I've heard that kanji is too big to fit in older games. If that's the case, would knowledge of hiragana/katakana be all you need to be able to play stuff like famicom games?

That was the reasoning for some games using all-kana text, but not all cases. If there was very little text in the ROM, the developers might use scant bits of kanji. In some cases, compression allowed for liberal use of kanji.

Knowledge of kana will suffice for reading text in many retro games, but there's much more to deciphering the text than simply understanding how to pronounce it. Obviously, you have to develop a strong grasp of Japanese grammar and syntax, and memorize a fair bit of vocabulary. Given Japanese isn't even remotely similar to European languages on any level, this can be a daunting task. Plus you have to consider that memorizing kanji isn't going to seem like that big of a deal if you're already putting forth the effort to memorize an entire vocabulary anyway.

To clarify: the NES video ram had space for 256 tiles (a little less, actually). Each letter would be 1 tile. Since both sets of kana go a little over 42 tiles, the rest is used by graphics and onscreen stuff. They didn't use kanji, except for stuff like title screen or chapter titles, because not all kanji could be left in the little video memory they had. What they usually did was use a few kanji that was extensively used through the game (example, Hikari = light).

The very few games that actually used kanjis in the NES, used a programming trick to swap the characters in and out from memory in real-time. I mean "trick" because they need to be changed according to the situation - IIRC, Gideon Zhi said the SMT NES games had all sorts of hard-coded stuff, instead of clear-cut command codes.

Just FYI,
Hard-coded: someone coded the values by hand in every instance
Command code: sorta like a formatting code, like bold, italic, underscript and so on.

That was the norm back in the NES/SNES era. One of the few SNES games that extensively used kanji was Tokimeki Memorial. And it had who knows how many layers of compression already.

Even games made for learners, like Pokémon, still used just a few kanji that were very common in the game. Kana-only games are stuff from NES games, because of limitations.

For example: Super Mario RPG used two kanji a lot throughly the game: Princess and Castle.

Im not sure this is the place but there are literally no other places that would find this usefull.

There is a game call little girl mill of ginko or mill for short. Its a south korean game and somebody actually made a playable translation. Its 2d, the gp32 cant do 3d and is mostly used as an emulation handheld for retro games. There is literally nothing next gen or new about this thing. There were about 30 games released on smc cards... if you have a gp32 and didnt know now you do or if you are a collector looking for something obscure to collect for, this might be the handheld for you, good luck finding much though.
