i personally love it but i acknowledge that it is old and probably not to the tastes of the modern generation of doomers, e.g. there are a number of maps that are elongated and confusing switch hunts that require patience, but it is a mix, there are also a few levels that would appeal to plutonia fans in there too. also the modern audience tends to find it insufficiently visually impressive too, its around the same prettiness level as some of doom2 or tnt.

Not bad, played it with a mod, that archvile really gave me the dick but in vanilla I'd have probably handled him easily. There's one issue, it's hard to get into the flesh tunnel secret due to ceiling height, maybe raise it a tiny bit. Decent use of the baron to make the player run down stairs, but you should probably put a larger ambush and maybe a rocket launcher behind it to take the baron out quickly.

Played it on HMP, my thoughts are:

The arch-vile trap is a nasty surprise right of the bat, I grabbed that Berserk secret so I could make it, but it was really intense. Assuming I hadn't figured that secret, I would be up for a real unfun fight. The secret to the shower room was interesting, I really needed that armor.

The cacodemon above the door is pretty clever, I haven't seen that done before (though I've read something like it), that REALLY caught me off guard and made me back off in panic. Some may argue it's an unfair trap but you hear him immediately as you start shooting the zombies, and he drops right down into your face, you have plenty of time to move. Great way to surprise the player IMO.
The fleshy secret leading to the courtyard was pretty interesting, it made the fleshy corner less of a random detail and actually made it a feature point.

The Baron coming out of the closet to try to scratch me in the ass is a good surprise, but it's also not a great use of a baron, as you only get a shotgun and chaingun, he could be berserk punched but that's too dangerous of a strategy IMO, they just violate you in melee. Whittling down a baron with just the shotgun is not fun for me, many would agree. Arguably you could make the case to just run down the stairs without fighting him, but he might follow, and then you have a real dangerous monster waiting for you up there still.
I would have put a pinkie or spectre in there, something you might realistically fight with berserk or just the shotgun. It's the second time a tiny closet is sprung to let loose a real mean monster though, I'd advise against getting too reliant on that. Ambushing the player can be fun, but it shouldn't be too predictable in it's setup.

By now, I was REALLY wired and expecting the next trap, the shotgunners were a piece of cake, and the dark storage room had me nervous, but it just had a few imps, and more shotgun shells than I could carry.

I'd say that I like the mean streak of surprising the player, but it could be done better for the third time. I'll give the archie surprise a pass because I had no such expectations, and I really liked the caco above the doorframe, very good, really scares the player while giving a chance to retreat easily, so it's not like an automatic injury.'

There's decent detailing overall, yet texture choice is a bit plain for a lot of it. I'd put in some added details, maybe a some sector furniture, a central mainframe or something, a carpet in the main room, etc. Maybe also some indents/holes in some walls for some computer screens, wiring or pipes.
Though the .midi wasn't my taste, I appreciate that you put it in, because I loathe D_RUNNIN, I would also have swapped the sky texture out, helps it feel less like Master Levels. Minor detail for spergs like me.

It's a very short map, but it has some interesting points going for it. Nothing mindblowing, but you've got some ideas I like. Short maps like these I feel work best in a set, meaning I'd suggest either making a longer map next time, or to add on a couple of more maps for a quick adventure.

Here's my full run of the map. It would actually have been easier if you could get the archviles to noclip out and then kill them one at a time before starting the map proper, but however those cages were made, I couldn't shoot through them even with the Liberator. Playing through Doom II for the first time in a few years, and for some reason, it’s just now resonating with me how many stages have massive areas that are completely unnecessary to explore.

Tricks n Traps, The Chasm, Gotcha, the Pit, Nirvana, Monster Condo, Downtown, Industrial Zone. . . They’re all pretty short stages if you just hone in on the keys and the exit, even though they’re big maps.

There’s not really anything like that in the first game. What’s up with that design choice?

Mapping is arguably easier to do outright since you can change direction mid-way through and not suffer as much. To make a good gameplay mod you should have a very good plan. Sure, there are some mods that weren't made like that, but very few turned out well. As for getting resources, there's plenty of mostly freely available crap out there. If the creator is a dickhead though (one of those "U HAV 2 ASK FOR PERMISHUN" people) you should steer clear if the mod is for public release. It's not worth getting into it with forumites on the spectrum over the legality and ethics over their claims to random resources for a 24 year old game.

The Heavy Assault Rifle feels so fun for a weaker weapon due to it's accuracy and having a better sense of impact, punch, and looks really nice intimidating appearance wise as most low tier automatic weapons go in retro FPS games.

I will try to keep all of that in mind, Thank you for the advice. This other map was actually made before this, but you can see I am kind of experimenting of a "Space Hulk" kind of situation. General story is that the player, (or a squad of marines) are teleported to a drifting military freighter.
I think this will probably just fall into obscurity as did my TF2/Gang Garrison mod ideas (which I don't hald any real interest of doing), but I just really want to make something for this community, and I need to learn it doesn't have to be great.

The Legacy of Heroes (legher.wad) map 5 doesn't play well with GZDoom built from commit 80f57dfaf0716c48e85984690657396255e44a40. Rendering will stop for few seconds after opening the door at the start. Zandorum/PrBoom+ with OpenGL enabled shows no issues here.

if I could mod the doom 4/D4T chaingun I'd make the rotator and the tactical scope both built-in features. the only difference would be that the scope would become this hugeass sniper sight a la laserkraftwerk that has the same capabilities as the one for the HAR, both upgradeable. for mods I would repurpose the micro rockets (6 rockets=6 barrels fired) and keep the mobile turret as is.

essentially mount everything from the HAR to the chaingun to make it a more versatile and viable gun in your roster. would I be creeping it in too much or is it a good idea?

Cant add much that hasn't been said already.
You have to keep in mind one thing: fun.

Forcing the player to fight a single enemy with a certain weapon (like the baron with the normal shotgun) isn't fun, is tedious and just makes the fight last longer than it should because enemies by themselves are easy by default.
Making thing take time isn't fun, but you can find ways to make them amusing by creating fun arenas, little waves of enemies and providing the means to take them.
For instance you can give the player a Super Shotgun and a lot of imps with ocassional Shotgun Guys to act as refillers for you. There's some catharsis in that idea in seeing how lots of imps fall to a single blast.

So yeah, try to think "what would be fun FOR SOMEONE ELSE?", "Would I like this?" or "Am I making this last longer than it should?"

On one hand it's neat to explore unnecessary areas, finding items and powerups in certain branches but nothing explicity needed to advance. Sometimes it gets kind of annoying, like the kind of 'jumping' you had to do in Doom II MAP15 to get to get the red key, which you could get a lot easier if you did the very unintuitive thing of going through the teleporter in the room then immediately jumping back thru the exit teleporter.

Or you could just jump straight into the chasm and into the teleporter there to deposit you in the middle area and ignore half of the stage.

Though personally I would use just a mid texture to make the porch railing, it'll look just as good while using less memory.
I'd also suggest making a screen door texture (even if just cobbling one together from stock Doom textures), and finding a glass texture for the window (you could just swipe one from like Action Doom or something). There exists rooftile textures, somewhere, I'll go see if I can find one, also I'd use that dark metal plating to texture the little chimney, I think the shiny metal texture makes it look like it hasn't been used.

Overall it looks really nice, just a bit of polish and it looks very good.

Something else I realized: Excepting a secret level, you never have to fight a Cyberdemon.

The first one you find, Barons do most of the work, and then you’re invincible to finish it off.

The next one you either kill while invincible or run past.

After that, Spiderdemon does most of the work. This one you can’t be invincible, but it’s still severely weakened.

The last one is literally irrelevant as you run past it for the exit.

A whole game without really going toe-to-toe with the game’s most iconic monster. What a waste.

The real problem is how The Living End is structured. If forced to fight the one at the top of the mountain in the center, it would be a pretty cool and climactic ending to the penultimate level, in an awesome setting. The previous fights would just be tastes of essentially the sub boss of the game. The reveal of him coming up on the lift is even cool. Having the exit readily available ruins all of that, and effectively ruins him for the whole game.

Just played Doom 64 EX. What a wild ride that was.

I only found one of the secret exits (by myself, found another with help) and I failed to get either of the bonus rune things. Couldn't figure how to get them at all.
The enemies are weird looking. I don't really like the design of the pain elementals or the cacodemons, but the PE are particularly demonic looking so I guess that's appropriate.

End boss kicked my ass and I was only playing on Bring It On (second difficulty).

Would recommend if you've put off playing it.

The Caleb skin is probably one of the weirdest I've seen in Quake 3.

Did you read what I said about Delta Touch hijacking gamepads too? The app has its own menu for assigning commands to a gamepad, which only covers basic commands (and not extra mod commands) and this blocks you from assigning commands to buttons inside GZDoom's own menus. Anyone know if any of the old guides for making those are still around? iirc Polycount was sort of "the place" for that when it was a skin site, before it went offline for several years and turned into a forum. A massive wealth of info on Unreal/Quake skin creation would've gone down with it.
I want to make a trashy skin for myself, but I at least need the rough texture/polycount guidelines and list of required animations to do that.
