Honestly, EB, FF4-6, CT and the soulblazer games are the only 16 bit Jrpgs that didn't feel like empty shells. The concept of the MOTHER games is intriguing from an artistic standpoint considering who the creator is, his motivations for making the series, what he aimed to achieve with the games, etc. The backlash against the idea of the game being Hipster is just as trite as the endless praise and circlejerking any mention of this game causes, especially on this board. The LttP vs. LA and EB shaming leads me to believe a lot of people here are younger than 22 and have paranoiac fantasies of tumblr takeovers and that 2009 anti-hipster thought process which renders them almost nothing more but a nerdy, ambivalent philistine. “Hipster” is a term co-opted for use as a meaningless pejorative in order to vaguely call someone else’s authenticity into question and, by extension, claim authenticity for yourself.

It serves no conversational function and imparts no information, save for indicating the opinions and preferences of the speaker.

Meanwhile, a market myth has sprung up around the term, as well as a cultural bogeyman consisting of elusive white 20-somethings who wear certain clothes (but no one will agree on what), listen to certain music (no one can agree on this either), and act a certain way (you’ve probably sensed the pattern on your own).

You can’t define what “that kind of behavior or fashion or lifestyle” actually is, nor will you ever be able to. That’s because you don’t use “hipster” to describe an actual group of people, but to describe a fictional stereotype that is an outlet for literally anything that annoys you.

The twist, of course, is that if it weren’t for your own insecurities, nothing that a “hipster” could do or wear would ever affect you emotionally. But you are insecure about your own authenticity - “Do I wear what I wear because I want to? Do I listen to my music because I truly like it? I’m certainly not like those filthy hipsters!” - so you project those feelings.

Suffice it to say, no one self-identifies as a hipster; the term is always applied to an Other, to separate the authentic Us from the inauthentic, “ironic” Them.

tl;dr: if you believe hipsters exist, you are a plebeian.

Not the guy you responded to, but I actually don't really like the Lufia games. I think they're okay, but not my kind of game. They feel very generic. And while I do like the Dragon Quest games (nothing gets me in a mood for adventuring quite like them), I honestly do think EarthBound is better than them. The feel of the game, the atmosphere, the quirky humor, the music; all of these things are what make EarthBound one of my favorite RPGs. It's certainly flawed in several regards and I won't say it's God's gift to man; it isn't. A lot of what it does do well appeals to me, though.

That said, anyone paying more than $20 for any SNES game is fucking retarded. As somebody who is a fan of the game series as a whole (including the first game which I think is alright but was pretty much improved upon in every way with the sequel), it pisses me off that you have these hipster fucks who are inflating the price for LOLNERDCRED or whatever the fuck.

Fuck them.
Fuck them for thining that price is reasonable for a 10+ year old game and fuck them for increasing the price to retarded levels.
Fuck them for parroting how great this game is only to raise everyone who plays it expectations to unreasonable levels.

I just want a working copy of EarthBound to play on my SNES. Mostly for collector reasons and partially because I like to play games on the actual systems if I can.

>It's not that good of a game

What are things people never said about Earthbound until /vr/?

A game gets its pricing from several different reasons. Growing fandom and obscurity were the reasons for Earthbound's raising price. You have people who own the game since release who loved it and won't part, you have others who have heard about it via Smash Brothers or from sites like 4chan, and then you have those who emulate it and want to own a copy themselves. There aren't enough copies for all of that. Not even 150k copies of the game sold, now think, if 1 in every 10 Smash Brothers player wanted to own a piece of that, you begin to see a reason why it's priced as so.

Plebeian is a term co-opted for use as a meaningless pejorative in order to vaguely call someone elses authenticity into question and, by extension, claim authenticity for yourself.

It serves no conversational function and imparts no information, save for indicating the opinions and preferences of the speaker.

Meanwhile, a market myth has sprung up around the term, as well as a cultural bogeyman consisting of elusive white 20-somethings who wear certain clothes (but no one will agree on what), listen to certain music (no one can agree on this either), and act a certain way (youve probably sensed the pattern on your own).

You cant define what that kind of behavior or fashion or lifestyle actually is, nor will you ever be able to. Thats because you dont use plebeian to describe an actual group of people, but to describe a fictional stereotype that is an outlet for literally anything that annoys you.

The twist, of course, is that if it werent for your own insecurities, nothing that a plebeian could do or wear would ever affect you emotionally. But you are insecure about your own authenticity - Do I wear what I wear because I want to? Do I listen to my music because I truly like it? Im certainly not like those filthy plebeians ! - so you project those feelings.

Suffice it to say, no one self-identifies as a plebeian ; the term is always applied to an Other, to separate the authentic Us from the inauthentic, ironic Them.

tl;dr: if you believe plebeians exist, you are a plebeian.
