Talk to me about the Ridge Racer games. Which one is your favorite? What's the best way to play them today?

>> No.4730592

Ridge Racer R4 if you are an /o/ fag

R4 is the only racing game I like, period. I don't even know why. Favorite track is the one where you go through the tunnel at the end, at night.

I've played one of the older RR games, but I couldn't tell you which one. It's been a really long time. Couldn't get into it.

Ridge Racer Revolution. Mostly for the amazing soundtrack. Love the track called "Grip" in particular.

Actually managed to beat the White Angel car back in the day by making it bump into the back of my car the entire race.

Even as a kid, I thought Ridge Racer 1 on Playstation was a huge rip off. It's fine as an arcade game that you spend 50 cents on, but $50 for one track is garbage.

Can't go wrong with Ridge Racer Type-4. It was quite a technical feat at the time as the game manages to run at a constant 60fps and doesn't have any issues that were common to other racers like pop-up structures. The release also included a second disc with a retooled version of the original Ridge Racer that now runs at 60fps.

Favourite is RRT4 just because of awesome music, physics, track design, artstyle and visuals.
That said previous RR games also worth playing, especially because of vaporware aesthetics and soundtrack which always been amazing.

Best way to play them is obviously on emulator because of hi resolution, perspective correction and in case of first RR and Rage Racer because you can bind your analog pad to a negcon plugin output and get analog steering that way and if you want to bother with settings a bit, you can get a pretty responsive wheel control which makes it even more interesting and suitable for relaxing drift sessions.

Then there is RR2 for psp.
>Pic related
Which includes music and tracks from RRT4 as well but since car choice is poor, despite better visuals its a notch bellow RRT4 IMO.
RRT4 had an enormous amount of car designs comparing to other RR and you were sure to find something suitable for you.

RRT4 had some really awful car winning system where you actually had to lose to win all 300 cars or so but since emulation is a thing, you can cheat without physically owning a Gameshark and get all 300 cars right of the bat.
Its incredible how many designs there were and I never got to see them because I won every single race and had no idea you had to lose to unlock more cars.

It is bloated since some cars are repeating but, nevertheless, its cool to see bootlegs of Chaparral 2J or freaks like Pac man, Utopia and Vulcano and still, there is a version of various supercars with really cool colour scheme which makes RRT4 car selection the best of all RR games IMO.

What? I'm referring to technical findings about how the port was created. The developers grafted R1 onto R4's engine to achieve a better framerate. It stands to reason that R4 itself would also run at 60fps, unless the framerate gets underclocked due to R4 enabling special effects not active in the R1 port.

>> No.4731429

>>4731391
>special effects

Exactly, R4's got realtime lighting and specular effects on the cars, higher polycount environments with higher draw distance and what looks like static vertex lighting, all sorts of stuff. Not getting that on PS1 at 60 frames. Load it up in an emu, it's a smooth 30, but definitely 30.

Favorite is R4: Ridge Racer Type 4. It is just that feeling of nighttime driving to an amazing soundtrack. The glow of the lights, late night, smooth gorgeous visuals, the style, all with the JogCon in your hands gave it a very chill vibe. Sure it is easier to accommodate for JogCon controls, but still a pleasure to play. The music is probably one of my favorites for video game soundtracks too. The best way to play it may be emulation now, so you can have it at a higher resolution, with perspective corrected color maps/textures, and no more polygon seams.

I tend to like any Ridge Racer game with Nagase Reiko in it.

This; R4 was literally sandbagging: the racing game especially if you want to collect all the non-special cars. Given that most of those are basically tuned-up versions of Stage 1 and 2 cars, the chore repeatedly doing and jobbing in the Grand Prix isn't worth it.

My favorite RR is a tie between R4 and RR64.

64 has a lot more courses and gets quite challenging towards the end. It's also more open ended, in that it lets you switch cars whenever the fuck you want between races. Unlocking new cars was also more fun, because you had to race them and win.
Only complaint about it is how frustratingly hard it can be towards the very end.

R4 lacks a lot of the content of 64, but it's sheer perfection in every other way. The only complaint I legitimately have about it is the lack of modes. No "arcade" mode, no challenge modes, not even "quick race", just grand prix and time attack.
It is one of the best racing games ever made though, so I just accept that achievment as a trade off for the lack of content.
I will say, though, that replaying the game with different teams and car types, trying out ways to get different cars and upgrades based on your standing in the grand prix was pretty neat. And there's a metric fuck ton of cars in it too.
R4's real strengths were the gameplay, soundtrack, graphics and controls. everything about it was awesome and just spot on.

I honestly feel that the two games are companion pieces, and if you don't have both, you're missing out. Rather like the consoles they're on, but that's another topic entirely...

Ridge Racer Revolution is the most fun overall for me. It's my go-to game when I've got a few spare minutes and just want to enjoy myself.
but then Rage Racer has the coolest courses in the series (shame about the handling, drifts actually make no sense in this game), and it's got an amazing soundtrack. Lightning Luge is just straight up pure, classic jungle techno. I love the Greek coast setting and the cloudy-skies aesthetic. Blasting around Extreme Oval and dodging the other cars with Hurricane Hub playing in the background is one of the best feelings ever.

R4 is okay. Cool graphics, amazing soundtrack, 8 courses, but I just don't like how it handles. It doesn't really make me want to replay it like RRR and Rage.
RR1 handles kinda odd and I don't like the courses as much and other than the one "Ridge Racer" song, the music is just worse versions of RRR/RR2's soundtrack.
