I never get this tactic. if you don't like something, just say you don't like it. saying something widely regarded as excellent is "shit" just closes people's minds. it makes you seem like a hysterical child.

I have always heard that Tactics Ogre is the basis for FFT, and that FFT is a simplified version. now, being more complex and challenging doesn't make any game better. especially when the trade off is excellent characters, a splendid story, and generally a more fun experience.

Both Tactics Ogre and FFT are poorly designed "tactical" RPGs. They're really no different from any random turn based RPG and there is nothing strategic about their gameplay. Additionally, FFT is an unbalanced POS.

>They're really no different from any random turn based RPG and there is nothing strategic about their gameplay.
>They're really no different from any random turn based RPG and there is nothing strategic about their gameplay.
Of course there are tactics in FFTactics, there are also many strategic elements. You have to lack some fairly basic observational skills to miss the strong points of FFT's tactical combat system vs many other games. In particular, the elements present in FFT that few games match effectively are:

> A fully 3-dimensional playing field with meaningful terrain rules.
> Many creative and well-designed battle arenas. Any halfway-decent player takes the environment into consideration when making strategic and tactical decisions.
> The FF Job System provides an excellent framework for character/team building that both encourages and facilitates customization.
> Excellent array of weapons that take full advantage of the game mechanics.

The main downside is that the game is pretty easy to break with grinding and definitely breaks when you unlock Math Skill. But that's a nitpick that says nothing about the depth of the engine. And if balance really bothers you, there are plenty of difficulty hacks that showcase the range of possibilities of the engine, like FFT1.3/

>A fully 3-dimensional playing field
You have to be kidding.
>meaningful terrain rules.
The tiles barely affect the gameplay.
>Many creative and well-designed battle arenas
You're repeating yourself already.
>Any halfway-decent player takes the environment into consideration when making strategic and tactical decisions.
Nice ideal, but the fact is that the game does not require the player to take terrain into account at any point.
>The FF Job System provides an excellent framework for character/team building that both encourages and facilitates customization.
It's just a standard job system and it's not even close to be as expansive as other games. Also, there are too many game breaking classes/ability combos that are braindead simple to figure out.
>Excellent array of weapons that take full advantage of the game mechanics.
It literally just comes down to the weapons attack power, just like any other standard turn based RPG.
>depth of the engine
There is no depth. You move your character. You pick the attack that will hit and do the most damage. Repeat ad nauseum. That's FFT.

>You have to be kidding.
Is the game not 3-dimensional? Perhaps "fully" 3d is mildly inaccurate but the engine supports things like fall damage, line of sight, and multiple levels of terrain (such as the bridge in pic related). There are rules for shooting arrows to higher or lower ground.
>The tiles barely affect the gameplay.
Simply wrong(pic related). Nearly all maps have relevant terrain rules. Just because you personally ignored or forgot any tactical possibilities presented by the terrain doesn't mean they're not there.
>You're repeating yourself already.
Content design is not the same as mechanics. The game has a good combat engine, and the content designed for that engine is also good. Many games fail on one or the other, although failing too hard on engine and mechanics will always lead to bad content.
>It's just a standard job system and it's not even close to be as expansive as other games.
Expansiveness is just one reason it is good. The specific design of "major class with sub abilities" offers a great balance between restriction and flexibility.
>Also, there are too many game breaking classes/ability combos that are braindead simple to figure out.
This is a nitpick. There aren't really that many. Calculator, Orlandu, that's about it. Maybe Bard and Dancer but exploiting them requires a very specific and tedious strategy.
>You move your character. You pick the attack that will hit and do the most damage.
We have already established your crippling inability to draw distinctions between relevant concepts. This description of the game is quite literally retarded and simply ignores everything the game does to provide meaningful consequences for tactical choices, which is the fundamental point of the game. Hell, even your simplistic description is proven wrong by the early random battles that reward staying in place while the enemy advances to you.

All Star Pro Wrestling III

Yeah, it's a Square Enix game, but the original developer of ASPW I (a PS2 launch title) was Squaresoft or Square No. 5 Development Division, the same team that developed Einhänder. ASPW3 even used a remix of an Einhänder tune as an entrance theme.

I haven't, but I should note that D&D settings are a bit different since they're intended to be very large to support tabletop campaigns. JRPG settings tend to be smaller and custom-fit to the narrative of the game.

What Xenogears does so well is explain and derive all the main characters, factions, institutions, and technology of its world and main narrative from a single genesis event on the planet 10,000 years ago. Many if not most JRPGs attempt something like this to some degree. Xenogears is just the only one that ever really blew me away with how thorough it was. But yes it is still a JRPG-scale world, not a D&D scale campaign setting.
