Why save the princess when you can make one instead?

Which PM game is /vr/'s favorite? Which endings did you get?

This game is true to life, if you let your daughter be a NEET the whole time she ends up stuck at home

Didn't even notice that it's a pic from this Let's Play:
https://lparchive.org/Princess-Maker-2/

I had a good laugh reading this, but careful that it spoils lots of events and mechanics.

OT, my best ending was general. At least she looks badass.

The best ending I've ever had was her being an adventurer and she ended up being a huge disappointement for every one, including myself after seeing the ending.
Anyway, too bad MIDI on the english DOS translation is so finicky, the OPL2 soundtrack sound great (easily the best use of this chip on IBM PC & clones ever), but so does the MT-32 one. I've tried everything -- softmpu, soundblaster IRQ set to 2, disabling the internal cache, but in the end the music alway ends up stopping at some point. Maybe it's softmpu that stops working. Either way, I think I should try to get an actual MPU-401 unit instead of using some software to immitate it.

I like 2 as that was the one I played the most. I got every ending, as I played the game a lot and considered/explored a lot of options.

>>4699632
I hope to get the results of your findings. My memories of the music came from I think a SoundBlaster 16's OPL music, but I really want to get a MT-32. As the MT-32 was the choice for Japanese game music, it is high on my wishlist, but they have gotten really hard for me to get now that they have broken the 3 digit mark for prices. If an actual MPU-401 is needed, then that just means I am much further away from completing both my 486DX4-100 and J-Win98SE machines. I got a Virba16, AWE32, and Audigy ZX2 for those computers, but I don't think they can match the sound of my memories of the game. Princess Maker 2 is that important to both builds, as it is one of the main reasons to have started them.

If it really needs an actual MPU-401 then it'll be really, really difficult, as those are hard to find and really expensive from what I've read. At least the ones for PC. If I'm not mistaken, the internal C-bus version for PC-98 is easier to find.
>now that they have broken the 3 digit mark for prices.
MT32s prices are ridiculous nowadays.
>I got a Virba16, AWE32, and Audigy ZX2
Does the AWE32 have an actual OPL chip on it? I know the Vibra16 and Audigy don't and that the vibra's opl emulation is pretty bad.

Yeah, it doesn't help that I want one bad that the prices are so high. They look so cool, and the sounds really work for a lot of point & click adventures I like. Also as mentioned, the Roland sounds tend to be the basis of a lot of my favorite console games' soundtracks.

As for the AWE32, it says CT3980 for its model number. It does have a wavetable header, but I have not experimented with any wavetables. If worse comes to worse, I know my uncle still hoards the Gateway 2000 P5-75 that I played the game extensively on, and I can probably salvage the sound card from it (which I think is a Sound Blaster 16). I just have to make some room as I'd probably want its 17" CRT monitor too.

The wavetable thing is not that important when you get external MIDI hardware as it'll alway sound superior. Appropriate FM synthesis hardware is on the other hand more important when it comes to older games, as OPL emulation on soundcards is pretty much garbage. Seems like your model of AWE32 does have actual FM synthesis hardware though.

So how do the games compare? Are the Steam ports the only ways to play 1 and 3 in English? Anyone have any impressions of 4, 5 or the SNES game?

A google search for the CT3980 did lead to a link saying it was OPL3, but not an authentic Yamaha chip. I guess I will have to put it into the 486 to see if it sounds right. I can hear the song in my head already, so if it is off I think I will know. Thanks, you did save me from attempting to see what the fuss is about these wavetable addon boards.

This is pretty close to how I remembered it sounding:
https://youtu.be/yxxJRP6eVsE

But the MT-32 does magic to the tracks too:
https://youtu.be/a6wIyC4_sMg

That's how much I love the PM2 game, if I had he funds I would get the MIDI devices just to groove to the game.
>>4701176
I think there may be English patches out there, but I'm not too keen on the scene. I have the SNES 1 and PS2's 5, but I've not tried them yet. Only ones I've played are 1-3, and I favor 2 probably because I played it the most.

OPL3-compatible chips (not OPL3 emulating ones) do sound good. Many soundblaster 16 and compatible cards use Crystal chips instead of Yamaha ones, and they're pretty good. Cards with an actual OPL3 whip usually sound better though (they're less noisy) unless they cheapened on the DAC and audio path.
The SB16 I use on my 486 PC use a crystal chip. Man does it sound great. It's such a great improvement from the ensoniq PCI soundcard I used when I first tried to make a DOS setup (it couldn't even reproduce PM2's music).
