I enjoy looking at early Super Mario Bros artwork.
Specifically Super Mario Bros 1-3 and Super Mario World.
It gives me that fuzzy retro feeling.
What are some good guides, art books, etc. that feature early official artwork?
I already purchased that Nintendo Power Super Mario Bros 3 guide. It has some good drawings inside.

Go to the Mario Wiki, look at any game or character, and then go to the gallery. You'll find what is most likely the highest quality images of each game and character that is available online.

Seriously, if whatever you are looking for isn't there, it's probably not available in decent quality.

>> No.4720642

Mario Encyclopedia is coming out in the US later this year, it's sure to have a lot of old and new artwork in pretty good quality.

There's a lot of stuff that isn't on the wikis.

For starters, you got the awesome work scanbro did with the APE SMW guides, lots of good art in there

This WAS shit art by their standards back then, but they kept it for time constraints probably. They got Yoichi Kotabe (sort of the fifth Beatle of the Studio Ghibli crowd) to take it from there and do the spot pieces and whatnot, and he eventually would do most of the best known Mario art.

Blake Harris, the author of Console Wars found this a few years ago and scanned it. Grab some popcorn OP because you my friend are in for a treat. Everything you could ever want to know and more about Mario is in here. From his favorite music being new-wave, high-techno Euro pop, to the fact Mario's destiny was established from the moment he fixed a friend's squirt gun, to Yoshi's full name.

My bedroom was a Nintendo shrine back in 1987-88 (after that it gradually became a TMNT temple) and it had that art. It's still my favorite even if its kind of wonky.

I love that sticker album!
And yeah, it's hit or miss because those "miss" ones aren't really official art by Miyamoto or one of the NoJ guys, it's most likely done by someone maybe not even at NoA, but at Merlin (the company that did these sticker collections). For example that Koopa there looks all sort of bogus, it's probably traced from the pixelated version in the SMB game manual.
That Luigi also looks wacky.
But for example that Bowser is original japanese art and it looks great, that's also one of the few (or maybe only) full body picture of him wearing the purple cape and shoulder pads.

Why did they do away with the cape, it looks so good. You could argue it's so you could see his spiky shell, but honestly, Bowser covering his shell up with the cape and then tossing the cape aside right before battle would have been great for building tension ( not that it would have come into play until like, seventh gen consoles ).

I miss when characters were allowed to appear slightly off model and in different art styles on merchandise.

These days they won't even allow characters expressions to deviate too far from their default neutral expression on their stock 3D models. Have you seen that abomination of a Luigi's Mansion remake where they removed the squash and stretch? I hate everything about the way Nintendo animates their characters.

I feel like there was at least a little bit of freedom in depicting the characters up until the gamecube era though. It was really the Wii era and onward where everyone had to be painfully on-model at all times. They're even remaking games like Luigi's Mansion and the Mario & Luigi games, where super exaggerated facial animations was a focal point, and removing them.
