I really love the whole game, outside of the high frequency of combat. The characters, themes, locations, music, humor, attention to seemingly insignificant details, it's just a real pleasure to play.

On Mother 1 it's definitely the whole last part, starting from Teddy's town (Ellay or Valentine). Getting into the night club, having a drink and go to jail. It's one of the biggest clichés in RPGs, when you get captured and you lose all your items. But the way it's done here has the parody and humorous element that makes it so memorable. You just buy your equipment back from the same policeman after you get free. Police officers selling weapons to kids, great.
Then the whole Teddy scene when he fights you, then joins you, and kicks Lloyd out for being a nerd. He comes off as an asshole, but then you learn about what happened with his parents and his motivations and you feel sympathy for the guy, plus he's a great party member with lots of buffed stats to tank through the perilous cave to reach the final destination of the game, Mt. Itoi. I won't narrate the whole Mt. Itoi sequence, but damn the plot advances a lot and it's all done in beautiful 8-bit sprite and sound aesthetics.
For Mother 2 I really like the beginning, Onett feels super nice to stroll through, and dealing with gang members and Frank was a nice nod to Teddy and his gang on M1. Then of course Fourside/Moonside, Saturn Valley.
On Mother 3 it's when time passes and you see the transformed, urbanized Tazmily Village, chapter 4 I think. Lots of stuff going on, you just need to talk to everyone to learn what happened. Also Tane Tane Island.
Favorite NPC is the moms in all 3.

That's the most tedious part, but the Fourside Department Store is by far the hardest stretch of the game, holy shit. Each enemy does your whole health's worth of damage in one attack. You have to stuff Jeff's inventory full of Bottle Rockets and you either get lucky with the enemy spawns or you don't.

In Mother 3 Porky is suppose to be a critique in being obsessed with the past and too nostalgic. He is absolutely obsessed with the events of Earthbound. From saving Ness' yoyo, to playing a movie about the game, to selling imitation bats and hats of Ness in NPC, to the nostalgia tunnel in his tower. For Porky Earthbound was his "high point" and he wants to recreate the experience as best as possible. Lucas was his new Ness, someone who could oppose him. But the series is best enjoyed when played in order.
If you go from Mother 1 to Mother 2, you will enjoy the QoL improvements. Going back to M1 after playing 2 will make it a bit harder to go back to random encounters and stuff (unless you're used to play NES RPGs).
And from a plot standpoint, fighting the final boss on Mother 2 is a lot more meaningful if you played through 1 first.

There aren't any balancing issues in M1 to begin with; you beat it around level 30; It's a 15-20 hour game tops. Aside from what I already mentioned, the recreated game engine feels like a flash game; it's pretty much inferior in every single way: gameplay, art, and sound. It's cool for taking MOTHER on the go, but it's simply a bad version of the game. Especially in current year when we have a complete, localized US version that already has improvements built-in to play.

By the time I was there I was alreaddy capped at 99 from looking for the SoK.
I only did an autistic "all rare drops" run once though, on the GBA version (since it was easier to play while on the shitter or lying on bed). I also got the gutsy bat, after many, many hours of playing through that last section over and over.
Then I was casually playing the game on my SFC and I got the SoK without even trying.
Don't think I'll have the same luck with the magic frypan or the gutsy bat though.

It's not in development hell, it's just one guy working on everything except the graphics and music, so it's bound to take a long time. It seems on par with some kind of official release, games that had actual teams of people working on them, only in this case it's even more difficult because you're hacking a rom rather than programming things directly.

all the mother games are bottom tier.
the third one (the apparent best in the series) had a preachy as fuck story that was bland and cliched and had stale characters and awful settings to boot.

Long story short, I actually got into the Mother series because of Keiichi Suzuki, I was a fan of his work with Moonriders, etc since long ago.
To add to that, one of my favorite songs from one of my favorite bands (Uchoten) has music written by Suzuki, and lyrics by Itoi. When I learned that, I wanted to try the Mother games right away, didn't regret.
Since I got into it due to the music first and foremost, I'd like to own the original CD releases, I already collect music records anyway, and I have some Suzuki stuff.
