But I thought Leftenant Lenny said that people only dislike BD because it's too easy for them... :thinkingemojigrowsinsizeslowlyengulfingearth:

But yeah, Icarus seriously needs to get in the habit that when he plays a total conversion-like mods that adds new enemies, new levels and new gameplay mechanics he should PROBABLY start at easy, and only play easy after beating it on normal. I mean, remember when old games had these idosyncratic descriptions of their difficulty levels? Easy was almost never 'for stupid poop babies' but actually 'for beginning players'.

It was the same shit with Hideous Destructor and Doomed in Space, he would've enjoyed them a lot more if he first did an easy mode playthrough.

And I mean, it's not like we're just haters, guy gets PAID for this every month because Patreon. This is his part time job as what amount to a indie game journalist/critic, people have right to complain.

The big complaints I remember are people thinking the cyberdemon being stupidly easy, only taking seven rockets, and in new versions, only six shells from the SSG.
Hitscan whiners complained about hitscanners, but they complain about normal hitscanners anyway, they won't stop complaining until all ranged enemies are imps.

Generally, people determined that many of the easier enemies were made harder, which ok, that's alright (I personally like mods that do that), but then a lot of the enemies which are supposed to be harder, bosses, are made stupidly easy, thanks to things like stupid damage scaling and the headshot mechanic.
Overall, /vr/ considers Brutal Doom to have bad and illogical gameplay balance, not that it's excessively hard (because it actually isn't).

Icarus is bad at Doom. It's a well known fact, I occasionally cringe a bit when I watch his streams. He's also terrible at hitscanners - he doesn't even TRY to use cover (which is why he complains so much about using hitscanners in reviews for Project Einherjar and Operation Bodycount).

I just wish he acknowledged he was bad at it instead of calling every mod too hard. ESPECIALLY when he tries playing them at Ultra Violence for some reason.

Though to be fair Doom fandom culture might be a bit to blame, even here on /vr/ I keep seeing idiots who claim you should ONLY play Doom on Ultraviolence and everything else is for wusses, or that using saves - despite GAME MANUAL TELLING YOU TO DO THAT
- is cheating, and stuff like that. Icarus might simply be afraid of being called a scrub so he plays mods on higher difficulties than he should.

And there is also unfinished WIP Metal Gear mod, currently in alpha. Sadly, you can't actually sneak much in it (unless you pick VR Missions epside- most of them can actually be stealthed). Play with Ultimate Doom.

Yeah, it's not bad by fandom standards.

It's got flaws, but there isn't a single fandom in existence that doesn't have problems. We don't have shipping wars, or selfcest porn.

I just don't get this obsession with difficulty. Doom isn't exactly Kaizo Mario, Ninja Gaiden or Contra: Hard Corps.
Doom (also Doom 2, Doom 64 etc) is not a particularly difficult game, only TNT and Plutonia pose any real challenge to an experienced player - and even they are not THAT hard by standards of games from the 90s.
And of course it makes sense - there is no reason why the first popular FPS would be challenging if 90% of the audience never played an FPS before.

So why is Doom community so obsessed with difficulty if the games themselves aren't about difficulty?

Nowhere? I just stated what I thought of the doom fanbase and people got ruffled about it. I understand it's not pleasant to hear someone claim that the fanbase you're a part of isn't sunshines and rainbows but there's no need to act like that.
> what other type of argument did you expect would arise from a
making such a statement
Certainly not the extremely common excuse of "well what about other OTHER fanbases? this one doesn't look so bad now right?". Maybe they'd point me over to some kind of Doom haven I didn't know about where ZDoom and Doomworld forums shenanigans don't happen and also is the mayority of the fanbase, which I doubt exists.

No, that's not the issue.
Doom community isn't sunshine and rainbows, no community is.
But even as many autists and dumbasses as we have, if you genuinely think this community is "toxic" then you're a fucking virgin in the overall scheme of the gaming community.
You don't like being told that, and that's all right. Doesn't change that it's still correct.

well, major community sites obviously comprehend a major portion of the overall population, take the good with the bad and all.

and in all fairness, a very large portion of the drama isn't remotely related to the topic of game discussion. what IS notable is the amount of posts about other users and their thoughts and opinions on other things that, again, have nothing in relation to talking about the games themselves.

so in sum, yes, you would be right in some way as the doom community IS toxic, but ironically enough, none of the vitriol is related to actual doom discussion. so the drama complaints are legitimate in a way, but by that point anyone with two working brain hemispheres would make the resolution of making themselves busy with the portion of the community that also doesn't care about drama.

hell, there's even a sonic thread up right now >>/vg/213132579/

One is the GZDoom folders where I keep the gzdoom and main iwads; and then there's ZDL folder with the launcher, and all the mods.

Arcadia Demake.

Tried, derivative, self-indulgent mess that just screams something akin to "Us, _professional_ level-designers, right?" (the Romero analslurp at the end just seals the impression) with maybe some bits of "How far the level-design had come since then! Now levels can CONVEY MEANINGS TOO (like in Bioshock! which I helped to make!)!". A CASTEVIL-worthy loopy clusterfuck of "haventIalreadybeenhere?"-looking aquamarine passageways (muh stylization!) with every single fucking weapon being given like three times over, which makes the exploration utterly meaningless. Also, deadends with 2 armor shards, yes, VERY much worth the trouble. Also, ammo is given, like, COMPLETELY randomly.

Actually, no, comparing it CASTEVIL would just be unfair in regards to CASTEVIL. Being a comparable mess layout-wise, CASTEVIL at least has some fiendish combat setups. This one is much too engaged in masturbation and "muh suspenseful atmosphere" for that. I would rather compare it to Sarge's level-designing brainfarts and maybe with DOPA for Quake.

Anyway, it receiving a Cacowad. Well, fuck, suit yourself.

Despite this looking like an incoherent twitter mess, after playing the level I can agree with it. The level is a samey, empty, overly artsy clusterfuck that would be a better deathmatch map than an actual single player level. See, the thing is that in old FPS, taking cover was ABOUT mobility.
In games like Gears, 'taking cover' involves holding a button to get to cover, and then while in cover periodically holding a button to get out of it.
In older games like Call of Duty, cover was more involved as you had to manually position yourself into cover, and then peak out using the lean key.

But in games like Doom or Duke or Wolf... You actually have to physically run into and out of cover every time. It's pretty different from how it works now.

What about a dark forces mod where you *don't* play as doomguy becuase that's retarded.

A dark forces mod that has a section inside the death star would be fine, you probably wouldn't want to have the whole mod in the death star would be a bit bland, ideally you want to have an interesting new setting in each new map like in the original DF.

I play gameplay mods all the time. I mainly play Doom for the mods, and I love blood and gore in games. I just feel BD goes way too excessive with it. Doom mods I'd say do blood/gore well are Beautiful Doom, Demonsteele, Smooth Doom (barely any gore but still notable), Doomzone, Droplets (addon mod), Gmota, Netronian Chaos, Dead Marine (and it's "Even Deader" fan addon). As for non-doom stuff that I think does gore well? F.E.A.R (even if being able to decap with a 9mm pistol and gib with a shotgun is silly), Blood, Max Payne 3, Day of Infamy (even if it's just basic dismemberment), The Darkness 1/2, Dying Light, the list goes on. It's possible to do great blood/gore effects without going completely over the top with it. Though, I don't know why I'm telling this to someone that couldn't be more obviously samefagging.

So I've been playing PSX Doom TC and other than the downgrade to levels/enemyplacement it honestly seems like much better version, especially with the Doom 64-style music and lighting.

Is there any mod for regular Doom and Doom 2 that actually gives them the PSX version's lighting and music? Since that's what I'd find ideal.

It's interesting that a lot of older FPS's have history with modding, because it's also the kind of games that had a variety of cool protagonists compared to most modern titles in the genre, so when we'll never see some sort of crossover potential getting realized, we get people making cool shit like Samsara and so on.
I also think FPS has one of the best collection of men in video games, as it's the case with girls in fighting games

How did anybody even reach that conclusion?
He's an ordinary human male who was just really good at his job which was killing shit up, then he did it to such an insane level that he just kept on doing it forever and ever (which makes many WADs canon) and then plot happens and he got that outfit and then more stuff happens and the game starts.

I think part of the complaints of Doom 2016 is the arenas are pretty common, we have them now and then in our own doom maps but yes there were levels in Doom 2016 where it was just arena after arena and that could get a bit grating.

Foundry (the most common favourite level) was good in that you had non linear exploration combat like normal Doom, but then arenas mixed in with that.

Except Brutal mods don't just add gore. Brutal Doom or Brutal Wolfenstein in addition to adding gore and violence, also change damage balance (usually player can deal more damage but is more fragile), make enemies more agressive, slow down the gameplay by pushing player into cover more - and adding "aiming down sights" feature to fit with the slower gameplay.

If all Brutal Doom did was add gore, then there would be no reason why Ketchup - a completely separate spinoff from Brutal Doom - exists, right?

Besides, these games are DESIGNED for having excessive gore in them. For starters, most of the environments in them are boring gray 'realistic' concrete corridors and you don't lose anything if they're covered in blood. Doom maps on the other hand are generally trying to look very pretty with detailed and carefully picked textures - and all of that is lost if everything is uniform red.

Imagine adding excessive gore to e.g. Chex Quest, Super Noah's Ark 3D, Adventures of Square or Rise of the Wool Ball.
Atmosphere would be absolutely ruined by gore, wouldn't it?

You know, this gives me an idea. Gore mod could work... IF it tinted the textures red, but was otherwise transparent and you could still see the texturework beneath. This way, all the fine work of a mapper wouldn't go to waste.

Plus, it's more 'realistic' if you care about that - real blood is a thin liquid that gets transparent in thin layers (puddles?) and not a thick opaque goop.

.https://imgur.com/a/ybXXh8d. - is what I have in mind (note that blood texels are meant to be accurate to grid of texels of the texture underneath the blood)

Not really, Ultimate Doom is generally hallway-arena-hallway-arena. There is still a lot of larger arenas where you have to defend yourself against a monster closet, and a lot of spaces that kind of breach the line between 'hallway' and 'arena' (consider e.g. the "donut" acid walkway in E1M3 Toxin Refinery). >The Arcane Rifle now deals more damage- no longer does it deal merely pinpricks.
>The Pistol was sped up, and made more accurate. It's still quite powerful.
>The Armor spell was removed, and Nova, Decoy, and Timestop were put in its place.
>Scrolls now convert themselves into mana orbs if you already have the spell in question.
>Made the SSG Elite much less common, and turned his reload sounds much louder so you can hear it more easily.

Not excessively, there's hallways, but they're mostly wide and lead to all kinds of closed off and open areas, secrets hidden throughout, also sometimes looping or going in stranger paths.

I like the idea of the Arcanist able to generate mana, but seeing as it's bound to an altfire for his fist, maybe it should go a little faster and have some sorta risk to it if you hold it too long, like some kinda mana burn? Cus right now it encourages a guy to just hold altfire to slowly recharge whenever they're not in combat

The warmage's fist having lifesteal is pretty dope, but aren't you worried about his slower movespeed making certain maps unbeatable?

I honestly figure that having the arcanist's mana generation attached to his fist is more of a penalty than anything. And if I bring in mana burn- like maybe the arcanist takes damage now and then- that won't change anything, because there's a healing spell (Then again, that is predicated on the player actually getting the healing spell, which is a 1-in-7 every time you find a chainsaw). I'm still tweaking the rate of regeneration, though. Not sure if it should be faster or slower, because the former would be overpowered, and the latter would just make things drag on more.

For the warmage, however, I'm thinking I might have his movespeed normal, but slow down his strafespeed a great deal, making it harder to dodge things in combat.

Just a little bit faster but maybe you can only charge to a certain threshold of mana then? Also you should try using Daedolon's idle frames for the arc of death for charging up mana seeing as that conveys more of a "I'm focusing and charging my shit" idea more than the frost shard attack frame.

That might work for the warmage, I'm only asking this because I was about to do the same for a character I had planned: giving him a slower movespeed, but then I realized that could buttfuck him with certain maps. I'd hate to see anyone else have to deal with that headache

It's kinda bullshit your mod doesn't get much love.

Change the renderer to Software mode, then in the .ini file turn off Truecolor. And turn off all the Dynamic Lights too, even though the new version 3.25 will give you DL even in software mode with truecolor turned off, it is still a performance hit.

Cover is important in a battle but when you up the ante enough even cover wont save your ass, and even modern games have very poorly mixed things up by having the cover itself be unpredictable in certain situations to demand creative thinking on the part of the player.
> Quake 2 railgun could bypass up to 64 units of map structure but this rarely ever mattered

At least in Half Life if you threw a satchel charge around a corner and blew it up you still took damage. I dont know how much but im thinking you still took 25% if it could reach you
within the radius via noclipping. Ive dropped packages off then went up an elevator, blew it up and still got hort.

I dunno, after the transition to hell I got killed a few times and stopped playing when you get to that first arena.

I mean its like a classic pistol start... but they really do not give you any appreciable ammo in that area and you have to take on an HK and a bunch of smaller enemies. Only way I could see beating that arena is using almost all of the bullets on the HK then having to punch the imps to death, which is a problem because you have to shoot some of the imps just to get more ammo.

> mfw I had just beaten the 2 HKs in the teleporter room while conserving all 4 of my BFG shots the whole time since I got the thing, used plasma and rockets on the HKS
> oh sorry now you lose your weapons, including those 4 BFG shots you could have used but so studiously saved for even worse situations than this

Does ID even into fun since the 90s?
> seriously, even in RTCW the grenades were pieces of shit with almost no blast radius when IRL they in fact can be thrown farther than a normal grenade and hitler had the fragmentation problem corrected almost immediately.

It's blatantly amateurish (in a bad way, incompetent AND banal/shit/boring) in its most fundamental gameplay-related aspects, all the while being """"professional"""" (meaning, in this case, pretentious and wannabe-sophisticated) in utterly superfluous. This isn't a result of someone's self-expression, this is the result of someone's desperate attempt to pass for "being just like all of you, guys" (not meaning either this thread's posters or even Doom wad community), to fit someone's pretty nonsensical standards. It's "by the numbers", it's arguably by all the wrong numbers, and it is moreover arguably not that amazing even about being by those, arguably wrong, numbers.

I had a solid wall between me and the satchel there was no doubt about this. Clicked boom on it and took a bunch of damage. Later on died because I was nearly wasted.

Tried this same thing again except the marines were dead and wanted to see if being in the elevator going up would prevent the damage. The satchel was tossed into the hallway. I got in the elevator and went up. There was not a direct line of sight between the character and the satchel because of the edge of the cieling for the entry. Still took damage but it wasnt much.

Agreed but even worse was every weapon using its own ammunition without any need to conserve ammo between different weapons.

The BFG used its own ammo so you didnt have to give a shit about just going hog wild with the plasma gun. Which also had way too much fucking ammunition because of how many plasma canisters you were given you could probably just walk through the game after that point using only plasma.

The chaingun should have used pistol ammo since it caused 14 points per hit, would have made sense to make use of that pistol ammo and cut down on how much munitions the player has at their disposal.

And they should've taken a page out of their own playbook from Quake 1 and had the Rocket Launcher and Grenade Launcher use the same ammunition. Even if the RL was superior overall you shouldnt be able to blast away with the RL then still have a bunch of fking grenades also sitting around that you can start tossing without giving a shit too.

And yeah the Shotgun was usually sitting at Max Ammo because it was so useless. Not wanting to switch weapons to it and waste time id probably just plug whatever was up in my face using the Machinegun or Plasma Gun.

poor ammo distribution plus wind up times and it only does 14 damage per shot

Plasma gun had reloads (50 capacity) but the ammo grew on trees. I forget if you get the plasma gun first but if you dont its only just right after the chaingun when you get in those labs.

For the chaingun to have been relevant at all it would've had to show up just after the Machinegun, and only drop the standard fare of ammo at first so that it could be a viable alternative to using Hand Grenades.

Archie Sonic had basically every character ever play a role, usually getting their own arcs and shit. It also had a ton of OCs, though, especially in the Dark Ages.
I'm honestly sad that the new IDW Sonic seems more focused on making its own OCs than bringing back underutilized game character.

I would put maps 32, 23, 24, 26, 28, and 30 at the top for difficulty in no particular order. Why does Doom 3 get shit on so much? The only thing that annoyed me was how enemies behaved on higher difficulties, but you go down to Marine instead of Veteran and the game is a lot more balanced. Doom 3 prioritized muh graphix and muh tech over everything else, to the point they could only have a few enemies onscreen at once to not rape the GPUs available at the time, also it was a massive departure from Doom 1/2 with the "darkness and even more darkness with jumpscare monster closets" gameplay style. And of course nowdays it looks like shit, much like almost any graphics that ride purely on current cutting edge fidelity. What I love about this claim is that its one of those "Brutal Doom lets you aim up and down!" Like yeah, it technically does, but it's nothing special, and most of that can be attributed to GZDoom being a good engine.

I have a 10 year old dusty laptop and I can play practically any GZDooom mod. The only ones with problems are the ones with special bells and whistles like Solace Dreams (because GZDoom can't voxels well), Wolfendoom: Blade of Agony, and Hunter's Moon (probably because of using a ton of Doom 3 models in horde-like quantities). Pretty much everything else runs just fine.

I just played through it recently for the first time as well.
It's honestly a decent game if you just take it for what it is, but the game completely took away everything that made doom what it was - it's only connected to the previous 2 in a narrative sense.

I went in expecting something similar, and was immediately put off by the slow, gameplay-less introduction level(s?). The weapons feel awkward and ineffective, and after I got instagibbed by a crate falling from the ceiling I closed the game and forgot about it for like half a year.

Having played through it now, I should say I was at least partially wrong in my first impression; the game definitely gets better as you get into it, but it never brings me the same feeling the original games did (which I actually also only just played through like a year ago). I have to say I was actually very surprised by the visuals in 3, the artstyle is solid and it really holds up, even today, in my opinion.

The combat just doesn't feel right. the shotgun feels just like that in every modern shooter (so like garbage) and the sub-mediocre sound design doesn't help either. (none of the guns ''pop'' like they do in doom 1 and 2, it's all crackle and fizzle, very unsatisfying, but i guess fitting for the weapons at least) The only exception being the plasma gun, which I found to be quite enjoyable.

All the new enemy types are garbage too. there's like 4 ''small piece of shit whose sole purpose is to inflict aimpunch and/or cause you to hit yourself with a rocket'' enemies, where I thought doom's single ''lost soul'' enemy filled that role more than it every already needed to.
Asides that, what do we get? the teleporting little PoSs which inflicted exactly 0 damage to me throughout the entire game?

Also I hate the grenades, they're like half life's except with 1000% more bouncing. I get that they shouldn't fill the same role as the rocket launcher but this 3-feet range just makes it worthless. (I'm out of characters)

Hack indie developers that grew up in the 80s and failed to recapture the magic of those games are long gone, now we have hack indie developers that grew up in the early 90s and are failing to recapture the magic of those games.
In 5 years, expect a ton of hack indie games trying badly to emulate N64/PS1 graphics.

Oh my fucking god, those are the people who ripped off Hotline Miami and called it "Bloodbath Kavkaz".
Pic related, that's the level of 'polish' you can expect from them.
https://store.steampowered.com/app/348020/Bloodbath_Kavkaz/
(positive reviews only because they delete negative ones)

So I think we can safely say that after Dusk and Ion Maiden they decided to cash in on the retro fps trend, and their research consisted of looking at Wolf3D screenshots while wasted.

Yep, on Steam devs can delete reviews as 'abusive'. Shit-tier devs use this as a way to artificially improve their ratings of their shit games, hoping someone will buy them by accident.

Which pretty much means that Steam ratings are fucking useless.

It's a shitty as fuck notebook "made" (assembled) in argentina, has an amd c-60 apu and 2 gb

this wasn't built to be used with windows 10

(low fps must be something with gzdoom opengl version, quake runs smooth like a baby's ass)
