At first I was a Capcom fanboy.
Then I got into SNK and Arc System and lost the reason to defend each separately.

No matter what you choose you always win.
To this day my favorite fighters are 3rd Strike, AC+ R (and Revelator) and Real Bout 2.

They were both great. Just Capcom seemed to have the slightly better devs. Yoshiki Okamoto, Akiman, Akira Nishitani, Noritaka Funamizu etc etc. They fucking ruled the industry back then.

Snk made a lot of fighters and all of them look super cool and stylized but in a lot of their games it feels like they were never meant for competitive play, and very little effort was put into balancing, it is good that they made a lot of fighting games without caring about competitive nature and made just-for-fun fighters but on the core balance is quite necessary and the players stay with them. But I gotta give it to them for the fun factor, I always prefer playing snk games with friends and neighbors even tho the fighter I have played the most is street fighter 3, from lime light if I show best looking snk and capcom fighters to someone no doubt he will pick garou instead of alpha/3rd strike

as much as i like capcom, i would have to give it to snk just because of kof, AOF, fatal fury e.g. capcom did get better when 3s and alpha 3 hit the scene as much as sf2 was great it got a little stale after the 4th sf2 game as much as super was great as a game it just got a little bland imo.

SNK has more developed characters that are more interesting and visually appealing imo. Overall their games are just more interesting, and the stories are actually kind of cool.

Capcom's games have better mechanics and graphics usually. But they are both really close, in the early 90s I would say SNK was ahead for a while.

as someone that loves characters, storyline and atmosphere, SNK will always be my fave, though I acknowledge Capcom makes better games, usually.

Each game plays differently in some way beyond balance, with a few exceptions. You also get new art, music, and characters.
plus, Capcom had semi-normalized it (1991 WW, 1992 CE, 1993 HF, later in 1993 SSF2, and then 1994 SSF2T) -- each of those games plays pretty differently too, but they've got less changes than KOF releases

but yeah, they're fairly different games apart from 97->98 and 94->95, both of which are largely just balance fixes in terms of overall mechanics
the rest clearly feel like major updates than just revisions to the preceding game
