Welcome to the Retro Game Gauntlet, gentlemen.

Start at NES, and work through in the following order:
NES
SNES
GB/GBC
Megadrive/Genesis
Turbografx16
DOS
NeoGeo
GBA
Commodore 64
Playstation 1

You have three days to complete the game without assistance (each game gets three days, though RPGs are allowed a week due to length).

Select your system here:
http://s3kr.it/gauntlet.html

You can also do it manually if you don't trust the random number generator:
http://s3kr.it/systems/

Rules:
1) Savestates are allowed ONLY for the purpose of taking screenshots and ONLY if your emulator/game in question does not have a pause function.
2) Rerolls are allowed under the following conditions:
-The game you get requires some sort of hardware functionality that cannot be accurately emulated to complete (eg, Boktai)
-The game would otherwise require cheats, hacks, or alteration of the software to complete due to a bug (eg, Cheetahmen II)
For games that have a high score or no end, the rule is
>if no high score has been established, set a goal and beat it
>if you.re playing something another anon already has a high score on, beat their high score
>if you are playing extended rpgs/pokemon/whatever you get a week (Depending on the game: needs to be asked in thread)

AND BRING ME SCREENSHOTS PARKER

IRC channel: #gauntlet on irc.rizon.net (Mibbit link on site)

NEW RULES/GUIDELINES TO POSTING IN THE GAUNTLET THREADS:

-Do not post screenshots every other screen, make them few and meaningful
-Do not start a new thread before current one bump limit is exceeded

Okay lads. I've been doing a special wagie/family man version of the gauntlet where I tally up the amount of hours spent on a game, with 36 as the limit. (To represent 3x12 hour gaming days, I miss my twenties.)

Consequentially, I've been gradually chipping away at Recca for weeks.

I'm now 11 hours into my 36 hour limit. I can make it to the end of Stage 3 about 50% of the time, but never fully powered. The stage 3 boss is very challenging and shits out homing missiles at you which bypass your shield. If you're lucky enough to still have the S shot secondary fire (seeker) by then, you can rely on it to take care of the missiles 90% of the time, but sometimes it'll miss one and you'll die, or the lasers will get you - and then it's back to the nearly impossible manual missile weave while dodging lasers AND placing bombs.

It's a well designed game but since it's made for Japanese shmup autists who castrated themselves to focus on their one true pursuit, and I'm practically a shmup virgin, I'm starting to think this is my limit. Stage 4 would be the final stage, but from what I hear it's a 7-boss rush.

... Maybe I should just give up and start over with a new NES game. This really might be beyond my capabilities.

This game really is one of those "figure out what the game wants you to do" games.

This is the second form of the fifth boss. He'll extend and retract his shield, and it's ridiculously difficult to try to get in between the gaps in it (it spins around) and chip away when you get the chance.

Hide up in the corner, then zip down and shoot charged shots at him when his shield is retracted, though, and he goes down in like 3 hits. I was stuck at him for quite a while before I figured that out.

I know, hence my comments about it, hahaha.

I actually worked out how to semi-reliably pass this boss on my next run after making this post. I tried to record a video of myself doing so but the file seems corrupted or something? I load it in the emulator (.NST format, Nestopia's own movie recording) and it just does nonsensical inputs that I didn't actually do and desyncs completely. Was gonna export to AVI, convert to webm, and post.

Anyway, the way you do it is this (in case anyone else rolls Recca:)

1: As soon as the boss starts loading, charge a bomb. Move up to about a third of the way up the screen and all the way right. Place the bomb the second it's done loading and move back to the bottom of the screen. Fire like a madman at the front-right turret. Dont' bomb. Just hold fire and dodge the bullets. Hope your touhou skills are acceptable. The bomb and bullet combination will take out the front-right turret quickly. You'll occasionally have to weave left a tiny bit to shoot down any missiles coming from the front-left turret. Don't go as far as the middle of the lasers will get you.

2: Once the front-right turret is down, move in front of the front-left one, dodging lasers as you go. Stay right in front of it and make small movements to dodge the danmaku fire from the other turrets. This will now be the only turret shitting heat-seeking missiles at you, and you'll automatically shoot them all down if you're sat right under it.

>>4685798

3: Once the front two turrets are gone, there are no more missiles - but each dead turret makes the lasers come more frequently, so it's now risky to go up the middle of the boss and plant bombs on the green core. Instead, park yourself on the right of the screen, and whenever the boss is at the end of the "inertia" it experiences at the far left, run up and place a bomb to the RIGHT of the whole boss, at the TOP of the screen. It'll float right into it and the green core will take full bomb damage.

Rinse and repeat until it dies, using the shield that comes up while your bomb is charging to soak up the danmaku from the 2-4 remaining turrets. (The two other ones on the right will die as you chip away at the boss with bombs from the outside.)

Here's the 6th boss, he's bullshit as all hell. He flies around the screen firing these icicles in a spiral, and while they don't LOOK that hard to avoid, your dragon's vertical hitbox is so obnoxiously large you constantly get hit even when you're sure you flew between two of them.

Best strategy is just to stay the hell away from him and fire the Steel Dragon's homing super shots. The Spark Dragon's smart bombs probably work too, but they feel weaker.

7th boss. He walks back and forth firing downwards, while fireballs form out of the air and home in at you. If you hit him with non-super shots he'll fire hard-to-avoid pink balls at you, so you need to avoid doing that, which makes avoiding those fireballs a lot harder since you can't fire constantly to get rid of them.

If you hide in the corner here he (usually) can't hit you, and you can just spam either smart bombs or, if you still have the Steel Dragon from last stage like I did, homing shots.

And here's the trouble spot I mentioned. You need to get into the left passage, the right one is a dead end, but you can't hit those cannons on the south wall, and there are cannons up north that will fire down into the safe spots between the south cannons' fire, so you need to make this very specific dodge up towards the left wall, and you need to do it quit before those north cannons scroll onscreen.

That wasn't really all that difficult. He fires a bunch of different homing shots, most of which can't be destroyed, and can only be hurt by super shots, so once you get a handle on how to circle the guy to avoid what he fires it's not too hard. It helps that you get a speed powerup right before the battle.

Apparently the final boss was really the transformed state of this goddess or whatever she is. The game could've probably benefited from explaining the plot in the opening cutscene, since I'm not entirely sure what's going on here, but it seems like I saved the world anyway.

Wonder if this ending is exclusive to the console port, the arcade version wouldn't exactly have a manual where the plot could be detailed.

Anyway, game beaten. It wasn't THAT difficult once I got the hang of it, but some of the later stages had a lot of places where you really need to know what's coming and how you have to react to it in advance. Not the best shmup I've played, but the concept is original and both stages and bosses look really cool.

Okay so I went from having a good understanding of what it was I was doing, to having absolutely no clue in a heartbeat. Mostly just wandering around large cavernous buildings and beating the shit out of any monsters and then recruiting some on occasion.

I lost my fucking dog to plot after I combined him with a few things so I don't know if that's an SMT punch to the nuts or if I'll get him back.

Currently though I'm 'kind of' enjoying the game? I wish I had even a smallest bit more direction. Looking for the girl, but all I know is she's the leader of a revolution against the american army?

Ok, let's just bullshit our way through this with save states. The game uses a pretty cool system where you need to pay to save with ingame money, which exists in a limited amount, and where the price increases as you progress. There's no way to mimic this with savestates, so I'll just have to not save too often, I guess. Strategic saving is important, since the game has stuff like unidentified potions that can be identified by either casting a spell or by just drinking it and checking. The first unidentified potion you find is poison, which teaches you to not do that. You can also get rid of important items by using them wrong, which will perma-dead end you.

But yeah, it's an isometric adventure where you can interact with, push, pull and pick up practically everything. The game can be a bit dickish at times with hiding keys and the like under random other crap, so it's important to be thorough. Unfortunately the fighting system is rather awful, with the only weapon I've found, a sack of throwing rocks, being horrendously hard to hit anything with, but at least you get nearly 300 of them on the first level, so I guess it's intended.

I've almost made it through the first area, the game says I've explored 95% of it, but I screwed myself over by not realizing a warp activated by pouring holy water into a holy bowl and then drinking from it had to be done three times. The game does hint that it CAN be done three times, but by the time I realized it gets you different items every time you do it I had already wasted one bottle of holy water elsewhere.

It's pretty solid puzzle-wise, and hasn't been too hard to figure out yet, I'm liking it a lot.

Also, while replying, I just figured out the puzzle involving this guy. When you enter his cell he tells you he's hungry, and you can feed him one of the food items you've found to get a hint.
What I didn't realize until now was that different food items give you different hints, and one of them I just got was part of a combination code I've spent forever searching for.
This is one of those games you need to replay individual levels a lot in.

Played it before?
I beat level 1, turned out that warp thing I reset for was just for some extra spells and that what I really was supposed to do was get the code from that prisoner.

This is the original Cadaver, not Cadaver: The Payoff, though. That's an expansion to the game, and I tried it for a bit and couldn't get anywhere - I'm stuck in the first set of 7 rooms where I've found a guy that wants "supper" (can't find anything he accepts), a bunch of locked doors, one which opens with a key I found and one that opens with a lever next to it, some holes that need two daggers inserted in them, which I've found one of, a locked chest I don't have the key for, and a trapped chest I don't have a dispel trap spell for. It seems a lot more puzzle-heavy and complex, so I gave the original a shot instead, and it's a lot easier to figure out.

Managed to figure that bit out, you had to search corpses for diaries and then insert them in the slot at the start of the inn, since different people had access to different rooms. The diary I found in the locked room I needed the key for belonged to a mage that had access to a magic room where I could use some levers to have a teleport spell send me to the kitchen where a found a turkey for the hungry guy and that dispel trap spell I needed.

Here's a neat room where a magic force field prevents me from going into the right side, so I needed to use a magnetized lodestone to have the key hit that glowing teleport orb, which teleports it past the forcefield. You're stuck if you enter the room without that lodestone, though.

It's a fun game, but can be pretty tricky at times.

Jesus, this addon is tough. Not only are the puzzles kinda complex, a lot of it involves effective use of magic and objects to work your way around things. One room had two vertically moving spike bars where the only solution I could find was to block them in place with a pole item and then jumping over them after drinking both a speed potion and a jump potion to get the necessary air and distance to my jump. Another room had a bunch of flamethrowers where I had to use a speed potion and an immortality potion and just run past. A lot of rooms open up for improvised solutions. It's pretty cool, but also pretty difficult and requires a LOT of restarts.

There was a pretty cool room where you had to toss chicken legs over a group of spikes in order to lure a slime monster into crawling through the spikes and destroying them, but while you get a single chicken leg in that room (if you're fast - chances are the slime will eat it before you even notice it), it's highly unlikely you'll be able to clear the room if you didn't carry any with you.

I got to the end of the first level, but I'll have to restart since opening the chest containing what I think is the exit key set off an alarm that sealed the room off, and I'll need a strength potion to escape.

>> No.4691071

Okay, so I want to show off the beginning of Cadaver the Payback to demonstrate how the game works and how this is absolutely an experts-only addon.

The gameplay is complex in a fairly simple-to-understand manner. It's an isometric adventure where you want around with the arrow keys and do pretty much everything else with the G key. Normally it jumps, if you have an item equipped it will attack if the item is a weapon and throw the item if it isn't, and if you have a menu displayed it chooses options. Touching an object that can be interacted with will call up a menu where you can choose actions like investigate, pick up, grab, open, eat etc. The return button opens an item menu where you can choose an item from your inventory and interact with it from a similar menu, which will also include drop and equip.

The scroll in this room is the diary, which you carry around throughout the entire game and can use the read command on to see Karadoc's current stats. In this room it has a slightly different purpose, though - the top door is locked and the slot next to it says "members only", but by inserting your diary the door will open. Failing to realize the importance of this is how I got stuck so long.

On the other side is this main entrance room. You can pick up your diary again here, it will automatically spawn on that table if you insert it in the slot. The altar here will tell you to insert two "daggers of the brotherhood" if you investigate it. The book on the altar is a register listing the brotherhood members as you and some other guys named Purgino, Harridan, Marcus, Valuin, Jams, Hugh and Purval. If you search the skeleton in the corner you'll find another diary and learn that it's the skeleton of this Hugh guy. The chest and the door to the right are both locked, but the top door is open.

That door leads to this guest room section. The left door is locked, but the two others lead to guest room 3 and 2. The top passage leads to the second area of this corridor.

In guest room 3 you can move the pillow on the bed out of the way to find one of the brotherhood daggers underneath. It can be equipped as a weapon, but doesn't seem to do any damage to the enemies in this section, and you need it for the altar anyway. There's also a cabinet here that can be opened to find a Super Fast Potion with 4 charges (drink it for a temporary speed boost) a "holy symbol", and a bible I think is just there for fluff.

Guest room 2 has signs of struggle. This is where the guys that hired you were staying, you'll find some pieces of armor you identify as theirs, as well as a journal behind a barrel in the corner mentioning that after you left to kill the necromancer, all the villagers have been turning into monsters, and the only ones so far unaffected are the innkeeper and barkeeper. There's also a cabinet here containing a key marked "room 1" and a sack with 90 gold. Gold is used to save the game, but I can't get that to work for some reason and had to use save states instead.

The second part of the guest corridor has these monsters walking around. The bottom one is nearly impossible to avoid, but doesn't deal much damage and will die itself when it touches you. The other one deals far more damage and doesn't seem possible to kill.
Both doors here are locked. The door to the right leads to guest room 1,and can be opened by using the key you found on the keyhole next to it. The top door is opened by pulling the lever next to it.

Guest room 1 contains a strong box, but it's trapped, which means trying to open it will just hurt you. You can investigate chests to see if they're trapped or not, and not doing that with every chest you find will quickly lead to your death. The other items here are a bowl, two bones and two sacks of clothes (which are pretty big, and thus very handy to carry around to use as platforms). Investigating the skeleton will reveal another diary, and you'll learn this is the corpse of your mercenary buddy Valuin the mage.

The top door in the corridor leads to the refectory, where the innkeeper is waiting. He notices you're looking for your friends and says he might help you if you bring him his supper. There's a Stamina Potion (health recovery) on the table and some assorted crap lying around - three bones, a plate and a mug, but nothing else of interest. The door to the left is locked.

This is where I got stuck when I first tried this.

What you're supposed to do is to return to the first room. Remember you had to insert your own diary in the slot to get access to the main guest area? Well, if you insert Valuin's diary the system will think you're him, and he has access to the magic chamber behind that locked door in the Guests Entrance (you can also insert Hugh's diary, but I don't think this lets you access anything new). Here you'll find a locked chest with Purval's name on it, a magic orb that lets you use the Teleport spell, and three levers. This bit was also pretty tough to figure out.

To use spells, you equip the spell item, then press the G button. The Teleport spell normally doesn't do anything, and if you try using it in any room other than the Magic Chamber you'll just get a message saying it can only be used there. If you investigate the levers, you'll see the letters O, A and B on them. Flipping the levers and then looking at them again will have them spell B, R and D, so if you flip the middle one, you'll spell the word "ORB". This will make the Teleport spell work, and using the orb will warp you to the kitchen. You can also flip them to spell "BAD", which will make the spell warp you to a room I'm pretty sure is just a death trap.

The kitchen contains a bowl, a cleaver, a chicken, two chicken legs, a loaf of bread and three mugs. There's a corpse in the corner you can investigate to learn that it's Purval's and get his diary, a cabinet you can open to get a Dispel Trap spell, and a lever you can pull to unlock the northeast door, which was that locked door in the guest passage. The two other doors in the kitchen are locked.

At this point you have a bunch of stuff you can do.

You can also go back to the entrance and place Purval's diary in the slot, which magically unlocks his chest in the Magic Chamber, which contains 317 gold, which is presumably enough for a good deal of saves. This is obviously optional, though.

What you need to do to progress, however, is to return to Guest Room 1 and use the Dispel Trap spell you found on the strongbox there. After doing this, you can open it and find a Turn Monster spell (makes monsters avoid you for a while), a blue casket you'll need for a later puzzle, and the second brotherhood dagger you needed.

Placing the two daggers in the altar in the Guest's Entrance will make the tapestry slide up and reveal a button. Pushing this will make a chest key fall down from the ceiling. This opens the chest in that room, which contains a Massacre spell (heavy damage to all monsters, I think - you use it in the original game to kill a "boss" at the end of the first level) and another "holy symbol". These holy symbols later need to be combined with the blue caskets, so you need to locate 3 of each.

Finally, if you return to the innkeeper and give him the chicken, he'll unlock the other door in the refectory for you and give you a locked red casket as a thank you for your trouble. You'll later get an "Open Chest" spell you can use to open it and find that it just contains a Stamina Potion, which I doubt is worth wasting that spell on. Maybe there's some other way to open it that I didn't discover? Either way, passing through that door the innkeeper opened will lead to the bar and finally get you out of these initial sets of rooms.

And that was only roughly the first third of this level. It's pretty cool, but my god can it be overly complicated. Definitely intended for people that had played and beaten the original.

Well, managed to finally beat level 1 of Payback. Turned out that deathtrap isn't actually a deathtrap, just a slightly difficult puzzle room you need to warp into near the end via a different teleporter that's preprogrammed to take you there.

Unfortunately the game crashes on level 2, either when I enter the menu or when I walk into a specific room. It's a real shame, I was genuinely enjoying this one.

The plot got kinda nonsensical, though. After the innkeeper lets you into the bar, the rest of the level is focused around you trying to find the landlord's bedroom so you can steal the front door key from his treasure chest, and I can't for the life of me understand why you have to leave via that door and not the guest entrance you originally used. Blah.

Not sure what I'll do, the game is genuinely impossible for me to complete now.

I'm actually kinda digging this game. The controls are tight and responsive, and I feel like the platforming is leagues better than the slippery bullshit the avgn made it out to be. However each level contains several forced combat sections, and they do really drag the pacing down.

I think I'm on the final level right now. It's visually distinct from the other three level tropes that have been used up to this point (town, sewers, pier), and is acknowledged by the pre level dialog as being "the hardest part of my journey."

And just like that, I got it to work. Save files work too, and somehow I'm able to use my game disk as a save disk. I'm not sure exactly how it works, I think the emulator uses some weird temporary state system where the emulator reads my game disk as a formatted save disk when I try to save and load, but as the actual game disk otherwise. Already burned through 30 missions. Most of my losses are from getting thrown off by the physics. I keep moving the puyos when I think they've locked into place, but they lock on slower than the normal games. The game also feels faster than normal Puyo games. There are 6 colors, which makes the game a but dependent on RNG. Particularly in missions that require a specific color. Pic related was a bad case. You have to clear all red Puyos, but there were only 3 left at the end. I had to dump unnecessary ones to the side and chain them so it wouldn't overfill for almost a minute before the game finally spawned a fourth red.

I'm probably overdoing it a bit by mapping this area to this much detail, but this place is huge, confusing and incredibly deadly. Your ability to save being so limited doesn't help matters either, especially when a lot of items can be used in multiple ways and will dead end you if you use them wrong. And god help you if you run out of weapons.

Right now I'm mostly just exploring and reloading a bunch to figure out where the game wants me to use that two-charges-only Unlock Door spell it gave me. Not a whole lot of difficult puzzles in this area, but a surprising amount of places where you need to build towers of random crap in order to climb to some high area. I think there's been like four already, and this is just the first half of the level. Treating this as an RPG and giving myself a week, since it's pretty long and slow-paced.

Doesn't help that the game pulls dick moves like these either. This is the Bankers Lodge, which you need to use the Unlock Door spell to enter (the spell only works on three doors here, so if you don't guess which those are and waste the spell, tough shit, gotta restart/reload). There's some money here, and a trapped chest I can't open yet since I still don't have a Disarm Trap spell, but there's also a jade hidden from view behind the table, and you need that shit. It's the third precious stone on this level, and you need to place these in some skulls in order to open a gate. And because the game hates you, this needs to be done with the Give command that makes you lose the item you use no matter if it was the correct one or not, and there's no indication which skull needs which gem. As long as you comb the rooms carefully it's not too bad. There was a crucial item hidden in a random barrel earlier on this level too.

Remember this is supposed to be an expert-only addon, and that you can save and load at any time, but you need to pay ingame money to save. The game wants you to save and load a bunch to experiment and figure out how to handle shit.
The Jewelers Lodge has an alarm system where you're attacked by spiders if you try to exit carrying the caskets or ruby, and you need to pull a lever at the far side of the room after triggering it to turn it off so you can exit, and it was actually pretty fun coming up with a solution to how to do this without getting hit. You need to prearrange furniture around the room so you can jump around a bit and get the spiders stuck behind a table. Not overly complicated (and the spiders don't outright kill you, so you don't NEED to do this if you're willing to tank some damage), but took a few tries.

It IS enjoyable, seriously.

I fought the first boss, a statue of the creator of the giants. He was pissed that I woke him up from slumber. Right before the fight, a giant named Ture, who was imprisoned by the other giant from earlier, joined the party. Now Sion is off to fight in a tournament that decides who becomes the captain of the knights. But before that, I'm going to start another character's story.

Getting close-ish to the end of this area now (my diary says I've been to 70% of the rooms so far).

This puzzle was pretty neat. There's a key lying on top of a bunch of spikes, so you need to toss a bunch of random crap onto the spikes and then shove the entire line of stuff until you manage to push the key off.

This mapping and note-taking is also working out pretty well. Finally got a single Dispel Trap spell, and it was nice to be able to instantly check which chests were trapped and where they were located. Ended up disarming the trap on the locked one in the Village Store, assuming this chest key I found there would unlock it, and it did, giving me lots of money and a Freeze spell. Now I just have to hope the game didn't require me to open a very specific other chest, but that sounds overly cruel even for this game.

Level 1 was some grassland area, boss was Wile E. Coyote which was weird since he is portrayed as the big bad guy in the intro. Level 2 was a desert area with some bullshit "The ground will now fall out so RUN" areas, boss was Yosemite Sam. Level 3 is some mountain area with lava spots. Had Elmer Fudd as a miniboss halfway through, then Sylvester and his son? on skateboards for the boss. Currently sitting on about 40 lives going into 4-1 since the game throws lives at you like crazy in the bonus rounds if you collect enough carrots.

It wasn't until I played for a bit that I remembered why I hated this shit so much. Trying to do an attack with precision is nearly impossible, movement is funky, and the level designers enjoy putting enemies exactly where you're jumping or landing.

Started the chapter of Surlent, the sorcerer. The intro answered some questions I had with the plot. There's a myth of an apocalypse that occurs every 4000 years. The game takes place in the last 16 days of the year 3999. The thing I fought earlier is from a Lago Stone, and it is a Rudra, basically the creator and destroyer of the race.
Surlent's story starts off with researching the Lago Stone of the Reptiles, another extinct race. He goes to get the Holy Grail in order to help, but some young "treasure hunters" stole the grail. Now he has to get the other 2 receptacles.

There was another receptacle, the Holy Robe, at a cave. Those treasure hunters were there too. They said they'll give back the Grail if they can have a look at the Robe. Surlent thinks this is a good idea and now the treasure hunters have two out of three receptacles.
There's a cult that's been kidnapping children in broad daylight using living dolls. Surlent and co. go check that out. Looks like Sion's also investigating.

So there's a spell in the game that lets you talk to dead people. One of the corpses you can spend a charge on is located in an area where the door closes after you've already grabbed the item there (which you needed earlier), so the only way to reach the corpse after getting the spell is to waste an Unlock Door spell on the door. The result? Yeah.

And yeah, this is not something you'd even think of trying without saving beforehand.

It's not AS dickish as it sounds, though. You get 6 charges of this spell, and the one corpse you're supposed to cast it on is pretty obviously the priest, the only corpse you identify by looking at it, who's found right next door to where you get the spell. All the other corpses seem to just give joke "info".

And right now I'm pretty damn stuck. I feel like I've explored most of the city, with only a few locked areas I can't get into. The game really seems to want me to get into the high priest's house so I can uncurse this gem I found in the morgue, but I can't find the key anywhere. There's also this weird chest in the mayor's house that disappears when I touch it, and I feel like I'm missing something there. It's also unclear to me which chest the game wants me to disarm, one gives me that talk to the dead spell, another a second unlock chest spell, and the third a powerful freeze spell, and they all feel important.

Fucking figured it out! This is the entrance to the house located in that weird gap in the middle of the map, which has two levers in front of it. The levers start out in opposite orientations, but pulling one will make the other adjust as well. The solution was to cast the Dispell Curse spell on the levers to lift the curse that makes them act this way, then set them both to down position.

I figured it out by just combing the map and trying to figure out why all the stuff directing me to the priest's house were at the start of the level, around the same time you find this dispell curse scroll, then trying to figure out what it could possibly be used on. These levers were my dozenth guess, but that's what the game wanted me to do.

I'd probably have benefitted from playing the original first and having some sort of idea what Dispell Curse can be used for.

Nope, that was not it. You can put the cursed gem in it, though, so my next guess is that I need to do so in order to purify it, since a book in the Healer's house told me "the true altar should not be soiled with the remains of human sacrifice".

Problem is that I need to go to the priest's house to do this, and I still can't find the key to it. At this point I'm pretty convinced I'm missing something obvious, since the game is pretty much screaming at me to go do this before passing those jewel skulls.

That seems to have been it. The Activate spell can get items out of chests without opening them. By opening the locked chest in the council hall with the Unlock Chest spell to get a Dispel Trap spell, then using Activate on the chest in the bank to get another Unlock Chest spell, I could use both the Dispel Trap and Unlock Chest spells on the trapped and locked casket I found in the smith's house to get some new keys.

I also like how the solution to getting items down from high places is always to make weird towers out of fried chicken and other assorted crap. Despite the deaths, the bonus rounds have me back up to 95 lives going into 6-1, which appears to be a castle or something, I don't know.

5-2 had Elmer Fudd come back, and 5-4 had Foghorn Leghorn and that smartass little annoying guy who's bothering him sometimes. They were VERY easy to beat, since neither one required you to take damage to deal damage, or put yourself into a situation where you might take damage.

Figured that puzzle out now, the fact that I was able to open it by hammering the button quickly before it disappeared was most likely a glitch. What you were supposed to do was to use the Reveal spell from the Wizard's house on the room to make the chest materialize again after disappearing. The mayor's house is right next door from the wizard's, so it was a very quick detour that gets you a rather solid amount of money. I'm starting level 3 now and have nearly 2000 gold, while the price for saving is a bit over 200.

I like the save system in this game, where each save costs an increasing amount of gold. Really encourages replaying earlier sections so you can beat them with less saves and thus be able to save more later. In practice it's pretty much just the same as Resident Evil's ink ribbons and the like, but it makes you less certain just how many times you CAN save and actively encourages searching for hidden rooms with extra gold.

There's a goblet in the room with him, alongside some books, a Fireball spell and some books. Placing the goblet under the wine barrel and turning the tap fills it with wine, but giving it to the priest will just make him demand more and give you the empty goblet back. The solution was to drop the glass orb on the ground to smash it, then drop the broken glass in the goblet, fill it with wine and serve it to the priest to kill him, then search his body for a key.

Been on this for a while trying to figure it out but might take a break and come back to it because Unless there's some mechanic I'm not aware of (and there has to be) this level is above me while I'm below water.

This is such a cool puzzle. You find this incantation you can read in the altar rooms to summon objects based on what talismans you have placed in their holders, but earlier in the temple you find a translate spell you most likely tried using on the incantation to find out what it meant. But logically enough, the incantation must be read as is to work, so the translation spell just ruins it. It's clever and makes perfect sense.

Turns out Desert Rose uses only Earth attacks, and it's weak to lightning. I found a spell that does wind damage then adds float status. After playing around with it, I figured out how to make it target all. (NA doesn't work, you have to put O at the beginning.) I also typed swears into the spells list while grinding and found out that "YOUASSHOLE" is a good lightning spell. Desert Rose became a joke thanks to the float spell and assholes.
Now I'm getting rekt by the dude that took my body. He moves first and starts the battle with a spell that can OHKO two of my guys, so it looks like I'm grinding again.

The puzzles are getting tough. Earlier in the temple I found three objects (an urn with ashes, a bottle with a foul-smelling liquid that poisons me if I drink it, and a silver bowl with runes on it) inside a circle. If you check the door in the room before picking them up, you'll see that it's closed. Later in the temple you find a second circle and have to place the same items inside it to remove a wall in another room.

It's clever, but it also requires you to remember exactly what items you found where.

I love the atmosphere in this temple. There's barely any enemies in here, it's all about navigating around booby traps and unlocking complex locking mechanisms. This is the Luna Shrine, where I have to place the four L, U, N and A orbs in order to make a lever in the nearby Orbis Shrine open a secret door instead of the visible door it normally opens.
It all has this Indiana Jones feel to it.

Sub-Zero at the moment. I think I figured out how to get through this, which is basically just spamming his ground-slide attack. I can't get his freeze to work at all though.

But the way it works, and I'll try to get a screenshot, is that even when on the ground, enemies don't have immunity. The sweep will still hit them, knock them airborne, and then give me enough time to do another sweep as soon as they hit the ground. Once they're in a corner the match is over.

But it's murder on my forearm pushing the buttons rapidly for like a minute straight. The damage on this game is all sorts of fucked. Roundhouses and Uppercuts do a fraction of what they normally do. Everything seems to hit for the same amount meaning that if you can do the punches over and over, you can very easily kill someone in just a few seconds.

On Novice, that was every fight. Here on Master, it's almost impossible to land more than two.

Also, Scorpio (Scorpion is too long for the bar) with his spear doesn't stun them, so you're just bringing them in close to beat the shit out of you. I dropped him pretty quick.

This is the best I've got. Basically you just hold away from them and hit A+B together, and Sub-Zero slides across the screen. Potentially going to be done with Master here in the next hour, if my forearm holds out.

So basically the goal of this game is to connect the moving red gear on the left, to the unmoving one on the right. You have 3 gear sizes.

Small, which connect to medium U/D/L/R, and to Large UL/UR/BL/BR.

Medium Gears which connect to each other at UL/UR/BL/BR, and not at all to Large Gears.

Large Gears which connect to each other at U/D/L/R.

It's basically just maneuvering around the field and setting up the gears in conjunction. So far it's pretty easy but we'll see if it ramps up.

Another clever puzzle that took me a while. This elevator platform starts out by going up and down inside that "cage" to the left. You can't enter the cage, but you can push items into it if they're thin enough to fit between the bars. The elevator will start going upwards once it hits the ground, or whatever item you placed on the ground, and if it goes high enough above the cage, it will start going right across the room and start going down that other cage instead. If you toss items into that cage the same will happen, so you can set it up to alternate cages every turn and thus constantly pass through the middle of the room.

You'd think you could just make a stack of items and jump onto the platform when it passes through the room, but there's a weird warp field in the air towards the top of the room that will warp you to the previous one when touched, so you can't actually get near that platform. Instead, the trick is to realize the elevator starts going down when it hits the wall, toss some rocks onto the elevator to create a little stack there, then toss a rock so that the stack you built will hit that rock as it falls downwards. The elevator will interpret this as having touched the wall and go down in the middle of the room, and you can quickly jump on and grab the casket before it rises back up.

Well apparently it's a jap-only sequel to 3D World Runner. It's a pretty fun game so far, although it is the kind of game that doesn't give you any continues and sends you back to the start of the game when you run out of lives. It's very challenging and it's making me realise that my reflexes are slowly but surely going to shit as I get older.

A unusual thing about the game is that it has some weird stereoscopic 3D mode that activates if you press select. You probably need to wear special glasses for it to work or something, I dunno. Also it's an early Square game released a couple of weeks before Final Fantasy and Nobuo Uematsu even composed the soundtrack. This must have been before he hit his stride because it's all very generic stuff so far, even kinda annoying in places to be honest.

Still, good game. Sort of like if Space Harrier with platformer elements. I'm probably not going to be able to beat it though.

Yeah. A lot of the early Square games did this, including both 3D World Runner and Rad Racer. It was what they tried focusing on before they switched to RPGs with Final Fantasy.

This puzzle annoys me. There's obviously a way to get whatever this item is out of the urn (I'm assuming it's the key to the casket you find in the nearby room, since I got the content out with the Activate spell and it's all stuff you need in this area, not in the area where the Activate spell is), but I can't figure it out. I thought putting water in it would help, but nope.

Also in this game: Mega Man blocks.
These particular ones are pretty easy, there was a harder set last level where the block you were standing on would disappear at the same time the next one appeared, so you had to time it correctly.

I think this is the endgame... I've been to nearly every room on this level, and this is where the guys that hired me in the first game seem to be imprisoned. One of them has killed himself already... the game has a time system, wonder if it's related to that, or if there's no way to prevent it.

Okay, so only one prisoner is still alive. I can free him, but all that happens is that the door behind me gets locked and he tells me I'll never escape. I can unlock the door with the Unlock Door spell, so that's not a problem. The other three cells just contain skeletons, most notably skulls with emeralds inside. The door at the end of the prison has a voice demanding I bring the skulls of my patrons, which I can't do since I haven't found the key to cell 1 yet. I assume there's a final boss or something behind that door, and that this is the end of the game, I've been to 90% of the rooms with 40 rooms visited, and I've found a total of 42, two of them being death traps, so there's just one or two more rooms to find. There's a curious spot on the map west of the Fred Room, might be something there.

I've also found a glass orb that contains a key, but no way of breaking it. The orb is also cursed and hurts me whenever I'm holding it or is in a room less than two rooms away from it, so it's a bit hard to experiment with.

But I'll get this shit done.

This room sucks ass. You need to push those six buttons in the right order to open the door (you get a chime when you push the next one in the sequence, so it's not THAT evil), but the room is constantly damaging you, so you need to chug an immortal potion and then push the buttons before it runs out. Since the potion doesn't last that long, that means a whole ton of reloading a save as you work out the correct order.

The levels rotate out, you are in some kind of aerial ship for one level in which the game acts as a shmup, and your powers cycle your ships "weapons". Fire shoots traditional laser-like shots, earth drops rocks good for hindering ground enemies, etc. After you do a level like that, you play as Captain Planet, where the game turns into a metroidy kinda platformer and your powers turn you into a ball of energy based on what power you have selected. The water ability lets Captain Planet go through some objects, fire will hurt enemies, and so on.

The levels arent long, but you need to figure out which powers to use pretty much through trial and error.

Okay so it appears to be a gameboy roguelike. You pick one of four missions (this one I'm on is to kill 3 enemies) and you move about on a grid. Enemies only move when you move. You also get four random (at least I think they're random) items at the start.

It's definitely interesting so far and I like the idea behind it as I'm pretty sure it's designed to just sort of...grab-and-go. You can play a mission on a lunch break and then save it and be done until the next time.

I'm digging it at least so far. We'll see how it gets past the early levels.

Also, I realized the hidden dolls are hidden inside fake rocks that your axe will pass through if you throw it at them, which I vaguely remembered from when I played this way back in the day, but it's still a dumb system. You never know if you have to actively search rocks or not, which means if you warp past a doll you won''t be able to instantly tell if you collected one or just accidentally missed one until you beat the stage, at which point it's too late. You can't search rocks with the skateboard either.

7-1, all dolls found so far. The game is starting to get tough, but not overwhelmingly so. The dolls are a bit annoying to look for, not so much because they're hard to find than because you have to stop and check every stone you see, even when this puts you at risk. It's especially annoying on stages that don't give you an axe at the checkpoints so you need to bump into the rocks instead.

You play as a llama shooting diagonally upwards at invading spiders, and can control a forcefield up and down to make your shots ricochet off it. hitting a spider kills it, while hitting its string will make it fall to the ground and start crawling around. You can choose to start at any level from 1-32, and I managed to beat level 32 and confirmed doing so sends you to level 33.

Pic related is my best attempt so far, starting at level 1 and making it to level 15 with 99188 points. Not sure what kind of goal I should set myself, I'll just keep playing and see if I can do better.

142686 points on level 17. I think I'll try for 200000.

Not sure how much I'm liking the game. It's a good concept, but what you see on level 1 is what you get, and your strategy is going to remain the same "try to set yourself up in a position where you can cover a decent amount of horizontal ground by pressing up and down while also mastering how you need to position yourself to kill stuff on the opposite side when necessary" one, preferably with also starting each level by trying to clear out as many spiders as possible before they start overwhelming you to know that quote number down to a more manageable amount.

I dunno, it's not like it's really any more simplistic than something like Space Invaders, but it doesn't really grab me.

I also am having trouble with my game (Captain Planet guy here). Ive been playing for over three days, but only have about 3 or 4 hours invested in it. Im still not sure if the spirit of the rule is 3 days and thats it, or if you get 72 hours to complete a game.

I figured out that most levels have a "trick" and if you can apply the right power correctly, it makes the level much easier. There are no hints or guides, so this is all done through process of elimination. I figured out in this level I had to use the Heart power on a frozen bear so it would chase after this oil truck, slowing it down enough for me to drop a rock (using Earth power) in front of it.

It's hard to apply any real strategy in this game, and while there's absolutely ways to play more carefully and ways to maximize the amount of points you get, it always ultimately boils down to luck. If the spiders corner you, you're fucked, and there's no sure-fire way to prevent that. The controls are too jerky to allow for very accurate aiming too.

>Mix TV Presents: Eminem (also known as Mix TV Presents The Eminem Game in the ESRB database) was a game that was to be developed by Conspiracy Entertainment based off the rapper, Eminem. Announced on May 14, 2003, the game was to feature six puzzles for players to complete, as well as four music videos by Eminem (two of which were revealed: "My Name Is" and "The Real Slim Shady") and unspecified bonus material.

>The game was completed and submitted to the ESRB in two separate forms (the standard receiving a T rating for "Comic Mischief, Mild Lyrics, Suggestive Themes", and the 'uncut' receiving an M for "Strong Lyrics").

>On July 28, 2003, Conspiracy Entertainment filed a $5 million lawsuit against Eminem's representatives for pulling out of the deal, supposedly because they were looking for a bigger company to release the game.

Game's not too bad. Decent selection of games, nice controls, solid graphics. You always play against 3 other players, which can be human or computer-controlled, and the goal is to be the first to reach a specific total sum. All four players will be playing the same game at the same time, and you can switch between them as you please.

Found a neat trick with the roulette, too. The game is pretty insistent on having SOMEONE win something nearly every round, so by just betting on every single thing the computer players bet on, you'll end up making big money every time they do, which is unrealistically often.

Plot is just the average "AN ANCIENT EVIL HAS AWOKEN" shit, but the party system is pretty unique.
Aside from the amnesiac(of course) MC you get two party slots for story characters who rotate every once in a while and then one party slot for a Donut Steel mercenary that you can customize as you see fit.

Also the MC comes from a town called Beta Village, which I thought was funny.

I went for the equipment and the hero died. However instead of morale being crushed like the demons had hoped, the forces of light and indeed the other gods have rallied behind me.
Then I got my memories back and found out that I used to serve under that hero as a nameless rank and file soldier. Our forces got separated and I apparently managed to humiliate the second in command of the demons in single combat so he blew up our ship in order to kill me. I survived but a head injury resulted in memory loss until I arrived at the site of the battle, which incidentally was also the coast of my hometown which he then destroyed to erase evidence of him getting rekt. Now the greatest warriors of the three countries plus totally not Atlantis have formed a small squad to go kill the demon lord, with me at it's head. I assume I'll be settling the score with the second in command as well.

Wish me luck lads.
Not that I'll really need any. The game has been so easy that I haven't needed to use magic a single time in combat. healing or otherwise.

So, every time you die the game starts all over. It's a one shot journey through the labyrinth that's random every time.

Also you can eat yourself to death.

OK this game really doesn't care if you live or die. It's completely random!

Made it to the 2nd area of the game. Funky but repetitive tune. They made me fight a huge room of monsters but it was just a matter of kiting them to regen health while walking.

Decided to avoid taking potions all together unless I haven't found the heal potion yet. Too many "you feel hungry" potions, the game leaves you with 1 food which means you're destined to starve (HP drains instead of heals).

Killing every enemy one at a time, very carefully, with healing between each. Have plenty of food. A slow grind.

It has the "enemies don't move until you do" mechanic. Only played the first few levels of Mystery Dungeon but they're very similar. This is probably an out-dated version of the same formula.

>>4718531
Made it to the 3rd area with my tactic of being careful, hoarding health potions, and clearing entire floors to level up. Died once but got a continue for some reason. Very easy to die unexpectedly and I'm running out of health potions.

Hero decked out in Silver Armor, and with lightning sword! The game really likes to be unbalanced until you're catch up, but man is it awful trying to find better gear. Had to use 2 continues and it's always a nail biter if they're gonna give them to you.

It's done.
Extremely short but otherwise a pretty average action/puzzle game.

What shines through however is the chibi art style working surprisingly well with the Ghostbusters humor. Worth a single play for those scenes alone.
Rollan for Genesis.

My Genesis game is Last Battle, apparently considered by critics to be the definitive worst of the 6 western launch titles for the Genesis. L-lucky me.

On a side note, This game seems to bear a striking resemblance to some other intellectual property but I can't quite put my finger on it...

Ah, I can already see why everyone thought this game was shit.

Because it was shit.

After the first two levels the game can randomly become unwinnable depending on what route you take on the map. If you're fighting a ranged enemy then you are just plain fucked. And naturally you can't jump high enough to avoid projectiles, nor can you duck under them.

And the fist boss has greater melee range than you AND spams projectiles.

And no continues unless you use an in game cheat, of course.

Going to take a break and continue later.

Second boss was significantly easier not because he didn't partake in the same bullshit as the first, but because you could do an infinite combo on him by punching him in the dick 5 million times.

Well that game was a serious pile of dogshit. At least it was kind enough to end abruptly after stage 4 when I was expecting a stage 5.

The only positive I can think of for this garbage is that all of the boss death animations are extremely satisfying.

On Day 3, I was unsuccessful at defeating Fatal Labyrinth. Maybe someday I could succeed but the game is so random and unforgiving.

Rolling a new NES game, it happens to be one of my favorites since childhood. I'll be playing levels 1-20 on High Speed to get the true ending.
