I mean, shit, you might as well just rip out all the carpeting and burn it, put in new carpet altogether. I come back to Doom very often, but recently I've also been playing Simcity 3000, among many other things.
Doom is just fundamentally really good, as vanilla, but there are also a lot of good levelsets, combine that with mods and you can have a whole lot of fresh gameplay.

Also I don't think weakness or flaw is bad, you can still be badass, look at Die Hard, every single encounter is a desperate fight for John McClane's life, he's terrified, and he gets beat up and bloodied and injured, but he triumphs and survives.

He's badass because he risks himself each time, he pushes on against all the odds and all the hurt, he has to use all of his smarts to avoid death and to achieve what he sets out to do, and he wins eventually.
The movies became notably less exciting and cool later when they made him jaded and boring.

I can see why you'd feel that way.
They say Doom 4 wasn't a reboot, but I don't agree on that, it's so radically different from the original games in tone and gameplay that I don't think it matches at all, kind of like Doom 3 being a reboot.

At most, Doom 4 is kind of based on Doom 64, which in itself I feel is completely different from the classics in tone.
I don't dislike Doomslayer, by the way, I think he's fine, but he's different from OG Doomguy.

It feels nice to finally reach a version of a mod you can call final. It's satisfying to be honest. Granted there will probably still be balance patches and the occasional new content update, but having something you can call final is always useful for helping ease the mind from having to maintain the mod constantly. We can all reach that point if we try hard enough, and it will always feel good to be able to take off your mind from whatever youre working on. Besides, getting to a point where you can only start adding more useless junk, unneeded stuff and bloating the mod itself is unhealthy, in my opinion atleast.

Pretty much a straight 50/50 split for me. On the one hand, it had great graphics, great gameplay, and was a really good way to revitalize an older franchise for a modern audience. Unfortunately, it had needless story elements, literal shit-tier multiplayer, and snapmap, while fun for people who don't make mods like myself, is not replacement for true modding capabilities. As a whole, it's a solid game by 2018 standards, but it will never live up to the early games.

My personal headcanon is that Doomguy went to hell at the end of Doom 2, fucked shit up for a long while (time may run at a different speed in Hell, such that his time spent in Hell was very long while time in in the Earth realm ran at regular speed, so not that much time passed, perhaps a few decades. Alternatively, it was a very long time, but somehow Hell affects his aging differently/he got powers or some bullshit), and then got captured and imprisoned by a Hell that was so afraid of him at that point they had to unite to stop him. This leads to Doom 4, where his body was found in Hell from the new gateway experiments.

I liked a good handful of the maps. guns were cool and fun to shoot, some enemy designs are really badass as well. I only wished they had taken as many risks with the level/encounter design to make the gameplay feel less scripted overall what with the lockdowns and all.

on general terms I'm happy about the impact it had in the community and how well received it was. it's still nowhere near bad for a modern shooter, in fact it kinda sits at a level that pretty much none of its contemporaries are.

The Trooper is pretty fun so far. The variety of weapons is neat, they're all satisfying and well animated. But the HUD and the weapon system give me a headache. I understand what they are going for, with having different weapon categories you switch weapons between with custom keybinds. Infact, when it works well, it's great. Being able to have a designated weapon for each category without having to scroll through a crap-ton of different guns is awesome. But setting up all the keybinds is a pain. And don't get me started on the HUD. It looks neat, but I want someone who hasn't played the mod to look at everything on the right and explain to me what each of the numbers means.

I think it handled upgrades kind of well considering they were actually substantial.

Looking at Shadow Warrior, it had upgrades, but they only really made a worthwhile difference on some of the guns, while in Doom 4, they do all sorts of things.
Like the machinegun can be upgraded to shoot mini rockets, or to have a scope for long range shots, the shotgun can have a automatic burst fire, or a grenade launcher, the rocket launcher can have an upgrade to detonate projectiles midair or to fire a homing burst of rockets.

Like a lot of these things radically change how you use the weapon.

Well, I'll give him a point in that Doom had a mix of fast paced themes and slow atmospheric themes, some maps were spookier, some maps were more action.

Doom 4 does mostly metal music, and doesn't really do much 'spooky' levels where you skulk around in the dark. I'm ok with that for what the game is, but it's not quite as varied in gameplay as the original game is, in that manner.
I never liked the PSX or 64 music, by the way.

Beat Quake about a year ago, loved it. Tried soem of the expansion packs, and it was all jsuut zombie soldiers with metal score. Seemed not as interesting. Do they pick up?

Play Quake 2 on PSX. I'm going to get chewed out for this, but it's better than the PC version. Here's the thing, guys like that are typically going to tell you how shit console shooters are, and they're going to heap praise on PC shooters like no tomorrow. It's not that PC shooters don't deserve said praise, but good shooters DO exist on console. A guy like that is going to take one look at a game like Quake 2 on PSX, see that it lacks online and mods, and immediately write it off as garbage because it lacks the "basic requirements", so to speak, of what he believes a game needs to be considered good. For me, those things are nice, but they come second to good base gameplay and atmosphere. Quake 2 on PSX has that. The gameplay is more satisfying and fun, the environments are more colorful and atmospheric, and as a whole, it's just a more enjoyable game to play. Some will disagree I'm sure, but if you have the ability, play it. I play everything from Perfect Dark to Quake 3 Arena, and I think it's a ton of fun.

Honestly I think there are a lot of good console ports. One that I own is Return to Castle Wolfenstein for the PS2. The framerate and graphics are good and the controls feel smooth, they've done a really good job with. Of course you can't play it in 4K or 60fps but it's still good.

Yeah. The only way to kill them is to inflict pain on them several times (they have infinite health, or it's so high it might as well be), and each time you do so they fuck off to the edge of GZDoom space, or nearby corpses if those are in their path first. They can raise entire groups of enemies at once, will spawn sentient flames that can either explode you or revive enemies, and when you do kill one, some time later it'll get the last laugh by reviving enemies that are near you. The only relief is that they drop a megasphere on death, which will make you effectively immortal until you change your armor.

I hate archviles so god damn much.

this may result in chaingunners doing higher damage more often as they can roll 12 or 15 where the player would roll 10 or 15. this also gets compounded when you consider vanilla doom's not-quite-perfect prng, which has a slight tendency to roll higher numbers more often than it should.

however, chaingunners also have a lower rate of fire than the player. their chaingun has a rate of fire of i think 5 tics or maybe 4.5 (4 for one round, 5 alternating). i think the real reason they seem so much more deadly than you do when you use the same weapon is simply down to doom's health scale. you have a measly 100 health, and you're up against enemies that are closer to 300-400 on average. when you're tearing into a crowd of zombiemen, the chaingun certainly doesn't feel weak at all.

The chunky, pixelated goodness of software rendering and the proper lighting. Quakespasm can't really come close to the original look. Even with gl_texturemode set to 1 and frame interpolation turned off, it doesn't look anything like the original.

That's what I've been doing for the classic feel, but then there's the soundtrack issue as I mentioned. Also I don't think WinQuake uses SDL so ports that preserve the original mouse movement feel pretty terrible. Not limited to Quake either - Shadow Warrior Classic movement feels terrible as do all of the original Build engine games without modern source ports. Duke World Tour has vomit inducing mouse look because it still uses the original method.

Quake just looks wrong with the rendering offered in modern source ports. Even without texture filtering and anti-aliasing turned off globally, it just looks like a shittier version of the low poly shooters that follow in the subsequent years.

Just need a port with WinQuake's aesthetics and the "it just werks" ease of use of Quakespasm/Mark V. I don't see why it can't just upscale 320x240 to preserve the chunky pixels. I think that's what Chocolate Doom is doing on higher resolutions and that's what Mark V's WinQuake lets you do too.

Actually, Universal Gibs works well with some of the bone enemies. You can gib their corpses and have bones explode everywhere.

Also after tearing my way through some WADSMOOSH and with the Sequential Episode mod, I realize that getting the Super Shotgun on Doom 2's MAP02 isn't so weird anymore after you've been through several consecutive episodes and need something new to eviscerate hellspawn with. The enemy counts are higher than anything prior besides Doom 1 Episode 4 and it makes for a good mixup.

Doom 2 is like 1/3rd good maps, 1/3rd mediocre maps, and 1/3rd bad maps. Most of the good ones are in the first third of the game, then it quickly goes fucking all over the place in terms of quality, rarely becoming really good again.

What made Doom 2 great isn't the levels, it's all the assets it gave people to use.

The rest of DN3D is decent mechanically, groups of 6-8 suicide drones are just absolute shit level design. I remember playing Lunar Apocalypse as a kid on Piece of Cake and thinking it was good but on Come Get Some it's just ~45 minutes worth of closet/ambush traps filled with those annoying fuckers and not much else. You can focus fire them or bait them into pipebombs and tripmines but they're never fun to fight any way you try to spin it.

Even if you cheese/skip over the closet traps, drones are omnipresent in every Lunar Apocalypse level and are the same sort of pain-in-the-ass roadblock as a Pain Elemental in that they're no fun to fight but demand your attention any time one appears. It all depends. I have absolutely no problem booking it when it looks like a shitshow, and it can actually feel pretty tense when I know that I have to run, but here I didn't feel like I had a choice in the matter because I accidentally stepped in the teleporter and was then locked out. Giving at least the illusion of choice (like having no real option but running but still leaving it up to the player to decide that) can make a big difference.
