A lot of people hate PH's all stylus controls, but I actually don't mind them
It was nice to try it out, but with all the complaints about it there should have been a button option in ST.

And I find it funny that for all the waggle it uses, there's no lefthanded option, and he's flipped so righties don't feel weird when his movements don't match up, same happened with TP even though that was a complete non-issue

I can just imagine it, we already know Link's history, and he wasn't even an adult when he pulled off all those games; somewhere down the line before his retirement (After Ganon is dead, for fucking good this time; every reality and timeline of that bastard is dead, his undead are dead, and before he was born is dead; One last time, he is fucking dead for good. Finally.), a magical ritual was done to contain all the chaos that was contained within him as Dark Link through all his quests, all his history, all his trials, everything that has weighed down on him since he was born, finally separated from him and absolutely contained in another realm, as to not cause any more future chaos.

Decades pass, Link and Zelda have had a happy rule of Hyrule over the decades, peace was held for a good 50-odd years or so (unless there were other adventures within that time), and then Hell breaks loose this time. Literally.

Link and Zelda's heirs to the throne (the family bloodline) are now captured and contained in other realities of Hyrule or whatever, Zelda is possibly killed in the process; and now Link has to save someone more important than Zelda; his last living family member. After eons of giving up the sword since peace started, his age has caught up with him as he strives to relearn everything that made him the king he was before. He knows he doesn't have much time left in his old age, and his last living heir is all that's left of his legacy, besides the Triforce of courage (which the true heir now owns), and the master Sword (once more, sealed away).

The Kingdom of Hyrule is nearly burnt to the ground, again, Zelda is no more, as well as his kids and all his grandkids except one last one who can still claim the Triforce to rule with.

Guess who has him? Dark Link. It's time to end his shit once and for all, even if it costs us our life.

Of course, the ending would make the kid out to relive Link's legacy from Kokiri Village, and wake up with no memory.

>> No.462457

>>462342
In case that subject gets tossed around any bit; yes, all of his potential heirs. Link could have been a pimping king, hooked up with all the girls in the games, had a harem of them. Yep; go to each village where each of the ruling members of those families (Link's MILF Harem) have also suffered just as terrible a fate as Link and Zelda have (maybe even Queen Ruto's Zora-Elf Hybrids). Who could be the last heir? Whose still alive that Dark Link hasn't already brutally maimed or pretty much committed outright genocide to?

Like my original post, as a potential ending, by the end of the game, the world gets one hell of a reset button (a mighty violent one), Link sacrificed himself to his darker self to save his final living heir (from the depths of Hell), and his last grandchild loses all of his memories, and may or may not still have the Dark Chaos curse that Dark Link was made of, that was why he was sealed away in the first place.

Behold the Brand New Generation of Zelda games.

Feel free to modify my idea if you want. This sounds pretty awesome so far already.

C'mon. It would be pretty awesome to play as a hero that has already been through all that shit, taken up retirement for a good few decades, and have the call come back to you once more (harshly, might I add), and you start regaining your old abilities and muscle memory of the items of past and such; except, instead of saving the princess like every other game, this time, it's the future and you're saving your legacy through bloodline. You're an old man saving your (great-)Grandchildren from a terrible fate.

In a sense, I could sorta get what you might mean between the lines: It's basically Taken, with Legend of Zelda background post-Happy Endings + a few decades to age. Replace sex slavers with your darker self become Satan.

Not at all. Your ideas are really good for what you are trying to achieve. It's just it reminded me kinda of some kid's "and then this happened, and then this happened" yarn, not too much, but then that last sentence just took me by surprise.

If I could critique or modify, I'd take out parts about "other realities or whatever". Keep it a fairly simple story about Dark Link and hell breaking loose. Travel all over Hyrule and everything, but keep it simple and bold for maximum impact. Also
>After eons of giving up the sword
Is Link hundreds of years old here? I don't follow.

Another thing; your story seems to rely on an (to borrow a term from tvtropes) Idiot Ball "there's no way this could possibly go wrong" premise. This should probably either be rewritten, or at least portrayed in-story as stupid or ill-advised. If it's just portrayed as a completely necessary ritual, it might come across as cheap storytelling just for the sake of getting the ball rolling.

Don't completely like the idea of a total "reset button" at the end. If this truly is to usher in the "Brand New Generation" of Zelda, I'd like something to show for it, some new villain or noticeable change to society or the setting, otherwise it's just another Zelda game that came out before other new Zelda games.

Elves are almost always consistently stereotyped as warriors, very very good warriors. Even in Tolkiens universe which a majority of fantasy rips off they were extremely great fighters, amongst the other races they really had no equal. They were the best blacksmiths, they could use magic, they were the most agile and deadly, they were the most fearless, they were the most perceptive, they were the wisest, most knowledgeable and intellectual. Immune to more disease, having greater stamina. They were basically OP as fuck. They were effectively the chosen race.
Their one gigantic weakness was that they had those high standards that they trust will be met of other races which could not match. Which alienated them.
There is no aspect of life in which they do not do better than men save for appreciating weakness, frailty and failure of others for that is the realm where men live in and are most experienced.

It's because he's referencing Tolkien, which is hardly fair. Tolkien had a giant elf boner and it shows in all of his writing, especially The Silmarillion and in his other apocryphal volumes.

Sure, it did lead to codifying most of what high fantasy would become, but it's not really fair to bring it up when trying to defend elves because in Tolkien's writing they're simply the best at fucking everything, full stop.

Dwarves have nothing on Elves, even the dwarves suck elf dick in awe of their mithril weapons and amazing shit.
Most of the named items worth having are elvish. Likewise, Bilbo, Thorin, and Gandalf used elvish weapons. Frodo also got bilbos shit.
The sword, narsil used against sauron was original dwarven but reforged by the elves after it shattered into Andúril.
Dwarves are known to be good blacksmiths. But the elves are the best.

Granted. Gygax threw some craw in their when he translated them to wargaming and made them slender, faster, but weaker. Also dwarven weapons are listed, but not elvish (not that can't use them but you typically don't buy them as per listed items and it'd be more DM fair if that.)
Gygax is the secondary most common influence in fantasy, but he also had to balance the world because what's the fucking point in playing his game if it's not balanced. So out goes the Elf Master Race nazism.
But even in other mythos Elves are renowned fighters. Even in D&D they're quite qualified and gain bonuses to dex, immunities and perception and automatically get proficiency with light weapons, with helps if you're a fighter and you stack dex and use finesse and use high threat range items like their favored item the rapier which they get bonus too tag on keen and increase the threat range to rolling 15-20, and get the overwhelming, massive and devastating criticals which tag on massive damage or insta-kill most things.
So they aren't bad.

>> No.463505 [DELETED]

Dwarves make some of the best metallurgical items. But they don't deal with magic, and that's where the elves edge them out.

The elves create things as art first, and function second, whilst the dwarves prefer function over form. Yes, elven blades are fucking cool as shit, and magic as hell, but they're not something readily available. There's only 3? in the entire main series; Glamdring, Orcrist, and Sting. Once Gandalf gets the okay to carry Foehammer, he does so for the next 80 years. They are high-class shit, but they're also generally all named and exceptionally rare.

Dwarven shit you can buy, if you have enough money.

>> No.463563 [DELETED]

>>463427
Noting that similar builds could be done with a human, but that geared towards an elf, they already have some of the proficiency in place and a dex bump which is useful for a lot of things like tumbling, increase in armor class etc... Though a fighter does need to raise his strength for the criticals.

>>463505
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Middle-earth_weapons_and_armour
Actually in Tolkiens stories, albeit probably due to the cast and who we're watching, they're generally the most commonly named items really. And they make plenty of their weapons given they present the finest armies in the series. But they don't seem to have a necessity to trade their items combined with the elves tendency to stay the fuck by themselves, most of their collection is probably very rare for anyone who isn't an elf in an elf kingdom, let alone having a reason for one their smiths to make something worth while if they themselves didn't bother with it.
Nearly everything important seems to be made from elves or modified by them.

>> No.463631 [DELETED]

Yes, nearly all Elven weapons are named, that's what I meant. But what I'm saying is, it's like bringing a piece of art to Greenwich Village, and the hipster-king denotes it 'oh yeah, that's the mona lisa, pretty cool. that was made by da vinci, I think? I saw that a few hundred years ago, pretty cool. You can keep it, though, I don't have room for it. Trying to be a minimalist, y'know.'

It's a big deal to the group, because holy shit, we have weapons from elves! but it's not as big a deal to the elves, who are just 'whatever, enjoy your great war era butter knives, I guess'.

I do like the insularity of the elves, but the elves have problems also. The dwarves have no problems procreating but elves are getting rarer and rarer, and many are leaving the world altogether- elves themselves are becoming rare, wondrous things.

The elves are like that because the way in Tolkien's works because of the way his mythology is set up. They are a step up above mankind because they were created first and dwarves. If you're going to go Tolkien, it's sort of THE God>Gods>Wizards>Elves>Humans and dwarves sort of settle somewhere around humans because they were a fuck up essentially and not part of the plan. Elves may be pretty rad in Tolkien's stories, but they were far from perfect. Almost all of their problems they caused themselves.

Tolkien didn't just think this up on his own though, it's pulled from European mythology. Elves were seen as magical creatures superior to humans in some way. They also tended to be dicks.

Also, keep in mind these games come from Japan. While anyone in Europe (or places settled primarily by Europeans like The United States or Australia) are going to get a dose of other folklore and mythology about elves, even kids who read no faerietales have heard of Santa's helpers. Japan doesn't have this, the elves in their games are based almost entirely off of a romantic view of elves like Tolkien and derivative works.

Actually, Dwarfs were created first by Aulë the Smith, but they weren't given life first because Aulë didn't have the ability to breathe life into his creations like Eru Ilúvatar could. So the elves were given life first, despite technically being created after Aulë created the dwarfs.

Yet I digress. What it really comes down to is that if you're looking more for balance between races, it's better to go with Gygax or other, more modern takes. Referencing Tolkien whenever you're trying to play the "which race is the better race" game for high fantasy just isn't fucking fair on any count. He intentionally designed the elves to be the best at fucking everything, with everyone else intentionally designed to be worse.

Besides, Tolkien doesn't even apply to Zelda anyway, as far as I see it.

They still recognize them as great forged items. They just don't give a shit mostly because they're not interested in fighting wars and shit really.
It's not a big deal to them if you're running around with it because well, you're actually using it and they can generally make more of most of what you have.
For them, it's something they'd hang in a closet to remember shit long since passed.
Elves really aren't interested in mortal concerns. They've got gods to live amongst.

I have read the Silmarillion, and the Lost Tales, and his other apocryphal works.

Yes, the elves were major league douchebags, especially to each other. I never denied this. However, they were also THE BEST AT FUCKING EVERYTHING.

Tolkien created them to be the bestest, most powerful, most beautiful, most superior race, not counting the actual gods. How is this not having a giant-elf boner again?

>> No.463967 [DELETED]

>>463851
Because tolkien went out of his way to show that the elves were incompetent and that humans were ultimately superior. Literally read the silmaril and try to find a spot where the elves are legitimately successful, you won't, it's the humans that had the greatest success, the humans won several major victories fighting with the elves, the humans are the ones that ultimately stole the Silmaril and it's was a human that killed one of the most powerful dragons of all time (twice, well half human the second time.). And it's humans that conquered the earth and made even Saruon subject to them and it's humans that get to be at Eru's side after they die while Elves languish in a cave until the world ends. Hell it's practically a running theme in his work that being "da bestest" is fucking meaningless, because the elves are utlimately unable to be even mildly useful stopping Sauron whereas a duo of weak unskilled hobbits end up succeeding at it. >"which race is the better race" game for high fantasy just isn't fucking fair on any count.
No, but not referencing gygax for balance or Tolkien for a large portion for mythos. And saying elves are pussies and can't fight for shit is just retarded. This isn't about fair, this about someone saying elves are shit, when they're generally not.Elfquest does some weird native american shit, they're almost always fighting shit though, so I'd qualify them as decent fighters I suppose, I don't really read that shit, so whatever.
Warcraft has elves, I know they were mainly archers in WC2 though. I'm unfamiliar with WoW, so I have no idea what they did with them, apparently they can be warriors according to a class sheet. I don't fucking know how they handle.
Morrowind, has three variants, some of which are weaker and more suited to magic, some of which are fairly on par with bretons. None of them are really inherently terrible. Though any race that knows alchemy or magic can fuck warriors in the ass because magic is so OP, that you can basically start flying around as a god.
Shadowrun, Elves are pretty much humans with a couple bonuses. Humans get an edge bonus which is like a D&D feat as it were.

The only time elves are really treated as less effective than humans is when it's translated to be 'fairies' like puck in berserk is an 'elf' and he's definitely not on par with humans.

The trick is to realize that it's a catch-22.
It's essentially the you're so skilled at everything, you never learned to fail motif. For people who don't see failing as an option, they'll never build the structures to support you when they fail, because they always expect to succeed.

Humans decide, after thousands of years, to uplift their favorite species, let's say the dog, as their legacy.
The dogs begin to populate the world, doing dog things, making dog cities, creating dogumentaries, and so on.

The humans, now a space-faring race, don't need Terra anymore and decide to head off to the stars, leaving it behind for their canine pals. A few humans stick around, for a while, but will eventually leave because this isn't their time or place anymore.

Replace humans with elves and dogs with humans.
This is what Tolkien is about.

Elves in newer media tend to be more frail and dexterous as a balance thing, to seperate them from humans but put them on an equal footing as humans. Tolkien elves were not meant to be equal, ever. But in a game, you need game balance usually where picking 'elf' doesn't mean you win everything forever just because of who you are. I'm looking at you, 3E.

There's a difference between the two ideals, as far as elves go, and it's important to recognize this difference when talking about the subject.

>> No.464106 [DELETED]

Gygax should have also added that to his elves really. Bonus to everything they do, bonus to every negative they hit.
Bonus to disarming every trap, if it fucks up, they take more damage.
Bonus to sneak, but if they lose, drop initiative and take confused moral hit.
Such that an elf is so good at sneaking when you ask them to sneak into a room full of 50 sleeping orcs and steal the jingly loud noise jewel of fuckery, they not only smile and say easy modo, they actually might pull it off, and if they don't they might actually survive taking everyone out.
Whereas a human and more so a hobbit, would say, wait what? You want me to? Maybe, try a different plan? One that doesn't land me surrounded by more enemies than I can handle. Because they expect to get caught, they expect to fuck up, and thus they plan accordingly preferably in such a way that maximizes they'll pull it off even without being exceptionally skilled. In that way, a hobbit would get armor and such, a human might try to use distraction or confusion, purposely rousing them to remove said obstacle. Elves, don't give a shit about obstacles.

And to make that clear, because they don't expect the trap ever go off, they aren't sitting there trying to disarm it warily off to the side, scrambling and sweating it out, face in first showing off how fast and accurate they and succeed, 'usually.' So if by chance they would fuck it, it's splat right in the fucking face, assuming they don't manage to fucking dodge it.

Nope, keep it as dogs and humans. That explains why one of the most populous species in Hyrule, and the big bad boss, look like humanoid bulldogs.

Most of us decided to leave the planet and used our technology to help man's best friend evolve enough to take over the globe, and we gave fuck all about the few impoverished fucks (mostly the elderly) that had to stay and live in caves, dungeons and tree trunks they couldn't buy a ticket.

He should have added 'shaken moral' for multiple quick failures that last for a period of time. IE, more than one significant failure in a day would leave you with a negative roll bonus to things you do based on how many failures. 1d6/2d6/3d6 etc... so if you've failed to pick three separate locks in a row for say, your character would be rolling -3d6s for a day or longer because he doesn't know what the fuck is going on and it's seriously taking an ego blow.

Jesus FUCK I love Katsuya Terada's rendition of Legend of Zelda.

I kinda want them to do a Zelda game in the style of Xenogears. You know acknowledging the previous incarnations of Link and Zelda, the pair working to unravel the repeating patterns of their reincarnations, fighting Hylia and Demise as twisted abominations and in the end destroying the Triforce.

That's not what the Legend of Zelda is about though.
It's always been a coming of age story.

links awakening wasn't a coming of age story. neither were the oracle games, link is an established adventurer by then. in fact basically all the 'sequel' zeldas tend to not include that theme.

>sequel zeldas

Right. It's never gotten to the point where Link is an old man, it's about his transition from child to adult.
Having an old man Link is a terrible idea.

I really miss these Disney-ish, Brothers Grimm-style designs. The new Zelda art looks really bland compared to the old stuff.

I think that's my biggest gripe about the new lttp

I love toon link as much as the other, but the atmosphere just clashes horribly with that of the original lttp. They need to make things seem a little more bleak and atmospheric.

Here's to hoping the demo was just a demo, and they'll improve it eventually

The illustrations in the instruction manual were awesome

I remember staring at this picture early on, before I had gone very far in the game, and wonder what is he doing? what is that knight thing coming?

The manual was also at times very vague. It told you that to get certain secret things you had to show "your credentials" and I was like credentials?

The manual also shrouded ganon in mystery. It said that no one had seen him and lived (because he could turn invisible?)

They really built him up specially with illustrations like this

I remember being terrified upon stepping into Level 9 death mountain, knowing at some point I would face ganon
Also did anyone else love that you could be a couple of rooms away from the boss and you could hear it growling?

That, along with the awesome, creepy, atmospheric music always made the hairs on the back of my neck stand on end. I wish another Zelda game would do it some time.

The anticipation that in a couple of rooms you'd face a powerful beast, not knowing how to defeat it... Not knowing if you had enough hearts to fight it...

It's a feeling no new Zelda game ever offers anymore

True. Twilight princess and Wind waker had great atmospheres in their own respect, but were ultimately trumped by "stab the eye to win" and spooky scary skeletons.

You'd think they'd make a more difficult game by now, or at least the option to ramp up difficulty

holy shit yes. that deep dark music in level 9 when you stepped in. low, bassy and evil.

that growling was awesome too, it always helped me find the boss if I hadn't come across the compass yet. Sounded kinda like an eagle too.

That's what I'm saying he's the third most awesome Link after LTTP Link (who saved Holodrum, Labrynna, and destroyed a fucking island and escaped a dream world he was trapped in) and Original Zelda Link (who went through 2 incredibly difficult journeys fighting REAL intimidating monsters like pic related)

Then OOT Link, who saved Hyrule and Majora too

Still, I wouldn't put him in shit tier ever

I'd put one of the Links that only had 1 quest there

>there will never be another Link as badass as Original Zelda Link

While all your other Links fight monsters that look like cartoon characters (for fuck's sake look at the octorocks in ocarina of time) and cute little deku scrubs Zelda 1 Link was fighting huge half-man half lion mean sons of bitches that could easily fuck you up

And then just for kicks and giggles he later got in swordfights with tough-as-nails iron knuckles and doomknockers, as well as lizard men (gerus) and other mean as fuck creatures

Will any Link ever step up to a challenge like the original Zelda Link?
