What is the point of this? Are the Australian versions of games different somehow?

>> No.4750008

Most likely censored. Australia tends to be more hardline about censoring than any other country in the world.

games weren't subject to censorship in this country until ~1994 when the film classification board, run by the govt, started to regulate games as well

>> No.4750786

They are occasionally superficially different to the regular PAL release because we don't require languages other than English.
I suppose for archival purposes that's enough to qualify as a separate release.

Two of those games I recognise are roms of piggy-back carts by the company HES so the Australian versions are actually significant.

Sidewinder is one of the few carts I still have left.

I don't think any of these games were released in Europe, making these the sole PAL release.

TMNT2 is the only one of those I recall getting a European release, and it was called Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles 2 here, so I assume the Australian release kept the "Ninja" name.

The Australian censorship policies contrast so heavily to the rowdy Australian stereotypes you come across that it's comical.

Seems like a good thread to ask. What are all the b, o or p versions supposed to be? There's others too. Just some modified roms?

>> No.4753160

>>4750006
The data is not exactly the same, hence the ROMs have different names. There may be no difference for people who simply want to play games in most cases.

>> No.4753167

>>4753126
b = bad dump
o = overdump
p = pirate

>> No.4753170

>>4753126
[b] stands for bad dump, [o] for overdump and [p] for pirate cart.

The purpose of the goodtools were to index all existing roms so you could use them to find out which version of a rom you had and replace crappy dumps with better ones, it's a relic from the era when there were tons of rom sites and tons of rom dumpers all over the internet and common carts got dumped a dozen times by people that may or may not know what they're doing.

[a] Alternate - [a] This is simply an alternate version of a ROM. Many games have been re-released to fix bugs or even to eliminate Game Genie codes (Yes, Nintendo hates that device).

[p] Pirate - Usually reskinned official titles

[b] Bad Dump Probably won't boot and even if it does, in game crashes are likely

[t] Trained - Means it has those gay ass technicolor menus on boot that often have cheats or something you can turn on

[f] "Fixed" - Modified ROM for janky emulators to be able to play a game "correctly"

[T-] OldTranslation

[T+] NewerTranslation

[h] Hack

(-) Unknown Year

[o] Overdump - ROM image where the person dumping did it wrong and there is more data (useless data) than is *actually* in the game wrong. Usually harmless, but technically not an accurate dump.

[!] Verified Good Dump

(M#) Multilanguage (# of Languages)

(###) Checksum - If you don't know what this is, ignore it and never boot it

(Unl) Unlicensed

Fairly interesting. And yea have some ancient goodset collection. Makes sense then.

>> No.4753209

>>4753193
Goodset collections are mostly just a result of rom sites missing the point entirely. The reason Goodtools recognize shitty dumps is so that you can realize you have a shitty dump, then delete it and go download a better replacement, not so that you can collect every shitty dump some retard made in order to have a "complete collection".

From this I am assuming that the Australian versions are uncensored PAL speed alterations to differenciate them from the supposedly modified (E) versions. Euros had to put up with Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles, we didn't. Makes sense to me at least.

Funny this is here. I had a real question about AUS hardware. Does an AUS memory card for PSX differ from the Americas version? I was looking at clear orange ones, and they seem to only be available from AUS, and I don't mind waiting.

"Overdumps" aren't exactly all "overdumped" ROMs. If you artificially expand a ROM and just fill it with random words and sentences, you could send it off to the NonGood section of ROMShepherd, and it'll be noted as an (o) if that Cowering pleb ever actually updates anything. (He's probably dead, and I don't care.) Many hacks are listed as (o) when that's the intended hack. Open a SMB (o) with a hex editor, on of them has some sentence about a lamppost or something.

Someone needs to fully take over that retard's shit. I like my hacks, but no one uploads anything except for pakkie.
