Reminds me of Halo 2 coming out for PC... but you could only play it on Vista because it required DX10... so you had to buck up and get Vista just to be able to see the vista of that which was Halo 2.

This megawad reeks of being Technology Bait... I would not be surprised if there was some kind of agreement between Graf & co and whoever is doing this megawad. To make it look that fucking beautiful...

And I have a right to be paranoid because of Gamergate, I wasnt here to see gamergate but I read up about it.
If Graf is collecting information and has an agreement to sell that info (for whatever reason) then he would have alot riding on it. This isnt the first time someone has gone out of their way to provide content or apps for some kind of subversive purpose. Alot can be said through private messaging and discord, it doesnt have to be disclosed in forums.

Why can't source ports, or even games like Quake 1 and Quake 2, switch between the software rendering and hardware rendering on the fly?

If a source port of Doom uses Open gl, why isn't there an option to switch back to the old pixelated images too?

might as well complain about that guy who made MK2 in Doom, why go through all that effort when you can just play regular Mortal Kombat 2?

it's the very fact that you can do it in doom that people do it, that's the gist of it all. also of course, it means that a mod can be compatible with other doom mods, though with Elementalism having custom monsters and weapons already it seems like it's gonna need that vanilla treatment TUTNT had recently for that to happen.

Still working on it. Or at least, a major rework of the entire system.

I joined that one day9 '30 day project challenge' thing in order to finally finish this.

Most weapons are 80% except the ones I haven't even started yet, and I've got some subsystems to work on. Probably expanded my scope on this since the rework.

Did end up scrapping the chainsaw replacement entirely, and I'm going to add an inventory-based spell subsystem that uses chainsaw spawns instead. Have a spell to heal or armor up, or a spell to stop time for a time, etc. Basically, mana-to-powerup conversion.

Anyone good with trenchbroom here?

I recently started out mapping for Quake 1 using the trenchbroom manual & Dumptruck_ds's youtube tutorial series as my main references. There's a couple of things I cant seem to find info on:

1: Is there a way to align textures without moving the brush? the only way I know how to do it so far is select a brush, assign a texture, turn off texture lock, then move the brush around until the texture lines up, lock it again & move it back to its original position. I figure there's probably a much better way of doing this I dont know about yet?

2: How do I rotate a light so the light direction points straight up or down? If i select the light with the rotate tool only the direction only changes on the horizontal axis' not vertically like i want. I figured this might be achieved by altering the mangle value in the entity inspector, but messing with it just makes the light glitch out regardless of the number I try. What am I doing wrong?

when i play with a friend of mine, I launch from command line with something like this:

START gzdoom.exe -host <no of players incl yourself> -iwad <whatever map/mod needs> -skill <4=uv> -file <your mods and maps>

you can add +sv_cheats 1 if you feel your are under supplied with ammo

what will happen is you'll see the a GUI pop up and zdoom will just say it's waiting, then it's up to your pals to use the -join switch instead of -host correctly

obviously, you need to make sure your router is forwarding the port 5029 to your machine

In the right pane, click the Face tab, the one where you select what texture you want. Under the big grey box, there's X offset, Y offset, angle, and X/Y scale- use those to align the texture exactly how you want it. Note that this will affect the entire brush- if you want to edit only one side, hold Shift and click the face you want first. This will also fill that big grey box with the texture you're using with the shape of the currently selected brush face overlaid so you can see exactly how it lines up.

If you want to reverse how a texture appears, you can use negative numbers for the X/Y scale options: -1 will invert the texture in that direction, which you'll be using a lot if you're using the standard map format (instead of Valve 220) as on any given square brush, two sides will be backwards due to the texture format (based on world coordinates instead of brush face coordinates).

>2: How do I rotate a light so the light direction points straight up or down? Normally you have to give the light a target-targetname field pair with an info_null- the light will then point at the info_null. If you're using newer tools (i.e. ericw's), you use the mangle field with three values for yaw, pitch, and roll (i.e. 0 90 0).

Also, spotlights behave differently from standard area lights, they have separate fields for how wide an area they light up and are generally much less bright than a normal light at the same distance so you may have to increase the brightness/change the delay or wait/etc. to get the effect you want.

>I didnt know about the target info_null method, is there any specific instances where this has any advantage over editing the mangle value or did more modern tools render this obsolete?
It's been rendered obsolete with the new tools, the one advantage is if you're sketching shit together real quick and don't want to precisely figure out the angles, you just want a light to shine at a certain spot. IIRC it doesn't really make a difference anyway though, unlike info_notnull, info_null isn't compiled as part of the map (only used to aim lights, then deleted) so it doesn't take up an entity slot either way.

nifty trick... I didnt know "fail" was a command, just figured the only ones that you could use were goto, loop, stop

Hey check this out... I want to shoot a projectile from at weapon that then delivers a shotgun blast forward (straight forward from the shooter, or targeting whoever was under the reticle). But whenever ive tried this in the past it just shoots the player instead.

Two ideas involved are delivering a projectile that explodes downrange and also scatters shrapnel (or delivers a low damage shotgun blast to ampilfy painchances) - but it doesnt spray the player with it, ie only targets a specific arc. Maybe even only spreads side to side instead of forwards and backwards so that it has a higher chance to hit whatever is next to the target.

Also a railgun shotgun, but since railgun shots dont have any accuracy deviation I think I would need to emit a projectile which then turns itself randomly in different directions to deliver the railgun shots (instantly). They could be lasers or ghost beams or particle beams, terminal capabilities of the railgun shots are irrelevant.
> this is to avert using ripper fastprojectiles and just do things properly

Also im still wondering how to do this "only hits a monster once" BFG spray trick. So that the bfg spray only whops a monster for some fixed amount if it hits them (something like 250 damage). Im thinking that im going to have to replace all the monsters in order to get this effect though.
> hacky lo damage bfg spray that sends monster to a bfg spray painstate, which then displays the effect and zaps them

also what is Spread_Z? that one doesnt make sense at all since you're sending the shot forward in an angular cone (Z is a depth dimension...)

>> No.4676157

Whoever labeled that differently for the railgun function was a ditz.
> Im okay with setting the other junk in the string, I have to do that for other things too.

Still I wonder how to do this shrapnel casting explosive that doesnt blast back at the player. Does that mean I just offset the bullet attack by 180 degrees so that it goes away from the player? (sounds like a dirty hack which likely wont credit kills properly)

Im also looking for a way to deliver that single BFG spray hit. I like to think that the BFG is good for crowd control but if you want to take on a boss you really ought to hit it with the main projectile. Would balance it pretty nicely by making it do what people expect it to do, tame down some of its brokenness.

So I've finally gotten to e1m4b (replayed e1m1-e1m2-e1m3-e1m9-e1m4 for context too), UV-pistolstart.

My impressions from that part of nu-episode1 can be summed this way:

"Don't you think, player, that it somewhat humiliating for you to use the pittance, the handouts, I, the author of these levels, provide to you? Don't you, the player, think, that depending upon my fancy should be a bit insulting to you? A bit below your sense of self-worth? No? OK, have it your way. I am making you waste your time on some very, very stupid things, but you are the one who agrees to let me do that to you out of your's own volition. What do you get in return? A sense of accomplishment, that you've beaten me somehow. Despite my clearly giving the victory to you just because I felt like it. That's simply some wishful thinking on your part, player. And you should totally feel a bit humiliated, by the way."

I'm trying to locate a doom map, this is what I know.

>Single level (afik)
>H.R Giger inspired, but it isn't "Adessa"
>There is a kind of "going downwards" theme to the whole map, feels isolating
>Final fight is against two archviles

I'll try to reformulate.

Lack of resources (health first and foremost, given Romero's love for surprise attacks)

encourages/provokes to player to fall back to environment/encounter-specific auxiliary means to tackle fights and gain advantage (barrels, infight provocations, backtracking, searching for secrets, looking for "out of ordinary" hints designating secrets, saveloads) instead of direct confrontations

those auxiliary means are obligingly provided by the author for the exact purpose of serving as a fallback, are strictly controlled and manipulated by him; you are encouraged to start thinking in "necessity is the mother of invention" mindset, and to use those "advantages" habitually, not only when they are actually necessary

when you were launching the game, you hoped to spend your time with it in a particular way, you imagined it somehow, quite specifically.

when you fall back on ad-hoc strategies author urges you to rely upon, you are not playing that game anymore. In fact, whatever you imagine in regards to the game you are playing, isn't corroborated by the game, since the author deliberately tries to be as unpredictable as possible in regards to "fallback solutions". You are deliberately left guessing, trying to guess what's the next thing author has in mind, which you naturally cannot, since you are not a psychic

so instead of playing the game you have imagined when launching the game, you are playing the game of trying to guess what game the author wants you to play. The gameplay sort of gets hijacked from you

that, however, only happen if you use "pittance" solutions HABITUALLY, if you learn to rely upon their presence. That way you resign yourself to the fact that you are not provided with whatever service you imagined being provided with prior to launching the game

>> No.4676464

>>4676459
and the thing that makes you NOT take the "easy apparent way" HABITUALLY (when there is no necessity to take it) and to basically play your own game whenever it's possible within the confines created by the author of the level, is called PRIDE

and Romero's actual aim, in his leveldesigns, seems to be destroying said player's pride and enforcing a HABIT of ALWAYS playing "Romero's game" - meaning, to make player OBEY

>> No.4676484

I've also tried fighting the New Icon of Sin.
It was weird because it's either stupidly easy or total bullshit.
Now the Icon can fire meteors and can drain most of your health.
BUT you can strafe left and right and hitting it with the BFG 10K that you get right before the fight ,barely getting hit.

Plutonia's meant to kick your ass. It's design is based on brutal ambushes that will almost always kill you the first time you see them. Just treat it like an old NES game and don't give up.

Learn your PRO DOOM MONSTER STRATS, recognize infighting opportunities, know your enemy pain chances so you can use the right weapon to keep them stunned and press an advantage (like stopping mancubi from shooting by timing your shotgun hits right) and memorize how many shots it takes to kill enemies so you can more easily prioritize who to kill when and with what. Don't rush in, recognize when you're surrounded and don't be afraid to retreat so you're not on their turf (especially with chaingunner ambushes). Snipe with the chaingun by tapping your shots out, learn how the BFG actually works.

I dunno how much of this you already know. If none of this is new to you, then just keep playing. Watch demos of other people UV-Maxing the level you're stuck on to get a sense of what high level play is.

Eh doesn't have the 5-part sector lighting that makes Doom64 so atmospheric. They try to fake it using dynamic lights.

For example in pic related you can see one color at the bottom of the pillars which seamlessly blends into another at the top. This is not possible in zdoom / GZDoom. Original Doom64 has 5 different colors for each sector: a floor, ceiling, lower wall, upper wall, and thing color. They can all be different and can be any color. The lower wall color will seamlessly blend into the upper wall color.

The Best way to play Doom64 on PC has always been Doom64EX.

On 3.0 to 3.2.2 or some shit like that, any mod could gain arbitrary access to the console, which is really, really fucking bad.

The biggest concern to them was you could use it to overwrite any file on your hard disk with one of GZDoom's log files. It'd have been easy to sneak a System32 killer in an otherwise fine looking mod.

There's monumental fuckups and then there's having that in there, which only became known while Graf was having a hissy fit over Lilith.pk3 and threatening to quit, again.

I don't know how many of you know about this website, or are into /tg/ related things, or are even into collecting doom merch, especially unofficial stuff, but Klukva Miniatures are releasing a resin figure of the Doom2016 character that will ship in late April.
Around a year or so ago, they released the classic doomguy in his famous pose, holding a shotgun and your choice of the pistol or a middle finger. Considering this board and this thread, I assume this would be the more popular version. I don't know if they still sell it, but considering the company's relatively obscure status, they probably have some in stock.
Klukva is a Russian miniature company that makes fantastic figurines of popular game and manga characters and calls them unassuming names to avoid legal issues.

FDA + Review

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b3NED9WWIRk

This map is a series of giant rooms connected by giant corridors filled with seemingly dozens of Realm667 enemies. There is no cohesion to any of it as textures are used seemingly at random. The level geometry seemed to be just as random. There's random platforms with nothing on them or rooms with no purpose.

There is some charm to the map, though. This comes from the fact that it's not broken and it's not overly confusing. So while it's not what I would call a great or even a good map there is some fun to be had if you go in with the right mindset and the right mood.

>Le Virgin Girl
- boring "clothes" gimmick, too afraid to delve into H territory
- awkward body proportions, hence awkward movement and weaponset as well
- hasn't tasted any dick from the monsters of hell
- feet always covered in black shoes, her toes suspected to be sucked into a vortex
- always broken, hence the need for frequent updates
- made by a weeb who think he'll be the next ZUN (but for clothing instead of grandma lolis)

>The HDOOMchad
- Interesting "fuck them demon girls" gameplay that never ceases to be tiring, literally puts the "H" into hentai
- has an imposing weaponset that makes demongrills go instantly moist upon seeing it
- has given the dick to all of the (female) monsters of hell
- penis always covered in lube, from the love juices of his previous victims
- a perfect game on its own, no need to update often
- made by a cutting-edge talented artist, had a part in artwork for another great game, Ion Maiden

aothough IMO it should be the other way around; le HVirgin vs the ChaDaina

It's that Graf and Rachael both simultaneously disregard what the (ZDoom) community's consensus is on the forum and don't seem to be having any sort of consideration for what has already been said or proposed. You're gonna have to be specific here. Eye-candy and "Super HD ultra gore!!!!" mods like Quake 1.5 use Darkplaces (and very rarely FTE, like Qore apparently) because it supports all sorts of extra lighting effects, plus lots of extra scripting and engine shenanigans to add even more layers on top of the poor id Tech 2 base. Actual gameplay mods and mapsets- Quoth and every map and mod using it as a base, Arcane Dimensions, In The Shadows, basically every func_ Map Jam, etc.- are built for and tested on Fitzquake (or nowadays, one of its descendants: QS/Mark V), the few exceptions being reallllly old stuff that predates these sourceports and had its own ports developed for it, like Nehahra.

It was never a phenomenon over there, since most people didn't have personal computers over there (and most still don't), but among people who did have PCs, and who played PC games, it was quite well liked. I think if they were to release a translated port of Classic Complete on modern consoles, it would probably be enjoyed by quite a lot more people (despite the minor censorship).

I believe the Saturn port had a little bit popularity too, despite the fact that the Saturn port of Doom runs horribly (at least the western port does).

On that topic it's worth noting that, while FTEQW is obviously its own Quakeworld based thing, Fitzquake-derived engines like Quakespasm all include texture filtering enabled by default because they're basically meant to be "GLQuake but with bigger limits and fixed bugs" and GLQuake had texture filtering enabled by default as well. Mark V also includes it as a video options entry, but QS still omits it; both also lack options for stuff like model interpolation and particles IIRC outside of using the console.

If nothing else it'd be interesting if texture filtering at least was disabled in the Quakespasm .pak, similar to the new menu background and changed map entities- leave movement interpolation enabled because monsters look like hot shit without it on, but automatically set nearest neighbor textures and square particles. Probably not gonna happen, though.

This was posted in one of the threads, and seems like a pretty good way to handle it. I can say that when I first got into Doom in 06-07, I didn't know what vanilla behavior and graphics were, and wandering through the innumerable fucking settings was a bit daunting. It'd be nice to have something where I can set the baseline as vanilla and easily adjust from there what I'd like. As it stands, I'm still not sure where to turn off how GZDoom makes Partial Invisibility not let sleeping monsters see you.

I also organized/mapped for HUMP and did the entire soundtrack for REKKR.

I haven't done much mapping recently (desu I'm a mediocre mapper at best), but I've been working on the soundtrack for an upcoming quake project - full 4 episode replacement with all new music in a retro-esque mapping style but using AD for additional enemies and more options for putting atmospheric sounds into maps.
At first I wasn't too keen on AD, but disabling the projectile shotguns is easy to do with a single console command, so its definitely worth if for the bonus enemies and creative options.

not in the slightest. zdoom uses a completely different RNG, and none of the compatflags switch it back over to the old 256-entry table that doom uses, meaning all demos would instantly desync no matter what.
there's also many differences between doom and zdoom that the compatflags just don't touch, like what happens to your velocity when you run into a thing (in doom, you don't lose your velocity; in zdoom you do), or how you can only start attacking with the chainsaw whenever it calls A_WeaponReady (which is once every four tics)
that, and zdoom ports use a different demo format anyway from what I understand, so it's fruitless anyway

prboom+ has the -timedemo and -viddump command line options, although it's a pain to actually get working
when prboom+ gets the -timedemo and -viddump arguments, it'll run through the demo one frame at a time, dump the video and audio to separate files, then stitch them together into an MKV file once it's done doing that. to actually get that working, there's six lines in the prboom-plus/glboom-plus config that you need to set up:

>cap_soundcommand "oggenc2 -r -R %s -q 5 - -o output.ogg"
>cap_videocommand "x264 -o output.mkv --crf 22 --demuxer raw --input-csp rgb --input-depth 8 --input-res %wx%h --fps 35 -"
>cap_muxcommand "mkvmerge -o %f output.mkv output.ogg"
>cap_tempfile1 "output.ogg"
>cap_tempfile2 "output.mkv"
>cap_remove_tempfiles 0

here's where you get the programs you need (just dump them into prboom's folder):
- oggenc2: http://www.rarewares.org/ogg-oggenc.php
- x264: https://www.videolan.org/developers/x264.html
- mkvmerge: https://mkvtoolnix.download/downloads.html

it's a bit of a pain to get working, and your videos will be exactly 35fps, but it works well once it is set up

Why would a complete newbie find about Doom, one of the most iconic games of all time that anyone can find screenshots of in a google search, through this one specific source port and never have seen how the game actually looks like? How WOULD they find out about it and be interested in it if they haven't seen it first? And if they were interested because they saw some super flashy Brutal Doom video with effects and filters out the ass, it's clear that they like the textured, opengl setting. All those settings and wads made to make Doom "prettier" wouldn't exist if people didn't like them in the first place.

What exactly is "awful" about that? Seems pretty straightforward. Hell the opengl settings and texture settings are both the first option in their respective submenus to boot.

>> No.4678985

for one, it's buried underneath four menus. something as important as making the graphics not look like they're smeared in vaseline should not be four menus deep.
and I know from experience that people will fuck up the most basic instructions (like installation instructions that are nothing more than "unzip this file"), so expecting them to dig through menus and know that texture filtering is what they're looking for is just setting yourself up for disappointment.

also, there's anons above who couldn't figure out how to disable the blursphere behaviour changes, because it was hidden away in the compatibility options menu. that menu in particular is a gigantic wall of text that is hard as hell to read on the default doom 2 titlepic. fuck me.

But I just replied to your post saying that and showed how simple, intuitive and straightforward it is to find that option. The source port has a gazillion options so it makes sense that there's so many menus to keep it organized. Sounds like you're trying really hard to make it look bad.
>and I know from experience that people will fuck up the most basic instructions (like installation instructions that are nothing more than "unzip this file"),
So it's the source port's fault that people are impressive levels of retarded and can't follow something so basic? No.

>also, there's anons above who couldn't figure out how to disable the blursphere behaviour changes, because it was hidden away in the compatibility options menu
Good thing that has nothing to do with what we're talking about, which is texture options, and I proved how easy it was to find it.

Could you at least try to hide your bias? You're really desperate to make it seem like these menus are bad.

>But I just replied to your post saying that and showed how simple, intuitive and straightforward it is to find that option. The source port has a gazillion options so it makes sense that there's so many menus to keep it organized. Sounds like you're trying really hard to make it look bad.
or, hear me out, 90% of those "gazillion options" could easily be shoved into an "advanced options" version of the menu so that they don't bury the important options in a pile of largely inconsequential junk.
seriously, the "turn off the vaseline filter" option is something that should be front and center, considering how whenever there's a screenshot with filters on, there's always *someone* that spergs out about it.
it's obvious to you where it is because you already know it's there. to a first-time player who opens up the graphics menu and sees a giant mess of largely meaningless bullshit, it might as well not exist. I mean goddamn, there's people on the "change the default filter thread" admitting they hate the menu so much that they'd rather just ignore it. should they go fuck themselves?

same thing with the compatflags menu and gameplay options menu. what gameplay options do most people care about? hint: jumping, crouching, and freelook. what compat flags do most people care about? hint: they don't, they just use one of the preset compatibility modes. so why throw the entire book at people who really just want to turn off jumping and crouching?
so to make things easily, throw the big menus into advanced options. have jump/crouch/freelook/compat-mode options in a simplified menu. easy.

or is the idea of making menus easier to use somehow a bad one?
