What is the appeal of this game?

>> No.4679270

It's more interesting with realistic, diverse fighting styles than Super Hadouken Simulator Rehash #9001 and other weeaboo anime fighters.

>> No.4679310

Complex, realistic fighting styles. Yu Suzuki actually went around to speak to martial artists when thinking up the game.

Not much, its a very shallow game, its only real appeal was it used 3D polygon graphics in a time when almost all other fighting games used sprites, obviously as more games moved into 3D VF appeal died off pretty quickly.

Except the VF series is one of the most technical fighters out there. And it manages to do it with a lower button requirement.

Fake news: the post

>> No.4679829

The Virtua Fighter series as a whole is one I've enjoyed for decades now. It's simple to pick up, with only three buttons, yet insanely difficult to master. The control is so tight and feels flawless. Comparing VF2 to Tekken 2 or even Tekken 3 and VF2 just felt like a deeper game with 10 amazing characters that all played differently compared to the dozens of characters in the Tekken series that were so similar to one another.

It wasn't until VF4 on the PS2 that most Western players got into the series.

It has the closest thing to perfect balance that ever happened in fighting games (every fighter is equally viable), it is an incredibly simple game, yet it takes months to master a single character. It doesn't have the retarded fast crossup/overhead logic and 128hit tag team super combos that other fighters do; instead it relies on much more simpler scissors/rock/paper mechanism that is nonetheless equally complex due to the amount of moves each character has.

In other words it runs on a logic closer to real world fighting: you have to know when to throw which move. For this you have to practice every move a thousand times, so you can pull it out by reflex by instinct. And you have to not only be faster than the other player, but also be capable of reading their moves, to know the perfect counter before the opponent throws a punch.

I just hate how the game became a juggle simulator by VF5. In VF2, especially after the 2.1 update, the most juggles you could do were 2-3 hits, in some sequels you can hit a guy lying on the ground with a chest-level double palm thrust.

>>4679842
>The hitting sound effects.
Also this, holy fuck. The smash sound when you do a roundhouse kick is so satisfying.

Try VF Kids if you can. It has even better sound (compared to Saturn VF2...), higher speed, cleaner voices, hit sparks, and an instant replay that makes the game feel like a hong kong action flick. Whenever you do a signature move, the game replays it 2-3 times. Makes Akira's counters ten times as satisfying.

you're the type of person who probably complains about the uneven terrain in 3. Guess nuance isn't so good when you launch a character uphill and it makes your combo incomplete, fucking crybaby.

It's a 3d fighting game.

That's it. That's the appeal. It's a novelty by itself that was enough to entice people to play at the time. The first Virtua Fighter capitalized on this appeal even more, but Virtua Fighter 2 was also a good game on top of the 3d gimmick.

Nice webm from a broken emulator.

>just a dumbed down fighting game with no nuance
No, because it does differentiate between low/mid/high attacks, and from 3 on onwards it also counts half circle and full circle moves (that can counter dodges), and you can hit from behind too just like in other games so crossups works too.

However VF prioritizes offense, so you don't rely on nuances, you rely on knowing which move is the right attack at all times, or which feint is the right one to confuse your enemy so they do the wrong move that you can counter.

>a very shallow game with weak neutral
Please elaborate on what you mean by this.

The appeal of the game is the precision. I can't really qualify it any more than that except to say that, if I had to play one game in which to fight Death himself to save the world from oblivion, I'd choose Virtua Fighter 2, not because it's the game I'm best at, but because there's absolutely no cheese in it to exploit at all; a fair fight is a fair fight.

Retard. Except for the first game, Virtua Fighter is arguably the most technical and skill-based fighting game series ever made. And I'm saying this as a HARDCORE Tekken fan back in the day. Used to be a regular at Southern Hills Golfland where legends like Valle and John Choi used to play every week. VF is the real deal. But it's not for everyone because it requires a lot of commitment. And honestly there's no point in playing the game unless you live in Japan and have access to arcades, because hardly no one plays it outside of Japan.

Fighter's Destiny 2 is another very technical 3D Fighter with equally generic characters, but since it's an n64 game people are comfortable calling it mediocre

It's one of the first Saturn games I owned. I don't regret buying it, it was always fun.

>> No.4685531

When the arcade version was released, it was far and away the technically most impressive video game in the world. First saw it in Vegas at the time and it just blew me away (60fps animation that moved like fuckin' silk. Not to mention the complexity of those animations, like characters stumbling, Shun's drunken style, etc). Also played Tekken there (which was released a month after VF2) and it looked and played like shit in comparison. Tekken 2 really didn't gain much ground, either (still ran at 30fps, with less impressive animation and sound).

And as this poster said, a great majority of those in the fighting game community do consider the series one of the deepest fighters there is, if the not the deepest. I won't speak on that, since I'm just a medium level fighting game enthusiast, but VF always felt more substantial than Tekken (rote 10 hit combos), DOA (easy counter system), and Soul Blade.
