There's only one way to go "back". And that is to get your life in order to the point where you can sit down and play video games without being distracted about the rest of your life.

This is why the notion of video games as an escape are a falsehood. You cannot run from your life to play video games and then fully enjoy them. Only when your mind is clear can you sit down and give them your full attention to make the most of them. That's one major reason why you enjoyed them more as a child.

Having children of your own is a good idea too. That's how you get back the ability to imagine again. That was what made games so good as a child. You were playing while you were playing the game. As an adult it is difficult to put yourself into play mode again.

OP is right - the 1990s were the best decade. Yeah, the 80s had cool music and fashion and produced some great action movies. But I think in years to come, when our children squat in the ruins of civilisation eating dog food round a camp fire, they'll listen to the few surviving elders tell of a legendary past, before the twin towers fell, before ISIS, before Afghanistan and Iraq II. A time when the internet was new and exciting. When 3D graphics were still impressive and innovative. When SEGA still existed. When Clinton was in charge and the economy was doing just fine, after the Berlin Wall fell but before people started to worry about Islamic Terrorism and Climate Change instead. The goddamn nineties were so fucking beautiful.

Idunno man. I mean, I liked my youth and I'm obviously a sucker for nostalgia, but I don't get all mushy and sad about the past being the past.

Think of it this way, back in 1999 you were probably wishing you were old enough to appreciate things you were too young to in 1990. Don't spend your present chasing around in your head and mourning a long passed memory that gets more and more rose tinted each time you look back.

its gone bro, be glad it happened and be excited for something new to happen.

desu i have the opposite problem, time doesn't feel linear anymore. it feels like we're living in an amorphous time-blob, where instead of linear progress things are just a bunch of stuff that happened.
which is basically what post-modernity is, the end of the modernist metanarrative of eternal progress. what's weird is how long it took to die out totally - in real political terms, it died in the 1970s, but for vidya it only really ended in the last generation even if we were getting diminishing returns. the internet has been a slow slide, but with the creation of a near-universal meme culture, the same is true. everyone knows steamed hams now, who needs in-jokes?

and then there's the constant remakes and remixes, because when there's no progress you can't create "the new". this is it, settle in for the end of history. even when things seem to be changing, progressing or regressing it's all just a spectacle to keep you entertained and distracted. nothing is actually moving, there is no compelling story to our times.

You know what we will tell our children here in Russia about 1990s?
Suddenly, there was nothing nomore. The union fell, and the civil wars at the east and the south resulted in a hellish violence and tens of thousands of refugees. Tanks stormed the capital, twice, and then the war on separatists started, which continued until every general and politician who started it died of old age, but it is still going.
Meanwhile the gangs became the real government in the cities, waging almost tribal-like wars for the control over commieblock streets (i shit you not, it happened). At the same time, the money were practically reduced to paper and replaced with pyramid investment documents which soon fell too.
And looking back, the shit was insane BUT
There were a glimpse of light, an escapism from the nightmare around. Chinese bootleg Famiclones and Contra, SEGA Mega Drive and Ultimate Mortal Combat 3. And "Dendy - a new reality" TV show. It gave us hope for a better tomorrow.
Goddamn 90s were a weird time, but how good they were.

As an adult, it's hypothetically easier to go back than you'd think.

Basically, my plan is to build up a nice collection of games from the 4th, 5th and 6th gens, a dvd collection of all my favorites and store them in what i have dubbed my "boy-cave".

It's not a man-cave, because it's not all about sports, beer, sports, pool and sports. Instead, it's all the boyhood interests i couldn't let go of.

Phase one is coming along slowly, but by the end of this year, i'll be there in that boy-cave. And to get the wife to go along with this, i am letting her go crazy collecting crafting stuff and helping her remodel a little. And by "letting" i mean i just go with it and dont argue...

Anyway, phase two is to set aside a block of time every day when i go do my thing. After the kids are in bed, and before i go settle in for the night myself. Watch movies, play games, listen to music, draw the weird shit i draw, etc. All bets are OFF!

I'll walk into that room, and it'll be 1998 again (unless i fire up the pa2, then it'll be 2001) and no one can fucking stop me!

And yeah, my boy cave will be shoved into the smallest room in the house, with the smallest TV, and all sound played through headphones. But god damnit, it'll work!

So the 90s were great because you were/are too stupid to realize all the terrible shit that was going on at the time? It was Clinton who started the trend of our government becoming a reality TV show. It was Clinton who started the meme of bombing random who countries to distract from troubles at home (he created the whole wag the dog meme). It was during the 90s when automation started to really kick in and you could no longer live a comfy life by taking a job at a local factory right out of high school. It was the 90s when Islamic Terrorism started infecting our lives. It was the 90s when the environmental movement really started to gain traction and actively encouraging government intrusion into our private lives. It was the 90s when both the illegal and single mother population started to boom. It was the economic policies of the 90s and people embracing the cheap housing meme that led to the downturn in the 2000s. Nearly everything bad about the 2000s had their origins in the 90s. It's time to grow up and take off the glasses son.

Time doesn't exist. Time is just a way that humans have of perceiving the changing form of atoms as they exist in different states within the same space. If you place an apple in front of you, then move it slightly, then move it back to the exact position it was to begin with, did the apple go back in time? No, you'd just say you moved the apple. But what if the apple represented every single atom in the universe? What if moving it represented changing the position of those atoms back to the way they were in 1998? Would we have gone back in time, or would we have simply changed the arrangement of atoms?

The point I'm making is, it's silly to wish you could go "back" to anywhere. There is no "back". The only thing separating you from living how you did in "the good old days" is you. I can still play my PS1, I can still watch the same shows I used to enjoy, I can still make the same food, I can still do whatever the fuck I want. Sure, the world around you changes, but it only impacts as you as much as you let it. The world has always sucked and it always will, it's up to YOU to carve out your own little piece of heaven. Failure to do so isn't a reflection on how the world has changed, but how you have changed.

Yes, you dumb bastard. You think I don't know all the terrible shit going on in the 1990s? Of course I fucking do, but this is a thread about nostalgia. And it's not just nostalgia. If you lived in a developed country in the 1990s it was a fucking great time. A house of cards it may have been, but economies were fucking booming, including the nascent digital economy. And videogames in particular were peaking. Yeah, Clinton was a sleazy fuck and bombed a country just to distract from his sleaze, but I'd take that over an endless, pointless land invasion of some shithole desert backwater that black holes dollars like water going down a drain. I'd take ethnic cleansing in former Yugoslavia (no offence, kosovan anons) over planes crashing into the pentagon and WTC with the president asleep at the wheel, any day.

This right there. Everything good about the 90s was a holdover from the vastly superior 80s and after 93 everything took a hard nosedive from music to movies to culture in general. Videogames only stayed good for longer because Japs and western nerds that made them were deaf to cultural changes and were still influenced by 80s culture.

Compared to the shitshow that is now, the 90s seem great, but they were already the beginning of the end. Music especially got incredibly bad, grunge, boy bands, girl bands, techno, dance music with shitty rap parts, it was a fucking horror show. Same for movies which all had to have the N64 style CGI and started to all go for PG and PG-13 ratings. Gone were the days of the R-rated comedies and action movies of the 80s.

Yeah that is the 90s in a nutshell. I'm late Gen-X and loved the 90s but cannot deny that a big reason was blissful ignorance about what was going on outside the US.

For example, my first thought when I heard someone say that a plane had crashed into the World Trade Center was that it was some crazy guy in a 3-seater or something. Meanwhile my more aware friend immediately knew it was muslim terrorists.

on that note, it's crazy how kids can find solace in things and push reality out. i was a refugee in the 90s with a traumatized mother and a missing father and constantly facing deportation, but just the memory of religiously reading every single word and staring at every single illustration in my cousin's secret of mana guidebook paints the era in a golden color.

No, it's really not a problem at all. All you have to do is be mildly good looking and learn how to be charming. You don't know this because you've never had sex, but once you've charmed a woman, she will worship you so long as you remain equal parts distant and affectionate. Life of Kings

I knew the owner of an agency that would send out girls to take care of old people, take them to hospital for checks, staying nights etc.. One day I started doing a couple jobs for him (so much for qualifications right?), I knew him from when I did compute repair, so I joked around hey I can do that if you need help and wtf he takes me seriously so I did some driving old ladies to hospitals in the region for 15 euros per trip , it was shit deal I knew it.

Eventually one lady wanted night presence, they warned me "prepare yourself for HELL" they said she had a nervous breakdown and every woman they sent would turn down the job after a month in horror. House was a mess, garbage everywhere, literally crazy tier stuff but honestly it didnt impress me at all.

I cut them out of the deal after a couple weeks and have been keeping her to myself since then, they were giving me pennies while bleeding her dry. Fuck them.

She turns out to be a real lady, caring and educated, and cute looking too (thank god). She loves me having intelligent hobbies and wants me as her son/lover and doesn't mind me not working, takes me thrifting every time I want, buys me craploads of retro PCs and components.Shes such a frail lady its hard not to get attached too and its not in my intention to hurt her we've been very transparent about what we want from each other and its working so far.

Btw advice dont think she stays with you just for the dicking its not like they cant get another tomboy with their money if they want. Dont manwhore while youre with her if you want it to last never embarass her saying shit like she pays me etc dont be a tomboy or a whore be their son with privileges its better in the long run. Its been 3 years now im 29 shes 60 doing well so far.

Having children is also a double edged sword since yes you can help them discover the games you loved as a kid but at the same time they are a huge responsibility and take up a large chunk of time to raise and care for.

I'm posting less because even I can no longer stem the flood of posters like you - and presumably him since I can't imagine why my post about the realities of independent film making could possibly so offend a person not badly deluded into thinking their little "movie" they're currently filming in the form of 3 minute youtube clips could be a nationally released 2018 academy award nominated film.

Now we have literal /r9k/ fuckwits attempting to normalize even standardize their self-entombment validated by a bunch of people from countries where they lack the right to pursue happiness. Observing that process IS kind of depressing but it just reminds me how lucky I am to have the life I have.

He does. Today is his birthday (and happy late 5th birthday to /vr/ as well) and I'm letting him watch Hello Neighbor and Bendy music videos his mom doesn't approve of while she's at work and I clean up the house. I usually don't do that but she's getting to be extremely pregnant with our second and I want her to be in the best possible mood for his in-town pizza party at the local arcade today before the trampoline party this weekend in the city with the in-laws and cousins and relocated friends. My nerd friend's nerd kids are coming today. His 6 year old has an obvious crush on mine maybe he'll get his first real smooch but at the very least he'll get to feed tokens to games until he's sick of it and has enough ticket redemption junk to fill his trash can. I'm hoping so. My mom is baking the cake and she's been having a pretty rough time. Her 14 year old dog she's had since my dad and grandma were still alive died Monday night and I stayed up all night down there suffering with them through the whole process. She's been doting on him completely for like three months as his health slowly failed at a cost to her relationship with my son that had been very comfortable, run back and forth between the houses style and now that the dog is gone she's realizing that like video games dogs will not carry on a legacy of you. I'm sure they'll grow back together, hopefully even before the new baby gets here at the end of May but I was a bit worried her sadness would color the party so I'm very glad the nerd kids will be there - and so is he, for simpler reasons.

Probably the "I'm a much better parent than that to my vinyl figs" anon will have something to say about this as well.

>OP is right - the 1990s were the best decade
Didn't we discover that OP's pic is from 2000 at the absolute earliest? That gold N64 controller is the giveaway. They weren't widely available until 2000, alongside Majora's Mask. Before that, the only way to get them was through Nintendo Power (in which case it would have a black emblem on it celebrating 100 issues of Nintendo Power, which it doesn't) or it would have to be one of the uber-rare 1000 given away as a prize in a Mario Kart tournament. So either that kid was super lucky, or this isn't the '90s anymore. Also that poster on the far right is from Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged me, which was released Summer of 1999, so at the very earliest, this is 1999.

It would be nice to find something else in the picture to help date it, but I'm coming up blank. Maybe something on the Playstation box? I'm not too familiar with them...

calender decades start with the 0 years and end with the 9 years, but cultural decades don't really. there's a reason we're speaking of the long 19th century and short 20th century too.

even if that pic is from 2000, it still has a heavily 90s feel to it. in fact, i'd argue it's more 90s than, say, the year 1994 when people were only halfway into the decade. shit's in flux, man.

Hmmm.

I'm late to the party, but...

I get the OP is being hyperbolic, but here's the problem with nostalgiafagging: imagine if I presented a dank meme from 2001 to you as though it's still funny. I'd be an idiot. Why? Because nostalgia glasses exaggerate how good things were.

You know the "Sonic was never good" thread. In fact, Sonic 2 isn't as feature-rich as Sonic Mania, therefore in SOME sense it IS an inferior game--and remember Mania reuses OLD levels.

So if you have good feelings from things you're nostalgic about, fine, but if you pretend old things are something they aren't and weren't, you're just going to become a moron.

>> No.4697785

I'm just going to say it, fuck the people saying its unhealthy to look back to the past and enjoy nostalgia. If you look at it objectively, thinking about the past and getting your inspiration from it is one of the most healthy things you can do. Drawing strength, enjoyment, inspiration, etc from the past is great. I am a wage-slave and I work a standard 9-5 on the weekdays, you know what gets me through my day? Thinking about how good a game like MegaManX was from various different perspectives such as gameplay, OST, themes, narrative, etc. Even now I am revisiting old 80s/90s tier anime and trying to find out if its truly just nostalgia or anime/games from those times were objectively better. We teach history in schools because there is a benefit to it, we can learn from it and better ourselves from it.

There are people who say wanting to go back to a simpler time is somehow unhealthy. Life is too short to worry about the present or the future, just keep things as simple as possible. If you are fond of a certain era its not simply because you just "grew up" in that era, its the fact you can compare the culture and society of that era to now and you objectively see a down curve.

tl;dr: Its healthy to be a nostalgiafag, don't ever stop doing it.
