I was going to get a Sega Saturn controller for emulation, when I realised that it doesn't have a select button. What are your favorite controllers for emulation.

>> No.4700180

I don't see why the lack of select button is a problem, seeing as that button's barely used, and most consoles that even HAVE a select button could leave enough buttons left over on the Saturn controller to just map it to the Z button or something.

I often switch between either the aforementioned Saturn controller or a Dualshock 2.

How's the d-pad on the saturn?

>> No.4700601

>>4700495
It's a smaller genesis pad that feels nicer. It feels more like an arcade stick than other d-pads. I would still use a SNES pad for SNES games, but the Saturn pad is fine for any pc, arcade or Sega console game

Saturn controller.

I rarely play using an emulator except mobile but if I did I'd either use an original controller from whatever console I was emulating or an arcade stick. If I fell for the saturn pad meme I'd probably add another 3 buttons.

Is the retrolink saturn control any good?

>> No.4701834

>>4701747
I like mine. It's almost as good as my JP Saturn pad. Kinda stiff at first, but once you wear it in the face buttons feel good. Shoulder buttons are harder to press down and the D-pad isn't as flexible as a real one, though it shouldn't affect gameplay that much. Also, if you end up disliking it, you can gut the internals and stick them inside a real Saturn pad rather than use a USB adapter which adds input lag.

Just a warning, the D-pad isn't textured so your thumb kinda slips, but if you get used to that, its an ok controller, the shoulder buttons suck ass tho.

There are the Playstation Saturn controllers that have select buttons. The Saturn controller has enough buttons by default for most of my emulation needs.

SNES = I use YZBC for the Super Nintendo's face buttons, L&R are matched, X&A are start and select.

MAME = Saturn face buttons are buttons 1-6 (enough for 85% of games), L to insert credit, R to pause MAME, and start button for start! If I opt to use the Playstation Saturn controller, I use the select button to take a screencap.

NeoGeo/MVS = varies depending on game, some use only 3 buttons, some I like to map punches on top kicks on bottom, for a rare case which I've not encountered which may need 4 buttons across I can opt to use AXYZ or ABCR.

Genesis maps 1-to-1, more than enough buttons for all portables, PCE, and NES.

N64 - I'd use another controller with an analog stick, but with the AKI Wrestling games, I do use the Sega Saturn pad. L&R for L&R, XYBC for the C direction buttons, X mapped to N64 B, and A is still A. Start is matched. For the taunts to activate the spirit meter, I don't mind mapping the analog directions to the keyboard directions.

I also like a lot of modern controllers too for emulation if I need twin sticks or the analog triggers for pedals. The Hori EX2 and Wii-U pro controller are pretty good for emulation to me.

>>4700495
It is my favorite. Probably the best I can execute in fighting games.

>>4701747
Since I am very familiar with the real ones, no. For most others, I think the shape on its own may be alright for a budget. I am eagerly awaiting RetroBit's USB releases of the pad and I hope they are up to the quality of authentic SLS ones.

Xbox one controller for dreamcast and gamecube.
And wii mote for wii emulation.

Do all the Dpads of each SLS USB Sega Saturn controller feel the same? Because I have the white one with different colored buttons that I'm pretty sure is authentic, especially because it came with the original box, but it feels different than the Dpads on all of my non-USB Sega Saturn controllers and those feel better.

The ones on the left are the Hori pad EX2, which has 6 face buttons, 2 analog sticks, decent D-pad, analog triggers, and that select button you crave (it's called a back button though). that may suit a lot of emulation needs. However the Wii-U pro pads have a symmetrical design layout for its two sticks, great for Smash TV or Virtual On, but it does not have analog triggers.

>>4702365
That controller porn is wonderful. I am jealous. I want all of that too. Ever since I destroyed a single Sega Saturn pad over years of intense GGPO play, I had to make sure I have backups just in case. That is why I am so hoping the new RetroBit reproduction ones are like the originals.

>>4702379
Even on the original Sega Saturn pads, I did not like the white ones as much, that's why it was the controller I used to destroy in years of intense GGPO play. The triggers clacked instead of clicked like all other Sega Saturn pads. However, the D-pad I don't think was much different. The cheap Retrolink ones that are everywhere use a non-textured D-pad disc and the silicone underneath are angled plus uses less material as a cost cutting measure which feels different to me. The holes are the same so the two plastic pieces for the d-pad can be swapped. The top disc of a D-pad that is visible cups a hemisphere underneath for its pivot action and the post from its center leads down to a cross-shaped activator which presses the membranes making contact to complete a circuit. It seems simple, but Sega was trying ways to reduce costs all the time themselves as well. Maybe those newer USB pads are the final revisions that doesn't jive with me. That is why I stuck with the older original ones.

I've accumulated a diverse selection to tackle whatever game I come across.
But I don't actually know which of the gamepads are my absolute favorite.
I suppose I'm a bit biased towards the Dualshock 2 since I grew up with the PS1 and PS2.

>> No.4702774

>>4702543
Well if that's even a small portion of "whatever" then you've led a very sheltered life. I think I actually have more unique 2600 controllers than there are things in that pic total.

>> No.4702795

>>4702774
I don't feel the need to spend any more money on any more controllers. I'm not a collector, nor do I feel like acquiring several different variants of the same controller type like in the pics above. Really, the only thing I'd feel like adding to right now is a N64 controller, but I hear the analog sticks on them tridents don't hold up very well from use, and the Saturn 3D Pad has worked strangely well for me on N64 games, as blasphemous and weird as that may sound.

Sixty dollars just for Saturn support is a bit ridiculous. It looks like a good investment if you want to use literally every controller but I don't.
I ended up going with a Mayflash adapter that does Saturn, PS2 and N64. I only really wanted Saturn but paying an extra two dollars over the model that only does Saturn so I can have PS2 support seems pretty reasonable. Has anyone used this particular model? I know Mayflash are seen as a good brand of adapter around here.
