Never played it...should I? What sets it apart from other RPGs?

>> No.4662527

>>4662497
Not much. it's got a lot of charm and it does what it does well. It just doesn't do anything overly unique.

>> No.4662528

It's a very short game with 90's era voice acting, and is pretty standard as far as RPGs go. It's not outstanding, but it won't eat up much of your time, either.

Lots of charm, lovable characters, and great story. Gameplay-wise its a basic JRPG

I think it was the first one with voice acting audio and 2d animated video. It was great when it came out. I don't see why it wouldn't be now.

That's an example of what you can expect from the game. Forced homosexual innuendos everywhere, even in "dramatic" cutscenes.

Eternal Blue is slightly better. I mean, the trash references are still there but somebody at Working Designs told them to be a bit more subtle about it.

Check out DUAL ORB 2. It's the better game.

One thing I'll tell you is that it has hard boss fights, which is a stark change of pace from most RPGs I think. Some of those bosses, including the last one, are goddamn vicious bastards. I really liked that aspect of Lunar EB, I felt like I had to work a little for those victories, whereas most of the time especially late in the game bosses stand no chance.

The beginning of the game is pretty punishing overall, but I would suggest you stick with it. Like others have said it's got a lot of charm. Not as much as SSSC I think, but it's certainly engrossing in its own right.

This is why we can't have silly fun anymore.

It's very generic, but there's something about the characters that makes you really care for them.
Just be sure to play Eternal Blue right after.

Don't know the differences in the Saturn version but I played the Sega CD version and got really stocked when it came out on PS1. I can't remember but I think I remember they removed teleportation pools that came up a bit after halfway into the game but I will always hate that they changed skills and spells into an 8 slot only system if only because it causes a weird dissonance in the story that one of the main reasons you go to Vane is to unlock Alex's magic potential and I remember they kept that narrative hook in the remake
it also takes away Alex's ability to be a jack of all trades character who can fight, heal and use offensive fire magic

>> No.4663421

it's not a game that brings anything new to the table, but it does everything well. just a solid classic jrpg with great pacing that'll keep you hooked until you finish it.

the game is rather easy. some of the bosses are a fun challenge as they level up with you. still not hard for jrpg vets...but fun nonetheless. the game emulates 100% on psxfin and epsxe. no reason not to play it.

>> No.4663432

>>4663320
for sega cd and ps1...the tele pools are in both. there are minor story changes that don't affect the overall arc of the story. one of them has to do with vane but I can't remember exactly. it's been a while. I never played the Saturn version either.

I'm pretty sure alex is a jack of all trades in all versions with the dragon powers. they basically give him the best healing, buff and attack spells iirc.

>>4663207
I guess if you put no effort into your runes or whatever they were called setup you could have some trouble, but EBC wasn't difficult at all, either.

>> No.4663460

>>4663436
idk. I think ebc like sssc had bosses that leveled up with alex. there are harder boss fights in rpgs but the lunar games on ps1 were no slouches either...despite the main dungeon fodder being relatively easy.

also to get to the special bath house in sssc (where they're slightly nude I think???) the forest dungeon there was hard as shit and you will get your ass kicked.

>> No.4663497

>>4662497
One cool thing is the NPCs usually have interesting things to say. Also, their dialogue changes over the course of the game when you revisit old towns.

>> No.4663501

I love how the male bath house is just sitting in the open, while the female one is hidden in the tough dungeon.

>> No.4663512

>>4663501
yeah you really had to earn that bath cut scene. and by earn I mean if you're horny enough. to make it you really do have to try to avoid whatever fights you can...and hopefully only have to deal with very few. it really is brutal.

Or you could just hold on to your hormones for a little longer and breeze through the place with Black Dragon Void(the armor spell).

>>4663320
As >>4663432 said, Alex was a JOAT in the last stretch anyway in the PSX version. In the end, nothing of value was lost.

I am still not certain which final boss fight was better, though...SCD or PSX?

>> No.4663751

It presents a colorful, fun world with a cast of characters that actually feel believable in its setting. Not everyone gets along and there's often arguments and even betrayals. Shit's way more interesting than most JRPGs today where everyone gets along most of the time.

>> No.4664713

I traded lunar 1 and 2 for the ps1 for a copy of grant theft auto 3, I'll never stop being mad at myself

>> No.4665138

>>4663460
By like halfway through the game you have more gold than you could ever spend. Keep a full stock of MP restoring items, set up your crests so Lemina goes first and you can wipe 99% of the trash in the game in a single cast of her AoE damage spells. As far as bosses go, just like in SSSC, the white dragon power makes boss fights trivial.

>> No.4665207

They're fun games with writing that gives you a sense of adventure. After a while gamearts tried to emulate the grim pseudo intellectual style of Squaresoft games and they just couldn't do it anywhere near as good.

I doubt there's gonna be a thread about regretful trades anytime soon so let me top that and say I traded Secret of Mana, full in box with manual for Monster Rancher 1 in a generic jewel case. Man was I fucking stupid

>> No.4665663

Back in the day, I bought and still have the special edition with the cloth map and hard bound book.

I'd say it's pretty standard RPG fare but it's very charming. It had cool animesque cut scenes, good soundtrack and was good at getting you attached to the characters. This was at a time anime wasn't as widely available in the U.S. so it was kind of unique in it's art style.

I honestly don't like RPG anymore since they take so much time, but I still find this game charming.

>> No.4666089

>>4662497
It's one of the earliest "anime JRPGs" and it shows, with all its tropes that you would call stale by today's standards. I never got the hype, the first Grandia game does everything Lunar does but better imo. Play the PSP port.

>> No.4666213

The Lunar series is a lot of fun, but it can be pretty tedious at times.

It's a good old school RPG if you're wanting that experience.
