona USA in 1994 in the arcades was mind blowing.

Model 2 aged really well for early 3D hardware.

>It's just a weird thing to do especially considering the Saturn version actually looks better still.

The Saturn has a good home port of the arcade game. Yeah the models are lower poly, and the 3D backgrounds are missing and replaced with 2D parallax scrolling backdrops. But it runs in the Saturn High resolution mode and at 60fps like Virtua Fighter 2.

The way the Playstation renders polygons is different from the Sega Saturn, so I guess they modeled them differently for the different hardware. But I wasn't a fan of the blander looking environments. Not a fan of the way the PS1 port looks either.

It wasn't a terrible Dreamcast port, to be honest. I think it had a few small issues, but it was a pretty accurate port, regardless.

I would love to see the proper Model 3 game get an official re-release though.

The Model 2 was brilliant. I loved the look of the games. A bit low-poly, but loads better than anything you had at home at the time, and it ran way smoother. Fairly hi-res textures. Hi-res (well, medium res) graphics. Amazing piece of kit.

kinda wish it supported gouraud shading, some of the later games do look a bit naff next to the immediate competition just because of that, although the Model 2 games still seemed to have better looking textures

>>4750336
Tekken was deliberately released on shit, low-budget PS1-in-a-cab hardware to undercut the expensive Model 2 releases like VF2. Tekken was never in the running for graphics.
really, Namco had seen how much it'd worked and largely abandoned their expensive System series of hardware in favor of PS1 variants

Fighters Megamix was like a grabbag of every single AM2 fighting game up to that point. The Virtua Fighter 2 cast has their Virtua Fighter 3 move sets as well as the dodge move.

The walled areas and armor breaking gameplay of Fighting Vipers is there as well.

The game features characters from Virtua Cop, Sonic the Fighters, Daytona, Virtua Fighter Kids version of VF2 characters, Rent-A-Hero and even one character that was cut from the original Virtua Fighter.

It's AM2 goodness, and one of the best 3D fighters on the Saturn.

The sidestep/dodge mechanic made Akira better than i thought it would. Janet(based on a new character for VF3 i didnt know at the time) and Hero were neat. Weird shit like Daytona Car, the meat and the Palmtree were hilarious fun

Portugal. Arcades were very small places with older owners who wanted to play by the rules and get easy cash without taking much shit. So that happened to me often until i gave up, but even the teenagers(around 16) if they got sighlty excited with games like talking loud or a bit noisy the owner at 2nd warning would tell them to leave, if didnt worked then he would plug off the machine. Obviously those places were killed fast since the owners acted like that.
The few arcade machines that survived were either on malls or fast food places with security that would tell you to leave because "your a minor, you cannot play, see that tag over, no fun allowed under 16"
Because of that it was very hard for me to play on the arcades as a kid. The few times i visited Spain and France never had that shit happen, even the few times i played slot machines they didnt cared.
