I basically did all my weeb-shopping in Radio Kaikan and one of the Sofmaps, but that was for gunpla and fiddly Gashapon shit. The oldskool stall parts of Akihabara do have some old game shit in there for cheap. I meant to go back and pick up a 1st gen DS for 5 bucks but forgot about it. Looked like it only needed a battery. NESiCA kind of ruined the arcade scene since basically all of the arcades just use those for anything that isn't Dissidia/rhythm or whatever weird bullshit is hot right now, so if you've seen one arcade, you know what basically 80% of the lineup is in any arcade in the country, even the smoke filled mom&pop ones in other areas.

What I saw at the various TRADER stores seemed half-reasonable, half bullshit. Used SFC minis for under retail, but GBAMicros for 120 or more. They had stuff going back to at least the MD/SFC but I didn't look at the prices. Wii stuff is obviously dirt cheap because everyone and their mother bought one. Picked up a like-new Classic Controller Pro for like 10 bucks.

Weirdest thing I saw was the 2nd hand figure market. You can rent out like a 2x2 box and fill it with all your shit you want to sell, and I imagine the store takes a cut. Lot of that now.

Too busy sightseeing everywhere else.

Dude MOS Burger is one of the best hamburger chains on the planet. You are right their pizza is terrible. First Kitchen is mediocre (humorously abbreviated as ファキン sounds like fucking) but their French fry flavors are good especially the burnt butter soy sauce flavor. I was there a couple months ago, the prices on everything were ridiculous. I ended up just taking some photos in the game shops and going on my merry way.
Also I felt bad for the employees who have to listen to a blaring cacaphony of game demos and music running simultaneously all day long, it's like the store owners deliberately want to create David Lynch style audio dysphoria. No wonder they all kill themselves.
Lastly, the French were almost always very rude in the small aisles, they would never move to let others pass by them. This happened many times, not sure what's up with them. Inb4 "you're fat," I'm a skellington.

>existing consoles
Loading up on Saturn, DC, and PCE games.

>new hardware
Some combination of the following with rough order of priority:
>Wonderswan Swancrystal
>Saturn Virtual On stick
>PCE Coregrafx for a SSS3 build
>Neo Geo CDZ/AES
>Model 2 Saturn to act as backup to my Model 1
>NTSC-J Dreamcast

If you have the suitcase space, buying bulky and expensive-to-ship stuff when in Japan is an absolute must since it will let you dodge shipping fees. That's how I snagged my boxed Model 1 Saturn for half the going price for a comparable machine on eBay.

You need a national ID now I think, as the machine asks you to flash it some kind of smart card. Same for the liquor ones too now. That said, you can walk in to basically any store and buy the same shit. They're all numbered too, so you can just say "Number X please" and they'll get it for you. They don't even ask you your age; the touchscreen just asks you to confirm you're of age.

That said, they're cracking down hard on smoking outside nowadays. Most towns limit it to some storefronts (like 7-11) and little sort-of walled off areas. Indoor smoking is still mostly cool though, oddly enough.

I lived there 5 years on an off and I never needed an ID to buy tobacco or alcohol. You only need a TASPO (portmanteau of Tobacco Passport) to buy cigarettes and beer from vending machines. Otherwise you can go into any regular store. If you do get IDed though you can show your passport or another form of ID that says you are 20 or older. Again I’m a white guy and I was never IDed they always touched the ID check button for me.

>>4675556
The crack down is mostly in Tokyo and high pedestrian traffic areas near major train stations, so any where outside that you’re fine. When I lived in a company dorm in the countryside you could smoke anywhere but ironically there were plenty of signs that said 立ち小便禁止 (peeing is prohibited). Then again there were also signs that said “watch your head because of falling pisgeon shit” so they worry about some things that may be strange to foreigners. But what’s the point because you can smoke in almost any cafe, bar, karaoke box, arcade, pachinko parlor or restaurant and if you can’t smoke directly in the main room many places have a special smoking area; though some restaurants have a no smoking policy during peak hours when many students or families would visit the place. The smoking rooms at Narita were like heaven for someone like me who had to wait 2 hours for a flight and then take a 15 hour flight back to the east coast.

American McDonalds doesn’t even hold a flame to the quality that you get at the Japanese ones. Like you said I’ve always had fresh (as fresh as McDonalds could be) burgers and fries there, even in rural areas. The only reason to go to McDonalds there is for either the teriyaki burger or the seasonal Tsukimi burger, even though I prefer First Kitchen’s egg burger. Then again you can’t even compare a good solid Sasebo burger to any of the chains stuff, sometimes they’re even better than stuff I’ve gotten at burger restaurants in the US.

Don’t apologize it’s all good man. You should defiantly check out they have some good Japanese only brands (Peace and Seven Star are probably my favorites, just stay away from Echo and Golden Bat) and they usually run 450-500 yen a pack. And make sure to pick up a few cartons on the way out at the Duty Free shop. Last time I think I got 3 cartons of Seven Star 7mg menthol for about 60 bucks. So if you go to a convenience store you can just buy them as 99% of the time they won’t ID you because you’re not Japanese unless you look like a little kid.

>> No.4675689

It is neat to see that a store had so many for sale at once. My impression is that in Japan it wasn't unheard of for shops to receive prototypes for demonstration purposes and the like. I know a few prototypes even had the release date information for the final game coded in, and "Needs to be Returned" is common to see written on Japanese prototype cartridges.

I wish someone who grew up in Japan during the 80s/90s could chime in with how common it was to encounter early versions of games on display prior to release. I don't get the feeling that this practice was common in the US, but then again I wasn't born until the late 80s.

Japanese video games, from Japan, are a wonderful thing. Japan is a true treasure trove.
